Students of the Month
Elizabethtown High School Anne Elizabeth Mason
Anne Elizabeth is gifted in many ways. She is not only intelligent, but she is also concerned about making life better for others and will work with all types of people, always eager to learn. She thrives in an intellectual community that values learning and has been accepted to attend Davidson College.
She not only is well aware of the demands of Davidson, but she has been taught from an early age the value of education. Mature beyond her years, she is a role model for her peers and has not bent to the whims or fads of her generation, but is clearly her own person. She is determined, motivated, and driven and her attitude tends to rub off on the others around her in a positive manner. She pushes herself to do well in everything she pursues, and she excels with awards to prove it. With her personality and her work ethic, there is no stopping this young lady. English Department Lead Teacher, Tammy Twyman stated, “As a freshman when she was in my honors English class it became apparent quickly that this young lady was not a typical student; she is above average in many ways.”
The myriad of ways that Anne Elizabeth has extended herself through activities both during and after school is truly impressive. English teacher, Rhonda Wilson stated, “Not only does Anne Elizabeth stand out because of her pleasant demeanor and academic accolades, her uncompromising character extends far beyond the classroom as she gives her talents to the community around her. Whether raising money for the American Cancer Society or the local Crisis Pregnancy Center, volunteering at the Wayside Christian Mission, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, playing piano and spending time in the nursing home, or tutoring underclassmen in Biology, Anne Elizabeth Mason understands community involvement and genuinely gives back to the community that has provided her so much.”
The students at Elizabethtown High School respect Anne Elizabeth Mason for her academic achievements, her leadership qualities, her community efforts, and her genuine nature. The entire Panther family is proud to call Anne Elizabeth “one of ours”.
T.K. Stone Middle School Jacquelyn Flynn
Jacquelyn Flynn is an 8th grader at T.K. Stone. She is a hard working young lady who strives to be all that she can in classes. While she is a quiet student she leads with her presence and high expectations of both herself and her peers. Jacqueline shows diligence in her work ethic by applying the same high level of effort in everything she does. She is kind to her classmates and often puts their needs above her own. She helps out when and where she can, even after school. She a fabulous example of Panther Pride in action.
HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY AIDAN ALDRIDGE
What did the pen say to the pencil? So, what’s your point? If this joke has you slapping your knees, imagine spending the day with someone that keeps you laughing ALL the time. We are writing this article to inform you about our classmate, Aidan Aldridge, who has been selected as Helmwood’s Student of the Month. Here are some of the reasons we believe that Aidan deserves this great honor. Aidan is a funny guy that inspires others around him. He is also a very responsible role model. In the next few paragraphs we will show you exactly what we mean.
Comic Relief
First of all, Aidan is one funny fella! At the beginning of the school year, Aidan told the class jokes to help break the ice. Sometimes, in Social Studies, Aidan talks in a British accent to get into character and help us learn. His funny accent helps keep our attention and helps us stay focused on the lesson! Lastly, if someone is feeling down, Aidan, will find a way to brighten their day. He may use comedy or silly faces, but you can guarantee if Aidan knows you’re blue, he will come to the rescue. Wouldn’t you like to have a funny fella like this with you on a daily basis?
Responsibility Rules
Okay, okay, we know what you’re thinking, if Aidan is so busy being a comedian, he must not be focusing on his school work. That thought could not be farther from the truth. Aidan keeps his comedy in check and is actually a very responsible student. Aidan always has classroom materials and supplies on hand. If you ever need to borrow a glue stick, he’s the go to man! Secondly, his work is turned in with great effort and quality and it is always on time. Sometimes, he even reminds those around him to turn their work in too. Aidan’s actions are even responsible. He is one of those great people that does the right thing even when no one is looking. He will help a student that dropped their things or put up someone’s chair at the end of the day. As you can see, Aidan’s responsibility carries over and helps others in his class.
So Inspiring
One last amazing characteristic of Aidan is that he is inspiring! On the academic team Aidan isn’t afraid to buzz in and get an incorrect answer. He has shown us that it’s okay to make a mistake, sometimes we need to step out of our comfort zone and try something new. Aidan also inspires us to get good grades like he does. He helps others when they are having trouble with understanding a math concept, writing letters and even with social studies! Aidan inspires us to be positive role models just like him. Can you see how fortunate our class is to have Aidan each day to inspire us?
We leave you with one final joke as we wrap our article: Why did the chicken cross the playground? To get to the other slide! Hahaha, we hope we have informed you of some of the reasons why we feel Aidan is a perfect fit for Helmwood’s Student of the Month!
MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY DREW HELTON
Drew has been an outstanding student at MES since first grade. His caring, gentle spirit has helped him make friends easily and become a model to all students. Drew is a student that exemplifies the character education words, Respect and Responsibility. He consistently respects adults, his peers, school property, and the idea of being a student.
This year Drew has challenged himself to serve our school as an active participant in activities inside and outside the classroom. Drew eagerly accepts and welcomes responsibility. Earlier this year, he carefully prepared an application to join the MES Student Leadership Technology Program (STLP). Because his teachers felt he was up to the challenge and view him as a strong leader, he was selected to serve our school as a 4th grade representative.
Always striving to go above and beyond what is required, Drew is a wise student that completes all assignments on time with proficiency. Drew puts his natural talents to good use each day to help himself achieve excellence and to assist others. We are proud to call Drew Helton a MES Panther!
