IV. RECOGNITION OF GUESTS AND SPECIAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
IV.A. Students of the Month
Rationale

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                                                              AFEERA MALIK

The EHS student of the month for May is Afeera Malik.  Afeera has worked extremely hard over the past four years and is an excellent student as depicted on her transcript and resume.  Each year, Afeera has chosen a steady core of challenging courses and worked diligently.  As I look over her transcript for the past four years, I see that she has chosen courses that other students avoided.  By the time Afeera graduates, she will have completed five advanced placement courses, nine honors courses and two dual credit courses.  During her sophomore year, Afeera was recognized for having the highest grade in AP World History and for having perfect attendance.  In addition to her excellence in the classroom, Afeera has also been involved in a wide variety of extracurricular activities.  She has been a member of the Spanish club (currently vice president), Beta club, Earth club (currently vice president and served as treasurer last year), and the Art club.  Through membership in these school clubs, Afeera has had the opportunity to complete numerous volunteer hours.  In addition, Afeera has spent the past two summers volunteering at our local hospital and a local doctor’s office.

Here are some comments from her teachers:

Mrs. Pennington:  From the very 1st day of school, I could tell that Afeera Malik was going to be a student that was truly interested in the information included in my Business Management class.  It was refreshing to look out among my students and see her acknowledge the information being discussed and show interest by participating and asking questions. This has continued to be true throughout the year.  She is an excellent student who makes thoughtful contributions and is always prepared.  As I have gotten to know Afeera this year, I have found out that she is a determined and goal-setting person.  She is planning to major in the field of Accounting and become a Certified Public Accountant. She is intrigued by the flexibility in careers that this degree can offer.  She is doing all that she can in high school to gain knowledge and experience to prepare her for the next level. She is smart, inquisitive and naturally curious.  I have no doubt that she will be successful in the Accounting field or any field of study she chooses.

Ms. Dye:  Afeera is currently in Visual Art 3 class. Her artistic focus is in portrait drawing and she has become quite accomplished in this area over the past year.  Afeera has a sweet and cheerful personality and her classmates have affection and respect for her.  She has been an active member of the Art Club for the last three years.

Mrs. Herringshaw:  Afeera is very mature, responsible and a hard-worker.  She comes to school early most days to meet with her teachers for extra help – She goes above and beyond as a student.

EHS is proud to recognize Afeera Malik as the May Student of the Month

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                                                       MURTAZA SHOAIB

Murtaza Shoaib has been selected as the May TKS student of the month.  Murtaza competes for the TKS Academic team, Mth Counts, and the Beta Club.  Murtaza also plays tennis for EHS and he enjoys reading when he gets the time.  He hopes to be an orthopedic surgeon someday and certainly has the drive and dedication to be successful at whatever he chooses to do in life.

Murtaza is described by his friends as very smart and someone who thinks about things in a different way.  Bryan Herringshaw says “Murtaza is fun to talk with.  He is a great debater and we get into some very good discussions.”

Sue Steffy desbribes Murtaza as “a fine young man.  He’s intelligent, personable, and respectful.  However, what I most admire about him is the way he thinks.  Murtaza is a deep thinker and he gives every question   a great deal of consideration.  I know that he will b successful in whatever he chooses to do in life.  I feel honored to have had him in class.”

Ms. Jefferies relates that Murtaza has been a fantastic student to work with this semester.  “He is always deep in thought about a topic or issue we are discussing.  We do many presentations in my class, and he has always demonstrated great public speaking abilities.  Murtaza is also very kind and respectful.  He also works very hard to make sure he understands.  He is truly a joy to have in class.”

Joanna Breunig, our GT coordinator says Murtaza Shoaib is a well-spoken, intelligent young man who seems to be ahead of his years.  When he and his classmates are having a discussion, Murtaza often sums up an entire conversation in a few concise words, leaving the whole class with little to add.  Murtaza has a broad range of knowledge and a general understanding of the world around him because he is interested in more than just the “here and now”.  He is poised, polite, and hard-working, a great leader in our 8th grade class.

