IV. RECOGNITION OF GUESTS AND SPECIAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
IV.A. Students of the Month
Rationale

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                               MATTHEW PUCKETT

The EHS Student of the Month for September is Matthew Puckett.  Matthew is a senior who represents EHS with the upmost integrity - a model student.  At EHS, Matthew has been a member of the BETS Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Student Council.  Matthew has been a member of the Boys Varsity Soccer Team all four years of high school where he was named to the all-district team last year.  In addition, Matthew served as the kicker for the football team last year.

Here are some comments from Matthew's teachers:

Mr. Yates:  "Matthew is a terrific student and player I've had the pleasure of teaching and coaching now for three years.  He has been a great example to his peers in the classroom and on the soccer field.  I have nothing but the utmost respect for Matthew as a student, player, but more importantly as a person because he has every characteristic to be a successful leader and uses them accordingly.  He is accountable, driven, hardworking, and professional in all he does.  I am very proud to call him my student and player!!"

Mrs. Montgomery:  "Matthew is very patient as a peer tutor in my collaborative Survey class with the students.  He always has a smile on his face and is very upbeat.  He has taken the initiative to help a student become more organized.  He noticed the student was just shoving his work into his backpack but the student couldn't find his assignments to turn in the next day.  Matthew helped him empty out his backpack and organized him with folders for each subject.  Matthew checks with his student daily and is reminding him how to stay organized until the student develops his organizational skills."

EHS is proud to recognize Matthew Puckett as the September Student of the Month.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                                     AIDAN ALDRIDGE

When asked to nominate an 8th grader to represent TK Stone as our student of the month, Aidan Aldridge was one of the first names that came to my mind.  I had Aidan in my language arts class during his 6th grade year.  He was always a student that could be counted on to do his best, no matter what the task was.  He consistently gave his best effort, and more importantly, set a great example for his peers.  I also love the fact that Aidan is his own person.  He stands up for what he believes is right, no matter what.

Aidan has been an active member of KYA while in middle school.  This year, I hear his goal is to run for the highest office at KYA, which is governor.  This doesn’t surprise me a bit!  Actually, I am pretty sure  I may be voting for Aidan some day as governor of Kentucky!

Aidan definitely exemplifies the qualities of hard work, a positive attitude, and respectfulness.  He is an outstanding representative of TK Stone Middle School.                            Written by Mrs. Larkin

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL               BROOKLYN CANN

We are honored and proud for Brooklyn Cann to represent Helmwood Heights as September Student of the Month!  Brooklyn is a leader in so many ways in our classroom and she always follows the Guidelines for Success.  Even her own classmates can describe why Brooklyn is so worthy of this award.

Keilyn Jones – “I think Brooklyn deserves Student of the Month because she is hardworking and she’s not pushy.”

Lexi Hall – “Brooklyn is nice to everyone in our class.”

Hannah Gray – “She follows our school’s Guidelines for Success by being cooperative with everyone in class.”

Evan Shelton – “Brooklyn is nice and loyal.”

Seth Moore – “Brooklyn is respectful to other people.  She gets her work done on time, and she never gets tallies for behaviors.”

Haven Renfow – “She helps other people and doesn’t ignore them.”

Mc Kenzie Young – “Brooklyn always follows the rules.  She doesn’t talk when our teacher is talking.  She raises her hand when she needs something, and she is always responsible with homework.”

Mrs. Davis – “On the first day of school, it was obvious that Brooklyn would be a leader in our classroom this year.  She is always on task and has a positive attitude.  She manages her time well, works well with others in a group, and is always prepared for class.  She makes a teacher’s job easy!”

Congratulations, Booklyn on your well-deserved award of Helmwood’s Student of the Month!  We are proud of you!

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY                                            CALEB IRWIN

Caleb Irwin is a positive role model in Mrs. Lewis’ second grade class.  He works hard, pays attention, follows the guidelines for success, and gives his best effort.  Caleb is an athlete throughout the year.  He plays football, baseball (on an All Start Team and Travel Team) and basketball.  Caleb wants to learn and enjoys studying for fun!  Mrs. Stroop, our librarian, he is a great reader and was reading chapter books as a first grader.

I asked some of Caleb’s friends what makes him a good representative of Morningside:

Gabe says he’s a good friend because he likes to make friends and he plays what they want to play.

Jagger, a teammate from the Dirt Bags, says Caleb is funny and smart.

Alexis and Riley tell me he likes pretending to be Farkle from Girl Meets Worls and that he’s always a friend to them.

Lex stated Caleb is very smart and a great speller.

Caleb is a great friend to others because he is willing to stand up for them like the time he stopped someone from making fun of Lincoln.