PANTHER ACADEMY CAMPBELL WALLACE
“Let’s get ready to rumble!!!” It’s March Madness and Panther Academy has a STAR!!! Starting at “Student of the month” is Campbell Wallace! She is a Kindergarten student in Mrs. McCurry’s class. Campbell is the true definition of a role model! She is kind to everyone, listens to her teachers, and works hard at everything she does. Her peers love to be around her and flock to her any chance they get. Her teachers would take 21 kids just like her! She has some of the neatest handwriting in the class and school! She was chosen to write on the placement for the “E” event because of her attention to detail. She has also won the “day brightener” in her class on several occasions for having spectacular work. Campbell has also turned into a reader and has read out loud to her class on a few occasions. Congratulations, Campbell! You are the true definition of what we want all E-town Panthers to be- Hardworking and kind kids.
PANTHER PLACE SENDY PHANBANDITH
Sendy is in the frith grade at Helmwood and has attended Panther Place for four years. She is a great student and delight. We love her smile; she adds sparkle to our days. Each day she has a wonderful attitude, always optimistic, kind, and sweet to staff and peers. Sendy never complains about doing homework or any of the activities that we have. She is dedicated to doing her very best and never gives less than 100% and more, no matter the task. Sendy works well with fellow students and encourages others to give their best as well.
Sendy enjoys coming to Panther Place and getting help with her homework. The art club is one of her favorite things. She particularly likes learning more about art and getting to do some of the different things the club offers. She has exhibited some wonderful artistic talent. We are very proud of her and congratulate her as our student of the month.

TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE ALUMNI AWARD
At the September 17, 2012 Board Meeting, the Board approved establishing an award for distinguished alumni to recognize, honor and celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of former EIS students. Mr. Andy Games, Tradition of Excellence Alumni Award Committee Chairman will be present at the meeting to seek board approval and to answer any questions you might have regarding the Critera and Alumni Award Nominee Application Form.
IX.D.1.
Consideration of Approval of Tradition of Excellence Alumni Award Criteria
The Committee has met on a regular basis and have developed the attached criteria for your approval. Mr. Andy Games, Committee Chairman will be on hand to answer any questions you have regarding the Tradition of Excellence Alumni Award Criteria.
IX.D.2.
Consideration of Approval of Tradition of Excellence Alumni Award Nominee Application Form
The "Tradition of Excellence Alumni Award" committee has developed a nominee application form (attached)for Board approval.
This nominee application form is based on the "Tradition of Excellence Alumni Award" criteria and follows those guidelines and will help in determining whether the careers and achievements of the nominee honor and sustain the legacy of excellence in the EIS district.
IX.E.
Consideration of Approval of Board Policy Revisions/Updates and Acknowledgement of Receipt and Review of Board Procedures
Due to regulatory deadlines and other pressisng issues, KSBA attorneys Teresa Combs and John Fogle recommend we adopt the attached policy and procedure updates now rather than wait until June (when we adopt the other policy and procedures).) Attached are the updates for the following policy and procedure areas:
Please refer to the explanatory note at the top of each draft. Also, please note the new regulation requires that board policy and procedure regarding the Use of Physical Restraint and Seclusion be in place by May 1.
- 09.2212 (policy) Use of Physical Restraint and Seclusion We are required to approve this policy
- 09.2211AP.21 (procedure) Use of Physical Restraint and Seclusion Form (Documentation of Use) We need to acknowledge receipt of this procedure
- 09.14 AP.232 (procedure) Release of Records to State Child Welfare Agency We need to acknowledge receipt of this procedure
This form has been completely redesigned and renamed to address release of student records information to representatives of an authorized state child welfare agency. The current form that it may replace is not needed because parents are notified in the annual FERPA notice that the District is not required to notify them when student record information is transferred to a school, school system or institution of postsecondary education where the student enrolls or seeks to enroll.
Although this form is not required by law, KSBA recommends the Board accept it since a new federal law authorizes such release to child welfare agencies in order to facilitate continuity of services for children placed under the protection of welfare agencies.
IX.F.
Consideration of Approval to Contract a Behavioral Consultant
Ms. Kristin Frodge, Director of Special Programs is requesting to contract a Behavioral Consultant through GRREC to help resolve the out-of -school suspension rate for African American students. Funding would be through the CEIS budget. Attached is a memorandum from Ms. Froedge with her recommendation.
IX.G.
Consideration of Approval to Purchase Filtering Software for the District
The district currently uses Netspective's hardware/software to block and filter user's access to the Internet as required by the Child Internet Protective Act. While we have been very pleased with this solution, it does not provide us with some capabilities we will need as we start to use more and more wireless internet access.
We have selected Phantom Technologies "iBoss" hardware/software to replace Netspective. This is a very robust solution and should provide a good platform as we continue our wireless expansion. The software costs for iBoss are $4,800 per year. This can be paid from current software technology funds. However, if we purchase a three-year subscription for $11,500, the cost drops to $3,800 per year - a savings of almost $1,000 per year. There are not enough funds in the software account to pay $11,520 so Mr. Mike Selvitelle, director of Assessment and Technology would like an "advance" to pay the three year subscription from General Funds with the understanding that the software sccount would be reduced by $3,800 for the next three years.

Brother to Brother Presentation
The Brother to Brother Academy has been in existence for five years and currently has twenty-one males enrolled, eight of which are students from the Elizabethtown Independent School District.
The Academy's objective is to assist in closing the achievement gap for selected students, targeting but not limited to African American males in grades 6-12. The program is held at the Vaughn Reno Starks Community Center, First Baptist Church in Elizabethtown on Saturday mornings from 9:30a.m. to 1:00p.m. Five teachers volunteer their time and instructional expertise to work with these young men on mathematics, language arts, and life skills.
The Brother-to-Brother mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of young males by providing them with culturally, spritually, and educationally based experiences. Partnering with schools, organizations, and community groups, the Academy also provides enrichment activities for the students.
Monday night some of these students will share their Brother-to-Brother experiences.
