A.     STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                                                                              ZACH McMAHAN

Zach McMahan has been chosen as the May Student of the Month from Elizabethtown High School.  Zach is a senior and has been involved in many activities during his 4 years.  He has been a member of the EHS Pep Club, a manger for the boys basketball team (freshman year), manager for the track team (sophomore and junior years), and a manager for the cross country team (sophomore, junior, and senior years).  During his junior and senior year, Zach has participated in our work transition program.  Mr. Johnson, Zach’s job coach comments, “I have had the pleasure of working with Zach McMahan in the Community Based Work Transition Program (CBWTP) for the last two years and during that period he has grown in confidence and his abilities. Despite numerous health issues, he turned a temporary intern position with the Etown Swim and Fitness Center into a regular job by impressing management with his strong work ethic, customer service skills, commitment and dedication.  Zach is capable young man who handles situations with thoughtfulness and maturity”.

In addition to being a student, Zach has also had the opportunity to be “Principal for a Day” all four years of high school.  He persuaded his grandparents to buy this honor at the football team auction each year.  Zach also wrote a proposal letter to Mr. Smallwood to start a recycling program at EHS.  Mr. Smallwood presented Zach’s letter to the school board which led to the development of the recycling committee, The Green Team, in which Zach was appointed secretary.

Zach’s senior class voted him “Most School Spirit” because of his undying Panther Pride.  Zach led many cheers at basketball games and on the buses while traveling with the teams he managed.

As you can see, Zach definitely bloods purple and gold and is very proud to be an Elizabethtown Independent School student.

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL                                    CALLIE HORNBACK

“Barking” News! Callie – Student of the Month!

“Dog”-gone we wish we could be more like Callie.  We are writing this article to inform you about our classmate, Callie Hornback.  She recently received the honorary title of Helmwood’s Student of the Month.  Three charming characteristics that describe Callie include: animal lover, responsible student and respectful individual.  Read on to discover some of the reasons we feel Callie was elected Student of the Month.

Animal Lover

First, let us describe Callie’s caring personality through her love for animals.  Callie once volunteered her time for the ASPCA, an animal rescue center.   She recently adopted a Mal-shi puppy named Bella.  Callie’s incredible love for animals is displayed each week when she checks out library books on animals.  This proves that animals must be her favorite topic for reading!  So Helmwood friends, can you see Callie’s caring personality portrayed in her infinite love for animals?

Responsible Student

Secondly, we are going to describe how Callie displays responsibility as a 5th grade student at Helmwood.  The first way Callie shows this responsibility is by keeping up with materials for projects.  Her partners always allow Callie to keep up with the goods so they don’t get misplaced.  Also, Callie always does her homework and gets it turned in on time.  Lastly, Callie shows responsibility with the choices she makes on a daily basis.  Now, we hope you can understand how Callie displays responsibility.

Respectful Role Model

Finally, we want you to know how respectful Callie is to her peers and teachers.  Callie has fantastic manners and always says please and thank you.  She would never talk back to anyone because that would be rude and disrespectful.  Lastly, Callie respects others feelings.  Callie always shows concern for an upset friend.  Callie is a role model for how all students should use respect for others.

“Dog-gone”, we are proud of Callie.  Helmwood friends, we hope we informed you of the many wonderful characteristics Callie portrays.  If you see her in the hall, offer her your congratulations.  She is a wonderful representative for Helmwood’s student of the month! Students participating in the Duke Tip are recognized for their test scores, provided with detailed information about their abilities, and introduced to a network of academic opportunities and resources available to them based on their scores, including educational programs offered by Duke TIP and others.

XIII.A.2. Approve the Authorization to Re-Apply for the Community Based Work Transition Program Grant for the 2012-2013 School Year.
Rationale

Our district has participated in the Community Based Work Transition Program for many years.  This program specifically funds our Job Coach and vocational programming designed for eligible students at Elizabethtown High School.  A primary goal of this program is to provide employment settings within the community where our students will develop job skills and placement in paid positions upon graduation or aging out of special education.  Our district must commit to cover 25% of the cost of said program while Vocational Rehabilitation grant funding covers the remaining 75%.

This program is categorized as a federal program for the 2012-2013 school year.  Our district will also incur the costs of the employee's benefits if sufficient funds are not available through the Vocational Rehabilitation grant funding.  The total cost of the actual program is $23,359.  Vocational Rehabilation funding of $15,948 is insufficient to cover total costs.  Therefore, a district obligation of $7,759 is needed to maintain programming.  The preliminary 2012-103 IDEA B budget includes funding designated toward this programming with up to $8,000 with supplemental funding to be provided through WHAS grant funds if approved.
