VII.C. Grants
VII.C.1. TIP Grant Application: NCHS, "Murals"
Rationale

Nelson County High School is requesting a Teacher Initiated Program (TIP) grant from the Kentucky Arts Council in the amount of $2,160. The grant requires matching funds in the amount of $1,140. NCHS is requesting an additional $500 for material costs for a total request of $1,640 from the Board of Education. This grant will fund a 20-day residency at NCHS of mural artist Jesse Ray Sims. Sims will collaborate with teachers, faculty and students to plan, create and install a mural of key subject areas and extracurricular activities at NCHS. The mural, which will be installed in a public area at NCHS, will demonstrate the importance and pride in a Nelson County education while displaying a basis for the importance of art education in the curriculum. Sims will collaborate with art teachers Dianna Williams and Anne Zabenco, along with a core group of 120 students in four classes to create the mural. It is expected that all students, along with parents and the community, will contribute to the project. In addition to depicting core content and extracurricular subjects, the mural will draw inspiration from a study of Mexican and American mural artists to explore how culture and diversity influence the production of murals. If approved, the residency will start February 2, 2009 and will conclude on March 3.

VII.C.2. TIP Grant Application: New Haven, "Dance"
Rationale

New Haven School is requesting a Teacher Initiated Program (TIP) grant from the Kentucky Arts Council in the amount of $1,080. The grant requires matching funds in the amount of $570. This grant will fund a 10-day residency at New Haven of dance artist Deborah Denenfield. The artist will lead students through a study of the cultures connected with the types of dance described in the Kentucky Program of Studies. Students will continue with a more in-depth study of play party games and other entertainments in which children would have engaged during the time period related to Appalachian dance. A core group of one class of 8th grade students, two classes of fifth grade classes will meet with dance artist each day for the 10-day residency. A non-core group composed of students who will participate in the Berea Mountain Folk Festival will meet with the dance artist for eight sessions during the residency.

Students will participate in their choice of the following projects related to the residency: 1. Develop a display related to one of the cultures featured in the four types of dances they have learned, or 2.  Develop instructional materials to help teach other students (and their families) some of the play party games they have learned during this residency. These instructional materials may include production of an instructional DVD and development of a “how to” brochure with step-by-step directions. Students will perform a variety of dances they have learned during a PTO meeting, Family Literacy Night, or similar gathering. As the production allows, students will incorporate dances and/or play party games they have learned in a production of “Lincoln: A Man For All Times”, funded in part by a Kentucky Arts Council Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Project grant.

If approved, the residency will start February 22, 2009 and conclude March 5.

VII.C.3. TIP Grant Application: Bloomfield Elementary, "African Dance"
Rationale

Bloomfield Elementary School is requesting a Teacher Initiated Program (TIP) grant from the Kentucky Arts Council in the amount of $540. The grant requires matching funds in the amount of $285. This grant will fund a 5-day residency at Bloomfield of performance arts specialist Yolantha Harrison-Pace. Through this grant, fourth and fifth grade classes will participate in a week of West African Rhythm Movement and Sound workshops. On the final day of the residency, all students from kindergarten through fifth grade will participate in a cultural fair in which Harrison-Pace will teach them about West African Culture as she instructs them in mini-lessons on music & dance. Students and teachers will be creatively engaged in learning traditional movements and choreographing original dances based on the movements. They will play polyrhythms & create rhythm patterns. After learning the role of costumes in West African dance, students will wrap fabric to create their own costumes. Unlike simply reading about other cultures and watching dance videos, this project gives students the opportunity to stand up, move their bodies and create rhythm. This provides an authentic, culturally enriching and memorable experience for teachers, students and parents.

If approved, the five-day residency will start February 13.

Second, by collaborating with the artist, classroom teachers’ ability to integrate elements of music and dance into instruction will be enhanced. And finally, Boston students will share what they learned through a school-wide celebration of diversity in which the students will perform for other students, parents, and community members.  If approved, the five-day residency will start February 23.

VII.C.5. TIP Grant Application: Boston, "Paper Engineering"
Rationale

Boston School is requesting a Teacher Initiated Program (TIP) grant from the Kentucky Arts Council in the amount of $540. The grant requires matching funds in the amount of $285. This grant will fund a 5-day residency at Boston of visual artist and “paper engineer” Jane McTeigue. The artist will collaborate with a Boston team including teachers Joanne Maldini, Dana Cull, Nancy Smith and Victoria Terstegge, along with principal Kim Whitley. The team hopes to accomplish three main goals at its completion.  1) A core group of 76 students will work with paper engineer, Jane McTeigue, to create pop-up books. Fourth grade students will integrate science and art to design a book about weather. Fifth grade students will create books about the colonial period leading up to the Revolutionary War. Both topics will integrate essential art vocabulary with the respective core content. 2) Through collaboration with the artist, classroom teachers will gain and model strategies for incorporating bookmaking and three dimensional pop-up art in their classrooms. They will learn first hand the value of integrating art into other curricular areas such as science and social studies. 3) Boston students will share their involvement with the artist through a buddy-reading project where students will pair younger students to read and discuss their books. In addition, they will share the project through a presentation at a school PTA and Nelson County Board of Education meeting. If approved, the five-day residency will start April 13.

VII.C.6. TIP Grant Application: Cox's Creek, "Historical Dance"
Rationale

Cox’s Creek Elementary School is requesting a Teacher Initiated Program (TIP) grant from the Kentucky Arts Council in the amount of $1,080. The grant requires matching funds in the amount of $570. This grant will fund a 10-day residency at CCE of dance artist Deborah Denenfield. The artist will lead students through a study of the dances as a complement to a study of "Arts in the Era of Lincoln." Denenfeld will lead students through a more in-depth study of dance during the 1800's.  Students will learn about the origins of Colonial and Appalachian dance and connections between these European origins and cultural aspects of the 19th century. Four fifth grade classes will be the core groups, meeting daily during the ten days of the residency. During the residency, teachers will include a review of each of the cultures in Social Studies instruction to help students understand connections between the cultures and the ways that the cultures expressed themselves through dance. This dance residency will help students gain a deeper understanding of the connection between time periods in history and the way that cultural groups of those time periods expressed themselves through the Arts. This residency is intended to complement students’ work with a project funded, in part, by a Kentucky Arts Council Lincoln Bicentennial Project grant. Public performance events will combine elements from the dance residency with student projects developed through the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Project grant. If approved, the residency will start January 28, 2009 and conclude February 13.

Students will learn about the origins and history of Blues, Gospel, Appalachian Folk Music, and Country. The residency will start with the artist delivering four instructional sessions during a school-wide Cultural Fair. McGee will then build on that experience through daily sessions with four core groups during the next four days. He will engage students by teaching them songs that had their beginnings in the 17th century through contributions of immigrants from Ireland and Germany and those brought here during the time of the slave trade with Africa. If approved, the five-day residency will start February 20.
