The January 16, 2018 EIS Regular Board Meeting is Called to Order

"I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION UNDER GOD INDIVISIBLE WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL"

Per Board Policy 01.41 Organizational Meetings, the first meeting of the board of education in January is designated as the time for which the Board elects a Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson.

The newly elected Chairperson along with the Superintendent, Jon Ballard will preside over the remainder of the meeting.

Pursuant to EIS Board Policy 01.45 Board Meeting Agenda, as part of the official agenda for each regular board meeting, the Superintendent shall prepare a consent agenda of routine business items.  Prior to the approval of the agenda the members of the board may request to "pull" any item from the consent agenda and place the item on the action agenda for further discussion and review.

January is School Board Member Appreciation Month.

Ms. Edna Berger, Mayor of the City of Elizabethtown has proclaimed the month of January 2018 throughout this community as School Board Recognition Month.  (see attached)

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL      DONOVAN HUSKEY

The EHS student of the month for January is Donovan Huskey.  Donovan is both a running back on the Panther Football team, earning honors such player of the game and the hall of fame award, as well as a runner for the Panther Track team, competing in the 4 x 400 relay and the open 200.   Over the past 4 years, Donovan has helped the Panther Football team earn 3 consecutive region titles and 3 semi-state appearances.  On the Panther Track team, in his sophomore year, Donovan’s relay team for the 4 x 400 ranked in the top 10 at the state track meet.

Along with his success on the field and track, Donovan is a member of the pep club and enjoys spending time with his friends.  He manages to find time to also work at Kohl’s.  Donovan’s future plans include playing college football but is currently undecided on where he will attend.  He plans on majoring in business and getting a minor in social work.

Coach Brown had these comments:  “Donovan is an exemplary student and athlete. He is hard working and always on time. Donovan has goals and dreams and works tirelessly to pursue them.”

Mrs. Major, for whom Donovan is a teacher’s aide, stated that:  “Donovan is a great help. He always checks my mail, makes copies and helps out anyway he can.”

Donovan is earning dual credit in both English and Communications this year.   Mrs. Thompson, his dual credit English teacher stated: “Donovan is a young man of personal and academic integrity. He especially stands out to me because of his natural interest in learning and taking on challenging tasks. In our dual credit English class, students write on topics of interest to them. It has been wonderful for me to see Donovan respectfully take on subject matter that is both controversial and significant. We need young thinkers and strong voices like Donovan both in our hallways and in our society.”

Finally, Donovan’s communications teacher, Mrs. Dodson added:  “I appreciate that Donovan challenges himself by volunteering for tasks in Communication that most of his peers would shy away from.  Donovan has a wonderful sense of humor and knows how to engage others.”

Congratulations Donovan for being selected as the January Student of the month and thank you for all of your contributions as an Etown Panther.  Etown High School is truly honored to have you represent us.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL   JOHN MICHAEL HAYES

John Michael is an 8th grader at TKS.  He is a straight "A" student and his favorite subject is Algebra One Honors with Mr. Lutz.  John Michael has been competitively swimming since he was 5 years old.   He currently swims freestyle for Cardinal Aquatics in Louisville.  This club competes in many states including:  Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, and North Carolina so he travels quite a bit. 

During his spare time, which is little, John Michael concentrates on his homework and plays a little bit of Xbox with his buddy, Luke Presta.  John Michael is also an artist; he enjoys putting his expression into art instead of words.  He has painted several ceiling tiles at TKS, mostly images of the galaxies  He is currently working with Mr. Druin to build a 3D Tital creature - this is an ongoing project.

The following teachers have this to say:

Mr. Grossman - John is always smiling and has a positive attitude.  He never lets his grueling swim schedule affect his school work or his positive attitude.

Mr. Lutz - John is a very good math student who works extremely hard in Alegbra 1.  John is very independent and goes above and beyond all expectations.  He has strong leadership skills and is a great representative of TK Stone.

Mr. Pearman - John Michael Hayes is on of the most respectful students I have this year.  This respect is consistently shown toward his peers and adults.  His work ethic in and out of the classroom comes in at a close second.  If John Michael continues to mature at the rate he is progressing, he'll prove to be a productive citizen that will help propel our country into the future.

Based on his swimming career, John Michael plans to attend the University of Louisville, University of Texas, Michigan or University of Florida to major in physical therapy or architecture.  He has a bright future ahead of him.  It is a pleasure to recognize John Michael Hayes as our January 2018 TK Stone student of the month.

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY     Dakirah Washington

Our January Student of the Month is Dakirah Washington!  Dakirah is a first grader in Mrs. Duff's classroom, and is being recognized for her hard work and wonderful citizenship in our school!  She exemplifies our Guidelines for Success each day.

Dakirah's class agrees that she is a very hard worker!  She puts forth her very best effort on each assignment, staying focused on her work and having the tenacity to keep trying even when the work is hard.  She takes responsibility for her learning, and always tries to be her best!

Dakirah's behavior each day is a wonderful example of good citizenship!  She is respectful to herself and others, and is always willing to lend a helping hand or a kind smile.  she is always cooperative and sharing, and she is a great learning partner in the classroom!

