Rationale

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                        LACEY BOONE
Lacey Boone possesses everything a college or future employer will be looking for and has success written all over her!  She is responsible, dependable, personable, and hard working.  She knows how to manage her time (she has to given all of her extracurricular activities) and isn't afraid of a challenge.  Math teacher, Susan Collins, states, "Lacey tries each problelm assigned and drops by before or after school when needed to ask questions.  She understands that challenges help us grow and takes the initiative to push herself each day to be a better person.  Lacey is a wonderful role-model and a joy to teach."  Coach Bart Catlett says that Lacey was a key ingredient to the volleyball team's "great chemestry", is a very hard worker, and always puts her teammates and the teams accomplishments first and foremost.  Cheerleading Coach Joella Nall states, "Lacey is a born leader with a huge heart and a fantastic attitude.  She has been a great asset to our cheerleading squad.  She has an uncanny ability to motivate others with positivity and good humor.  She is a talented athlete and a remarkable young lady."  Obviously, Lacey is well respected by all who know her and she has made a valuable contribution to her teams and her school.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                               KONNOR DUWE
Konnor Duwe is an advocate of the three R's:  Reliable, Responsible and Ready-to-Go.  Whether he is on the running trail, on the basketball court, or in the classroom, he is prepared to do his job.  Konnor can be counted on to have his work done so that he can help his team crossing the finish line quickly or shooting three point shots.  He aids his classmates by participating in class and guiding others through confusing concepts, all of this with a smile and/or a look of determination.  Konnor is a team player who helps others improve and therefore continues to make himself a better person.  Go Konnor!

HELMWOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY                        AMANDA SISOUMANKHARA
It is no surprise to us, in Mrs. Davis' class, that Amanda Sisoumankhara is Helmwood's Student of the Month!  In fact, it was easy to come up with several reasons and examples outlining why she is so deserving of this honor.  If you're wondering what makes a great student at Helmwood, take it from the pros who spend each and every day with her, Amanda's classmates.  Read on to hear some wonderful quotes about this outstanding student, person and friend!
We think Amanda is a great friend and here's why:

you."  Anabeth Johnson

"If she borrows something, such as a library book, she always brings it back.  I have never seen her without her library book." - Austin Woosley

Can you tell Amanda is definately a deserving recipient of Helmwood's Student of the month?  Congratulations to this outstanding person we are lucky to have in our classroom.  One final thought from Mrs. Davis..."Since the very first day of school, Amanda stood out as a leader by example.  She is a diligent worker, paying close attention to detail in her work, she is a good friend to EVERYONE in our classroom, and she strives to be her personal best in all areas.  Congratulations to you, Amanda!"

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY                         TATUM MARDIS

PANTHER ACADEMY                                         KAIA DAVIS
Kaia Davis is a kindergarten student in Mrs. Schubeler's class.  She has an excellent attitude each and every day.  She is kind to everyone and goes out of her way to help others.  She puts forth 100% effort in all areas.  Kaia never gets discouraged, even when she has tough challenges.

Kaia is a fine example representing Panther Academy, as she continually displays a Commitment to Character.  She truly is...respectful, responsible, cooperative, and kind.

PANTHER PLACE                                              TAYLER BAILEY
Tayler is in Ms. Cann's fifth grade class at Helmwood Heights Elementary.  She has attended Panther Place since the first grade.  We have seen her grow into a very strong conscientious student.  She truely desires to do well and works very hard to complete all her homework while at Panther Place.

Tayler has worked hard this year to overcome some personal struggles as well.  She has had to learn how to handle her frustrations in an acceptable manner and has really come a long way in doing that this year.  She is very self-controlled even in tough situations.  I applaud her efforts in this area.

Tayler is honest and trustworthy.  She is a good friend to her classmates.  I have witnessed her defending someone who was wrongly accoused and sticking up for those who are being bullied.

Our fifth grade teacher, Ms. Pait wrote, "Tayler is a pleasure to have in my class at Panther Place.  She is a conscientious and determined young lady.  She is a hard worker and does a wonderful job completing her homework each day.  She is always quick to offer help to other students in our class.  I am proud of Tayler and excited to see all she will accomplish in the future."

Tayler enjoys gymnastics and playing outdoors when she is not in school.  We are proud to name Tayler as our March student of the month.

