Update on Bellarmine Literacy Project
I. 2016 Winter Update, Bellarmine Literacy Project
Rationale

Audio: 2 23 2016 Work Session 3

The JCPS Bellarmine Literacy Project is in its second year of implementation with 39 Title I, high-need elementary schools participating in the project. Approximately 450 teachers, 41 coaches, 25 instructors and 39 principals are involved in ongoing graduate level coursework and training. The project identified and selected schools via data analysis, to provide research-based literacy training to teachers and principals in an effort to support the Third Grade Reading Pledge. A list of participating schools is attached.

All teachers and principals participating in the project engage in ongoing coursework offered by Bellarmine University. Teachers are learning key literacy strategies that, when implemented with fidelity, will improve student literacy outcomes. Teachers who participated in year 1 of the Bellarmine Literacy Project were invited to participate in advanced coursework in year 2 as they expand their expertise in research-based literacy strategies.

This presentation will provide an overview of the data collected from the first and second cohort of schools participating in the project.

Future plans for year 3 of the project include serving up to 650 teachers at approximately 60 elementary schools as an integral strategy to ensure all students are reading on grade level by the end of third grade.