For all these reasons, Morningside is proud to have Caleb Irwin as our September Student of the Month.

PANTHER ACADEMY                                                            LANDYON CARLISLE

As soon as Landyon introduced himself the first day of kindercamp, I knew he was going to be a student whom teachers dream of.  He began by shaking my hand and replying to my questions with “yes m’am.”  In the few short weeks since school began, my assumption has been verified.  At an early age Landyon has already developed social skills we want everyone in our society to possess. He is very mannerly, courteous, compassionate, and, above all, kind.

An example of Landyon’s kindness occurred during seat work time.  I was helping a student across the room and overheard an incident between Landyon and another student who was sitting at his table.  The other student told Landyon that he had the crayons that were supposed to be his.  The other student was beginning to become upset and without skipping a beat Landyon said, “Ok, her you go;  no problem, buddy”  and handed over the crayons.  I am sure most of you do not visit a kindergarten classroom regularly, but most 5 and 6 year olds are not ready to hand over their supplies, especially without being prompted by an adult.  Landyon did not mind at all to share; he just wanted to make his new friend happy.

Landyon also displays his kindness and compassion during recess.  He is always one of the first to include another student in a game he is playing.  I have witnessed on many occasions Landyon asking a student who is alone to come and play.  This means more to the other student than he even realizes.

Landyon is a wonderful example and model to others and a very worthy recipient for the Student of the Month.  I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for such an extraordinary young man.  I feel very blessed to be able to be his teacher and work with him on a daily basis….  Mrs. Gregory

VALLEY VIEW EDUCATION CENTER                                  MICHAEL TILLITT

Valley View Education Center is proud to have Michael Tillitt for our September Student of the Month.  Michael is a 2nd grader who came to our district last January.  Since he has been with us, Michael has shown great improvements in all areas.  He is a very laid back, easy-going kid.  He likes legos, playing in the sand, and any sporting activity.  His teacher says, “Michael has a positive attitude and is a hard working in the classroom.  He is lovable and friendly to all.”  Another staff member shares that “Michael is always happy.  He absolutely LOVES school and wishes he could come on Saturdays and Sundays.”

Michael will soon be transitioning to Morningside Elementary School.  We will sure miss his smiling face, but excited about what lies ahead for Michael.

V.D. Approve Appointee to the 2015-2016 District Evaluation Appeals Committee
Rationale

The state regulations on evaluation of certified personnel, KRS 156.557 and 704 KAR 3:345 require the local board of education to appoint its representative to the Local Evaluation Appeals Panel.

As part of our district's evaluation process, an Evaluation Appeals Panel is established each school year.  This is an important element in the evaluation process; it ensures that our evaluation process and guidelines have been followed, and it provides a process to ascertain whether an employee has been fairly evaluated in his/her summative evaluation.

The Evaluation Appeals Panel is made up of three members - all certified staff members.  Two members of the three-member team are elected by the certified staff members in the district.  The third member is appointed by the Board of Education.

Ms. Cora Wood, Director of Personnel, has provided a memorandum (attached) pertaining to the appointment of certified evaluation appeals panel members (Tabitha Kerr, teacher at Valley View Education Center, Lori Larkin teacher at T.K. Stone Middle School and Jerry Crabtree teacher at EHS will serve as alternate). The EIS Board of Education is also required to appoint the third member of the panel and an alternate.  Mr. Jon Ballard, Superintendent would like to appoint Mrs. Kelli Bush to serve on the committee and Nate Huggins to serve as the alternate.

Rationale

Below is a letter from Michelle Motley, Principal at Helmwood Heights requesting $5800.00 to purchase equipment to help support PLTW.

To the Elizabethtown Board of Education:

As you are aware, Helmwood has been granted the Bemis Project Lead the Way grant.  In the grant we had to show that we could get funding from sources other than the grant itself to support the program.  We have allotted some of our Section 6 funding towards PLTW and have contacted an outside engineering company for support as well.  The EEF granted us funding to purchase iPads and a charging cart.

Helmwood is requesting funding from the board to aid in the purchase of equipment to help support PLTW.  We have purchased the modules for first through fourth grades, ten iPads that are required for student use, and paid for the training and registration.

Our request is for $5800, the same amount given to MES when they started their program.  We will purchase more iPads so that students in the same grade can be working on PLTW at the same time.  We also plan to purchase new modules as they are developed by PLTW.  The new bio-medical units are now available for purchase.  We still have VEX kits to purchase as well for our advancing 4th and 5th grade students.

Thank you for reviewing our request and for all the support you give our district.  We do believe in our mission statement; Each student, every day.

Respectfully submitted,

Michelle Motley, Principal
