I. Update on Strategy 1.1.5, Improve Student Literacy
Rationale

Click Here for Work Session MP3

Strategy 1.1.5 – Improve student literacy focuses on the development and implementation of comprehensive initiatives that focus on early intervention with an intended outcome of all third grade students reading on or above grade level by the end of third grade, otherwise known as the Third Grade Reading Pledge.

The presentation will focus on four key initiatives: JCPS Kindergarten Readiness Camps, Summer Literacy Boost, YMCA Summer Partnerships and the JCPS Bellarmine Literacy Project. An overview of the purpose and intended outcome, the target audience, the approximate cost and the impact on student achievement will be included in the presentation as we highlight each program.

If the Third Grade Reading Pledge is the intended outcome of this strategy, then we must serve all K-3 students not yet reading on grade level rather than just some K-3 students in Title I schools.  A vision for serving all K-3 students in the JCPS Summer Literacy Boost, not just some K-3 students from Title I schools will be included in the presentation for future consideration.
