V. RECOGNITION OF GUESTS AND OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
V.A. Students of the Month
Rationale

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                          KRISTINA GONZALEZ-LOPEZ
Kristina has been a very active student at EHS.  She has been a member of the Volleyball team since her freshman year and was a senior Captain.  She is a member of Student Council, Beta Club, Spanish Club, Y Club, Pep Club, SADD Club and the Friends of Rachel – Vice President.  She is also actively involved in the Saint James Catholic Church Youth Group.  Kristina is a very dedicated and focused student and intends to pursue a major in Biology and later attend Medical School.  She is loyal, honest, and respectful and an excellent role model for her peers.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                                 RIKA ONISHI
Rika is an excellent addition to our student body in all ways.  Although she has a tendency to “hide and watch” at times, she almost always has a correct answer to give.  When she doesn’t understand due to language or concept, she asks for clarification.  Her ready smile is inviting and gains her invitation to classroom groups and groups of friends.  Her striving for success transfers to the basketball court as well.  TKS is fortunate that Rika’s family chose our district in which to live.

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY                     FIZA HAIDER
Compassionate, respectful, responsible….these are just a few of the adjectives we could use to describe Fiza Haider.  We are so excited to write to inform you about why Fiza is Helmwood’s student of the month!  She is an excellent example of good character each day in our classroom.  She is a role model for others both academically and socially.  Read on to find out why!

First of all, Fiza shows compassion for others each day in class.  If she finishes her work early, she is always willing to help another student who has questions.  She also motivates others by giving them compliments and encouraging them to do their best!  Can you see why we think Fiza is a great role model for compassion?

Second, Fiza always shows respect for others in the building.  Whether it’s a teacher or a student, Fiza is respectful.  She uses polite words and always speaks to others.  She has excellent manners and uses them when she talks to students and teachers.  She never talks back to others. She waits her turn and never complains.  Fiza is a shining example of respect!

Third, Fiza exemplifies responsibility every day at school.  She has to switch classes every day for Reading, Math, and Social studies.  She always comes to each class prepared with the materials she needs.  She also always has her homework and class projects ready to turn in on time.  Can you see why we think Fiza is a good role model for responsibility?

As you can see, Fiza definitely deserves the role of Student of the Month for Helmwood Heights!  If you see Fiza in the hallway, be sure and tell her congratulations.  We are so proud of her!

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL                    MAKAYLA HUGHES
I would like to nominate Makayla Hughes as Morningside Elementary School’s 2nd Grade Student of the Month.  Makayla is a wonderful, kind, and caring student!  She arrives to school prepared and is an active participant in class.  She is always engaged in lessons and eager to learn.  She is a very hard worker and takes great pride in her school work by always giving 110%.  Makayla is respected by her peers and they acknowledge that fact daily by emulating her positive behaviors in the classroom.  She is a dream student for any teacher and very deserving of this recognition!

PANTHER ACADEMY                                                   WYATT MULLENS
Wyatt Mullens is a very sweet, caring, intelligent little boy.  He is a joy to have in class and brightens our day with his adorable smile.  He is a very hard worker, pays attention in class and follows all the class and school rules.  He is a role model for his peers; in fact he was our “snowball king” in January.  He was crowned “snowball king” because he earned the most good behavior snowballs on our behavior graph.

Not only is he a good student but a good friend to others as well.  He is always one of the first to share his crayons, toys, and math manipulatives etc., anything to help someone else.

Wyatt not only brings a smile to our faces through his good behavior and superb academics but he is hilarious.  He has taught us many things about farms, power rangers and ninjas; however my favorite story occurred during our literacy time on the carpet.  We were getting ready to read a story together and the class was a little noisy.  He asked them to “please be quiet, he was trying to levitate”.  I said do you mean meditate?  He said, “no, I mean levitate, I have to find my inner peace and calmness so I can float off the ground, then I can meditate”.  We could not contain our laughter so we all imitated his posture and seating position and tried to levitate as well.  From then on when the class becomes noisy I tell them to relax, breath in deep and find their inner peace and calmness.

