IV.A. Student Demonstration of Learning and Achievement from Fern Creek Traditional High School and Ballard High School Students
Rationale

Conrad Bachmann, a Louisville native and long-time Hollywood actor, has been a significant partner of the District’s Communication, Media, and the Arts (CMA) theme schools since the Professional Career Theme was launched four years ago.

Students from the CMA schools have been involved with Bachmann’s Louisville International Festival of Film since the inception of the Professional Career Theme program. This past summer, Bachmann had a role in a small film and approached the director to suggest the idea of bringing three students from the JCPS CMA schools to Los Angeles to intern for a week on the film. His director, Matt Berman, agreed and sponsored the flight, transportation, and hotel stay for the students and their chaperone.

An application and audition process was established to select the three students. Applicants were required to submit an extensive portfolio that included letters of recommendation, transcripts, work samples, and an essay. A panel of judges was put together that consisted of local filmmakers, postsecondary partners, and JCPS Communications staff. Judges narrowed the pool of candidates after reviewing the portfolios. The candidates were invited for an interview with the judges, and they were required to set up a camera in the interview session to tape themselves to demonstrate that they could operate a camera.

A requirement of the students’ trip was to create a documentary highlighting their experience. The students will show a brief video highlighting their trip and will talk about what they learned from their experience.
