Rationale

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                                          PEYTON DOZER

The EHS Student of the Month for December is Peyton Dozer.  Peyton is an outstanding student and a shining example of the values that we recognize at Elizabethtown High School.  At EHS Emily is a member of the BETA club and also a Peer Tutor for Mrs. Herringshaw’s Algebra 2 class.

Mrs. Herringshaw states that “Peyton is a very hard worker.  She is a member of my AP stats class and also my peer tutor for algebra 2.  She is very helpful to others in the classroom.  Peyton performs well on class work and makes excellent grades.”

Outside of school, Peyton spends much of her time volunteering with the OPALS Dream Foundations Program, which is a “Make-A-Wish” Foundation for the Elderly.  As part of this program, she has volunteered many times at Allegro, doing anything from coordinate karaoke to to helping with and judging an art contest.

Mrs. Dodson shared: “Peyton is a pleasure to have in Creative Communications class.  In addition to just being a very pleasant, cordial person, she also handles all assignments thoughtfully and precisely, asking questions when she is uncertain.  Unsurprisingly,  Peyton is earning a high A in Creative Communications and is surely to succeed in next semester’s dual credit communications.  In particular, I appreciate Peyton’s attentiveness and important insights during class discussions.  She is a leader for her peers.”

Peyton has been accepted for general admission to the University of Louisville where she plans to pursue a degree in elementary education.  To help towards this goal, Peyton was a student in the Child Services program where she went daily to Panther Academy for 1 ho u r to work with students there.  She has also worked for Panther Place in the afternoons.

Congratulations Peyton for being selected as the December Student of the Month and thank you for all of your contributions as an Etown Panther.  Etown High School is truly honored to have you represent us.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                                                RYAN PYLES

Ryan Pyles is both an athlete and a scholar.  When asked to give some insight into Ryan, a couple of his classmates shared that Ryan “is a great leader and everyone looks up to him.  He has a lot of friends because he is the first to offer help when it is needed, he never has a bad thing to say about anyone, and he has a great sense of humor.”  Ryan is a member of the TKS football team and has played football since he was about 7.  He also plays on our basketball team and is a beta club member.  He says there is not a sport that he doesn’t like and he has “always been  a Panther.”  Ms. Hindle says that “Ryan is a prime example of Panther Pride.  He is a quiet, yet strong role model for his peers.  His teammates and classmates look to him as a model for their classroom behavior.  He exemplifies leading by example academically, in the classroom, in the hallways, and on the playing field or court.”

Ms. Perry also recognizes that Ryan is an excellent student and says “He puts forth the effort of doing his best on a daily basis.  He doesn’t try to do just enough to get by.  I love his work ethic.  He deserves this honor.”  Ms. Steffy agrees and characterizes Ryan as “the kind of student a teacher loves to have in class.  He’s smart and takes his academic pursuits seriously but he also has a sense of humor.  He is also an outstanding athlete who was a valuable member of this year’s TKS State Championship Football team.  Ryan is a very special young man and I am honored to have him in my class.”

Ryan’s coach, Mr. Petersen said the “what sets him apart in his natural ability to lead by example and to have others follow him” and Mr. Thorn claims that “Ryan not only demonstrates a positive attitude towards his academics and athletics, but promotes this positive atmosphere among his peers.  Ryan accepts his responsibilities as a student-athlete.  He continues to show that he can maintain excellent academic performance while managing his time on and off the athletic fields/courts.  Ryan is truly a well-rounded young man and has a bright future ahead of him.”

Ryan Pyles exhibits character in everything he does, and for all of the reasons mentioned, we are honored to recognize Ryan Pyles as our TK Stone December Student of the Month.

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL    ALYSSA LEVEE

Alyssa is a third grader in Mrs. Clemons’ class who works hard on all her school work.  She loves playing basketball on her church league and is an avid fan of the UK Wildcats basketball team.  She enjoys watching and cheering on the team with her family!

Alyssa enjoys reading and loves to go to the local animal shelter in the summer and read to the dogs housed there.  Her favorite book series is “Princess Pink and the Land of Fake Believe”.

She loves animals and is CRAZY about Star Wars!  At Halloween she dressed as Ray and her little brother dressed as a Storm Trooper.  Needless to say, they love to pretend they are in Star Ward battles.  Currently her favorite thing is her Elf, Hangie and Hang-I- nator.

Alyssa is a musician who loves to sing and play the violin.  She is very creative and enjoys making up stories as well.  She also has a future ambition to train and compete an American Ninja Warrior!  Go Alyssa!  As you can see, Alyssa has many interests and is a very creative, well rounded student!

Congratulations to Alyssa!  You make Helmwood Heights proud!!!

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY DOES NOT HAVE A STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR DECEMBER

PANTHER ACADEMY                                                              JEREMIH KINGSTON RATCLIFFE

I cannot tell you how impressed I am with Jeremih.  The first few day s of school, Jeremih cried and begged me to just call his mom to come pick him up.  He told me one day that he would just go home and clean all day for his mom if I would call her.  After a few days and he adjusted to the routine of school, Jeremiah would come in with a big smile and hug to match it.

In the classroom, Jeremih is one of those students you look to as an example for the others.  No matter what’s going on in the room, he is attentive to what he is supposed to be doing.  He is a super listener.  His great listening and desire to learn has advanced him from a student with few skills in August to a great reader in the class now.

Jeremih is so helpful and mannerly.  He apologizes without being prompted.  He will help others that are having a hard time making the right choices at times, too.

PANTHER PLACE                                                     KAYLA PEELER

Kayla is a 1st grader enrolled in Ms. Payne’s class at Morningside Elementary.  Ms. Abby Johnson nominated Kayla because she is a model student in her Panther Place class.  Ms. Abby wrote, “Kayla comes in everyday with a positive attitude.  She helps friends when they struggle with something and woks hard on her own homework and other Panther Place activities.  Kayla always listens and follows directions.”  She was really shy when she first started attending Panther Place but, she has become a great friend to all her classmates.

Kayla told me that sh3e loves to read and she likes to do math activities at Panther Place.  When not at school, Kayla likes going to gymnastics and playing outside.

I talked to a couple of her classmates and they had this to say:  “Kayla is very smart and she is so cute!”  Her sister, who is also enrolled at Panther Place, has this to say about her sister:  “Kayla is sweet and intelligent.  She is a little shy and she is the nicest kid I know.”

We enjoy having Kayla at Panther Place and look forward to seeing her grow as a student in our program.  We are proud to name Kayla Peeler as Panther Place’s December student of the month.

IV.E. Approve Authorization to Submit the WHAS Crusade for Children Grant
Rationale

We have applied for the WHAS Crusade Grant for the past several years.  This grant has provided funding for school busses as well as services for students with special needs.

Mrs. Kristin Froedge, Director of Special Programs has prepared the grant request and is requesting $38,200.00 to assist students.  Our child count this year was 29 students over where we were last year.  We continue to grow in the number of special education students served in the district each year (this year 338).  We also have an increase in our low incidence population which often times have higher level of needs to help them access the curriculum and meet their individual needs.  The funds requested this year will supplement current service providers with the resources needed to provide high quality education and related services.  The grant is also requesting funds to support a part-time special education Community Based Work Transition Program (CBWTP) for the district.