IV.B. EHS Essay Contest Winner
Rationale

CREATIVE COMMUNICATION ESSAY CONTEST  FINALIST                JENNIFER PINTO

Earlier this year, Jennifer Pinto, an 11th grade English Honors student, entered the Creative Communication Essay Contest.  A few weeks after she submitted her essay, she learned that her essay had been chosen for publication in the anthology Celebrating What is Important to Me.  At that time, the committee had not yet chosen the contest winners, but on February 14th, we were notified that Jennifer's essay had been chosen as a Top Ten Winner.  The letter states that Jennifer's essay was "selected out of several thousand entries as one of the ten best essays in the contest for the U.S. and Canada."  In the high school division, not only is Jennifer the only 11th grader who was selected, but she was the only student from Kentucky.  In fact, she was the only Kentucky student to be chosen as a contest winner in any grade, 4-12.

Jennifer's essay, entitled Snowflakes:  Dazzling Deceptive, compared expectations and snowflakes.  To quote her thoughts:

How can I begin to adopt a peaceful state of mind when expectations keep
piling up?  Expectations are inevitable.  Just like winter arrives every year,
expectations are constantly present.  I will just have to keep shoveling the
snow as it comes, because without it, the world would not be nearly as
                beautiful.

Jennifer certainly has met and exceeded expectations in winning this contest.  We are extremely proud of her accomplishments.

IV.C. EHS Swim Team KHSAA 5th Region Champions
Rationale

We are recognizing the EHS Swim Team for winning the KHSAA 5th Region Swim Competition They went on to compete at the state level.

Coach Mavi wrote these words about this years team:

5th on the girls team, 5th on the combine, and 23rd on the boys. Hard to ask for more than that...
Results, individual awards, and team points are all attached.
A couple things I would like to highlight:
- The girls team were only 11 points from being 3rd !!!!- The KHSAA only consider schools that has both boys and girls for the combine scores.

- Last season we were 8th on the girls, 8th on the combine, and 36 on the boys.

- There has been a long time (15 or more years) since we have had a swimmer Selected on the All-State Team or as an All-American status. Manuela was on the 2nd team All State and got the All-American consideration performance on the 100 Breaststroke.

- There has also been a long time since we have had anyone (or any team) on top 3. And our 200 Free relay was 3rd yesterday (MC, Madeline, Esther, Hannah).

- School records this season:

    • 100 Breast: Manuela
    • 200 IM: Manuela
    • 200 Free Relay (MC, Madeline, Esther, Hannah)
    • 400 Free Relay (MC, Manuela, Madeline, Esther)

I would also like to point that from all the schools that are ahead of us (and a couple that are behind too) are schools that are in big cities (Louisville, Park Hills/Cincinnati). Great achievement for our little town High School Swim Team.

And also that these schools do not "train" the swimmers that swam at the State meet. Their swimmers practice at multiple clubs (Lakeside, Cardinals, Tritons, Northern KY Clippers, Cincy Marlins, etc), and our swimmers belong to one team only: ET Dolphins.

Another interesting data on the High School State is that none of the High School coaches that we are "fighting with" actually coach their athletes. As I mention before, they are a bunch of swimmers who come from different teams, and are coached by different coaches. But not Etown !!!!!!!  We are a TEAM, top to bottom !!!!

GO PANTHERS !!!

Coach Mavi

"The harder you work, the luckier you get".

IV.D. AmeriCorps Presentation
Rationale

Representatives from AmeriCorp and The Lincoln Trail District Health Department will attend the board meeting to make a presentation  regarding a 1/2 - 3/4 mile walking trail that will be located at the Valley View Education Center.

This project will meet the United Way's focus areas of education and health in one of the community's priority neighborhoods.  The walking trail will be situated on the property of the United Way's funded program, Panther Place, which provides after-school and education enrichment for at-risk youth.  The walking trails will furnish healthy life-style options for these  youth and their families, as well as an opportunity for the children attending Panther Place to take pride in maintaining the trails.  Additionally, a community garden will allow neighborhood families the opportunity to re-invest in their community through continue maintanaince of  garden area.

Students and families of EIS and the community will experience greater health benefits from the walking trail and the garden boxes.  This will expand opportunities for service learning projects and will provide a new venue for mentors to meet with students and spend time with them while pursuing physical activity and learning about gardening and the health benefits of fresh vegetables.