For all of these reasons, we are pleased to recognize Murtaza  Schoaib as our May TKS student of the month.

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY                                                     LIZ HANSON

Ms. Line wrote this about Liz.  It is my honor to nominate Liz Hanson as Morningside Elementary School’s May Student of the Month.  Liz is a fifth grade student in Mrs. Line’s homeroom class, but is well-loved and admired by al of her fifth grade teachers.  According to Ms. Rowland, Liz constantly strives to persevere and do her best in class.  She always wants to know how she can do better.  According to Mrs. Key, Liz is an excellent reader who shows hard work and determination daily.  In Mrs. Oldham’s classroom, Liz is always respectful, and eager to help her classmates in any way.  According to Mrs. Line, Liz is a leader in the classroom.  She is always following the Guidelines for Success and encourages her peers to do the same.  Liz has shown amazing growth as a writer this year because she listens and applies techniques learned in class to her writing.  Liz qualified to be accelerated for math classes and attends 6th grade math at T.K. Stone.  Her teacher, Mrs. Atcher, says that Liz is a hard worker and is always willing to try something new.  Liz is not afraid to make a mistake because she knows that making a mistake is a part of learning.

As you can tell, Liz stands out in the eyes of her teachers.  She has a positive attitude that is contagious to others.  She is always kind to her peers and always shows respect to her teachers and other adults in the building.  Liz has a kind heart, and eagerness to learn, and the persistence to always produce her best work.  The future is bright for Liz, and I am excited to see how much she will achieve in her time as a Panther.

PANTHER ACADEMY                                                      DRAYDEN GREENWELL

Drayden is a very kind hearted and compassionate student that I have been proud to have in my classroom.  He has so many mature and wonderful qualities for such a young age that one would only think a grownup would have.  These qualities are going to give him an advantage in growing into an even more respectful and successful young man that he already has demonstrated.

First, Drayden is very tolerant, perseverant, and resourceful.  He always has an optimistic outlook that everything will be ok and he always finds the positive aspect in it all.  If it is raining outside, Drayden is very easy going about having indoor recess.  He never complains about what we do in class.  Writing is a very hard task for this age but Drayden show perseverance during writing time.  He is always wiling to go back and keep trying until he figures out the right letter our sound or how to put sounds together to make a certain word.  He has a positive attitude about learning.

In class, he gives his absolute best in all of his work and even when he doesn’t understand a concept right at first as many students do not, he doesn’t give up and keeps trying until he succeeds.  Drayden has such a kind heart.  He is always extending a helping hand to help in small or big tasks.  After an ectivity, Drayden will help clean up the tables and floor without being asked.  He is very dependable as well.  Drayden always gets his homework and class work complete and if I need something done in the class, I can always count on him.  I am very proud of the accomplishments and progress that Drayden has made this year and I know that he will grow and strengthen these qualities that he holds.    Good  luck to you Drayden!

PANTHER PLACE                                                               NEVAEH NAPIER

Panther Place’s student of the month for May is Nevaeh Napier.  Nevaeh was very anxious to start attending Panther Place early in the year because her siblings were already enrolled.  From the very first week that we were able to enroll her, she proved to be a wonderful addition to our 5th grade class.  She came to us from Ms. Davis’ class at Helmwood Heights Elementary.  Our fifth grade teacher, Mr. Gaddis, said that Nevaeh has excellent behavior, always following classroom policies and staying on task.  She is always willing to help, no matter what the task is.  Nevaeh is very respectful to the staff and her classmates.  Nevaeh is very artistic and participates in the Panther Place art club.  Each week, she faithfully helps clean up after their art projects without being asked to help.  I asked Nevaeh to tell me a little more about herself.  She told me that she loves to read, but her favorite subject is math.  She likes all the Panther Place activities and especially likes to play dodgeball.   We are proud to name Nevaeh Panther Place student of the month for May.
