II. Review of Proposed 2013-14 Code of Acceptable Behavior and Discipline and The Student Bill of Rights
Rationale

Purpose of the Session: Our valued outcome for this presentation is to ensure Board Members gain insight into the foundation of our Code of Conduct, the process used to update the Code so that it is better and more responsive for students, families and our own staff and how we have put in place a layer of proactive strategies to support “safe and orderly learning environments” for each student.

  1. Discussion of the Purpose of the Code of Conduct
  2. Description of the Process for Revising the Code of Conduct
  3. Distinguishing the former code from the new Code of Conduct
  4. Proactive Strategies we have in place as a District System

Some Key Additional Details:

  • The Table of Contents will not be revised until after this session, since changes may well happen.
  • The Code of Conduct outlines the appeals process families can turn to if further review is desired
  • It provides for a consistency in our district’s discipline plan—it is about communicating our EXPECTATIONS and CONSEQUENCES so everyone shares the same understanding.
  • Discipline is a positive word—in its best sense it about staying focused and following something with fidelity—“disciples” come from the same root.
  • There are three components to any incident—the “antecedent” that comes before the event, the event itself, and the CONSEQUENCE that follows the event. Our goal is to help students learn how to “restore” and learn how to navigate in society.
