Work Session: Update on the Backpack League Summer Learning Initiative
I. Update on the Backpack League Summer Learning Initiative
Rationale

11 26 19 Work Session Audio

Jefferson County Public Schools launched an exciting summer learning initiative for students entering grades 3-6 in the 2019-20 school year. This four-week experience allowed students to engage in hands-on, deeper learning experiences taking them into the community for field trips every week.  Students were able to create artifacts demonstrating their growth as productive collaborators, globally and competent citizens, emerging innovators, effective communicators, and prepared and resilient learners.

The Backpack League has some early outcomes to support the continued need for transformed learning environments for JCPS students. This focus will continue to broaden the definition of learning and success as a means for obtaining transition readiness skills.  Student and teacher outcomes plus parent perception data indicate the district’s focus on summer learning, as a  priority, provides meaningful experiences for students beyond the traditional school calendar year.

Based on the first year of implementation, the District has made adjustments for deeper engagement for the summer 2020.

This project supports Vision 2020 strategy 1.1.1- Broader definition of learning
