I. Work Session: Progress Report on High School Professional Career Themes
Rationale

The following staff members will present a report and answer Board members' questions concerning high school professional career themes:

  • Joe Burks, assistant superintendent, Districtwide Instructional Services-High Schools;
  • Dr. Brian Shumate, high school liaison;
  • Ken Talley, director, School to Career;
  • Glen Baete, principal, Doss High School;
  • Lana Kaelin, principal, Eastern High School;
  • Gary Hurt, principal, Valley Traditional High School; and
  • Houston Barber, principal, Fern Creek Traditional High School

 

Beginning with the 2010-11 school year, 15 of our comprehensive high schools will adopt one of the following five professional career themes that align with regional economic and workforce projections:

  • Building and Designing the Future (Engineering/Construction)
  • Sustaining Ourselves and the Planet (Medicine/Health/Environment)
  • Cultivating Leadership and Innovation (Business/Information Technology)
  • Engaging and Enlightening our Community (Communication/Media/Arts)
  • Creating our Global Community (Human Services/Education/International Studies)

This report will include an update on the progress of the curriculum, schools of study, and structures to support the professional career themes that will be initiated in the 2010-11 school year.
