Work Session: Elementary Report Card
I. Work Session: Elementary Report Card
Rationale

The Report Card Committee has worked hard to address concerns expressed by faculty and administrators regarding the format of the elementary report card. The committee was expanded to include more teachers and administrators representing groups that needed to have input into the design of the report card. The committee decided that it was important to retain the standards-based direction of the report card; however, they separated the performance and progress sections of the report card so it would be easier for parents to understand. They also reinstated the use of O, S, NI, and U for grades P1-P3 (k-2) and special areas, thereby providing more flexibility to teachers in these areas without the early labeling that letter grades may create. Other adjustments were made throughout the report card to enhance readability, provide space for comments,, and make it more understandable.

The report card will be piloted in a “mock trial” at several schools, whereby teachers will test the new report card by filling it out for several students in their classes. These cards will not be distributed, but the process of completing them will give us a good idea of any problems that may exist with the proposed changes. MIS is going to work to put the final report card online so that it can be accessed through Parent Portal, as well. The pilot and any further changes will be completed this Spring and the revised report card will be used next year.

Amy Dennes, interim assistant superintendent for elementary schools, and the following members of the Report Card Committee will provide information and answer board members' questions concerning the revised elementary report card:

  • Alicia Averette, principal of Breckinridge-Franklin Elementary School;
  • Nancy Banet, teacher at Gutermuth Elementary School;
  • Justin Elliott, teacher at Engelhard Elementary School;
  • Paula Miller, resource teacher, Analytical and Applied Sciences;
  • Steve St. Clair, middle school liaison;
  • Royce Whitman, librarian at Crums Lane Elementary School.