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY             LOFTON SANFORD

It is Morningside Elementary School’s honor to recognize Lofton Sanford as Student of the Month for January 2018.  Lofton is in Mrs. Hinkle’s 2^nd grade class and an absolute joy to have at Morningside.

Lofton exemplifies the Morningside’s core values and beliefs.  Each day he brings forth a positive attitude and a true curiosity for learning new things.  He is without a doubt respectful to teachers, other adults, and peers.  His quiet disposition lends itself to a kind heart and a humble personality.

Lofton is very helpful to his peers and is always the first person to face a challenge with an open mind and heart.  He is truly admired by his classmates for his hard work and determination to be his very best.

Lofton is known in Mrs. Hinkle’s classroom as the “Mathematician” because of his obvious love for the subject and his drive to be a mathematical thinker.

We are definitely honored to call Lofton a Morningside Panther.  It is with great pleasure to present Lofton Sanford with the Elizabethtown Independent School’s January 2018 Student of the Month award.  He deserves it!

PANTHER ACADEMY               BOSTON McMURTREY

Boston McCurtrey is one of the most kindhearted caring students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching.  On multiple occasions I have witnessed Boston giving other students compliments on their work.  He tells them how cool their drawings are or how that is the “best number eight he has ever seen”.  Not many five and six year olds give peers praise unless prompted to do so, therefore this quality he possesses is just one of the many reasons he is deserving of the Student of the Month.

Not only is he compassionate but he is very hardworking as well.  He enjoys math and literacy centers and is becoming a very good writer and reader.  Boston is extremely creative and artistic.  His illustrations always include wonderful details; and can tell a story all on their own.  He participates in whole group discussions and is always ready with an answer or an opinion on varied subjects.

Not only is Boston a diligent student he is also a very considerate person.  I have seen him on many occasions check on others if they seem upset and he also is one of the first to share toys or supplies.  Once he finishes his work he often offers to help other students or even his teachers.  His kindness and compassion are not only displayed in the classroom but other school areas as well.  Boston is a friend to all his peers.  He plays with different kids every day and is always social and cooperative during free center time and recess.

At such a young age Boston already has so many wonderful qualities that I cannot wait to see the man he becomes, I know that his future is definitely a bright one.  Boston is an absolute pleasure to have as a student and I feel so grateful and blessed to be able to have him in class this year.  He shows us all daily what a true caring and considerate person should look like.

PANTHER PLACE         KAYSHIA HULL

Panther Place’s January student of the month is Kayshia Hull.  She comes to Panther Place from Helmwood Heights Elementary where she is in Mrs. Metcalf’s second grade class.  This is her first year to be enrolled in the program.  Her Panther Place teacher, Ms. Kaci Kays nominated Kayshia stating that “Kayshia is an amazing second grader.”  She loves to help other students and Ms. Kaci everyday.  She always follows the rules and is respectful to her classmates and the staff.  Kayshia said that her favorite subject in school is reading.  When she is not in school or Panther Place she loves playing with her family and friends.  Kayshia said that she loves to “do” her friends’ hair and talk.  Ms. Kaci said that Kayshia is a great role model for all the other students.  We are very proud to name Kayshia Panther Place’s student of the month for January, 2018.

Congratulations to Qhovia Phillips, an 8th grader at TK Stone Middle School, who was selected as the 1st place recipient of the 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest.

This was a statewide contest in which students wrote about a speech or moment in Dr. King’s life that inspired them the most.

Congratulations to the EHS Football team for another region championship  and for reaching the semi-finals of the 3-A football playoffs.

The National Certification Program was established to provide an outlet for teachers like professionals in other fields, to achieve distinction by demonstrating through a demanding performance assessment that they meet high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to apply.  Katie Davis and Derisa Hindle now meet the standards for National Board Certification set by the board of directors of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Attached is information from the School Facilities Construction Commission (SFCC) regarding their official Offer of Assistance.  Acceptance of this Offer of Assistance commits the school district to adhere to the statutes and regulations governing this program.  This Offer of Assistance is in the annual debt service amount of $47,785 to be used towards proposed construction or major renovations of facilities outlined in your most current approved facility plan.

Hardship Graduation Requirements

Board Policy 08.1132 states:

"Students who experience extreme health or economic hardship may apply for assistance with graduation requirements for hardship reasons.

Attached is a letter and Hardship Graduation Application requesting approval for early graduation due to hardship. 

This student meets all of the requirements for early graduation.

Mrs. Kelli Bush, Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning will give an overview of the Comprehensive District Improvement Plan  (Attached)

• EIS Goal Builder 2018

Mrs. Kelli Bush, Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning, will discuss the the goals and objectives, focus strategies, best practices in curriculum and instruction, promoting an inclusive culture and improving teacher and leader effectiveness for approval of the District Improvement Plan.

• CDIP 2017-18

State law (KRS 160.470) requires that every local board of education receive a Draft Budget before January 31, 2018 for the upcoming school year.  The law's purpose is to assure that the board has sufficient information about projected receipts and expenditures for all funds in the entire budget as allocations for individual budget components are considered.

This information is to be taken under advisement and approve a motion that the Board has reviewed the projected revenue and expense for 2018-2019 pursuant to KRS 160.470.  Action on the school allocations should be taken at the regular board meeting in February 2018.