These are just a few memories I will have of Wyatt to bring a smile to my face and hope you can take a few with you as well.  He is a remarkable child and I know great things are in store for him in the future with all that he does.  He is a wonderful student to have for the student of the month.

PANTHER PLACE                                                     EMANEE SIMON

Emanee is in 3rd grade at Helmwood Elementary and is new to Panther Place this school year.  It did not take us long to realize what a wonderful and compassionate young lady she is.  She was nominated by  Mrs. Compton who tells us it is a pleasure to have Emanee in her class at Panther Place.  Emanee is always very respectful; she works hard to complete her homework then offers to help other students.  She is very giving and kind, putting others before herself. We never have to ask her twice to do something.  She sees others needing help or just needing a friend during activity or play and she is right there making friends and helping others to feel comfortable.

Emanee told us it is really hard to choose her favorite subject, but she thinks overall she loves math and science the most. Maybe art too.  She loves Panther Place, especially the club activities and homework, that way she doesn’t have to do it when she gets home.  Outside of school and Panther Place, Emanee loves cheerleading, playing baseball, softball and football with her brother, reading and attending church.

Justice Love is the student assistant working with Mrs. Compton, and Justice writes,” Emanee is an absolute amazing student.  I love having her in class.  She is creative, kind, helpful, respectful and goofy.  She is everything a young teenage assistant could ask for.  When I have a bad day I enjoy coming to work in the 3rd grade class with all the students, but most of all Emanee.  She always makes my day better, whether it is getting her homework done, cleaning or just sometimes asking me how my day was.  Thank you Emanee.”

For all these wonderful reasons and more, we are pleased to name Emanee Simon our May Student of the Month.

Attached is a memorandum from Ms. Cora Wood, Director of Personnel, requesting approval of a contract with Automated Substitute Placement and Absence Management Program (AESOP)
Currently our school secretaries and principals are responsible for arranging for substitute teachers in the absence of a teacher.  For the most part it is the school secretaries who receive phone calls from staff on evenings, early mornings, holidays and weekends spending many of their own personal time securing substitute teachers.
AESOP is an automated program that would allow employees to log onto a software program and request a substitute teacher.  This would take the burden away from the school secretaries and principals.
If this program is approved, it would go into effect in the fall of 2013.
The cost of this program is
$4,000    set up fee
  1,500    travel and training expenses

VIII.F. Consideration of Approval to Create a Special Education Teaching Position to Serve and Assist Students Enrolled in the Alternative Settings
Rationale

Consideration of Approval/Acceptance to create a Special Education position to serve and assist the students enrolled in our Alternative Settings - Glen Dale, Alternative School and Children's Therapeutic Rehabilition Program (CTRP/Communicare).  Attached is a Memorandum from Mrs. Kristin Froedge requesting an additional Special Education Teacher

The students and teachers at these alternative settings are in need of additional support and assistance.  Mrs. Froedge is committed to add this position back into her (IDEA) budget in the near future and is confident that once our Coordinated Early Intervening Services (CEIS) allocations are freed up we will have the necessary funding to absorb this cost.

  • Glen Dale - currently has nine (9) students with disabilities and we are only serving these students for 1.5 hours/day.  Adding another staff member  would free up the current high school teacher to provide the necessary transitional services for EHS students, which is needed since we have eliminated our Community Based Work Transition Program teacher and assistant.
  • EAC - Mrs. Kristin Froedge, Director of Special Programs, is currently serving any special education student who is referred to Valley View, which diverts her from administrative responsibilities.
  • CTRP currently has ten (10) children enrolled in their program and these children have severe behavioral/mental health needs.  If approved, this teacher would be available to provide any necessary support for the assigned teacher/assistant which would also free up Mrs. Froedge.
