Work Session: Magnet Steering Committee Presentation
I. JCPS Magnet Steering Committee: Update and Progress
Rationale

Audio: 9 27 2016 Work Session

The JCPS Magnet Steering Committee will present updates on work in progress and completed since May 2016 on two specific issues. First, the Steering Committee will present draft magnet program standards, which represent “best practices” for magnets based on national research. These standards can be used by existing magnet schools/programs to reflect on areas of strength and improvement needs as well as by schools proposing new magnets as guidance to develop sustainable, “magnetic” programs. Second, the Magnet Steering Committee will present feedback to the Board on the current policy for the Options/Magnets Exit Process for Students. The Board requested the steering committee review this policy, which allows all district optional and magnet programs to exit students for low achievement, attendance, or behavior violations. The Committee reviewed district data and received community, family, and school input to arrive at the current proposal. The Board will have an opportunity to offer feedback on these two issues presented by the Committee. No action will be taken by the Board in the work session.

The Committee functions in an advisory capacity by offering insight and recommendations to district leaders who oversee JCPS optional and magnet programs and schools in order to ensure a variety of equitable, high-quality magnets for students. The Committee is composed of community members, parents, teachers, principals, students, and central office staff.
