Work Session: Update on Early Childhood and Head Start
I. Update on Early Childhood Program, Kindergarten Readiness Camps, and BRIGANCE® Results
Rationale

Audio: 1 11 2016 Board Meeting

Strategy 1.1.6 of the district's Vision 2020 addresses strengthening Early Childhood Programs and kindergarten readiness. The JCPS Early Childhood Program provides early learning services for our most at-risk young children with an intentional focus on improving school readiness. Our program exists so that participating students are deemed school ready when they enter kindergarten.

This presentation will address our strategies to support school readiness for all JCPS Early Childhood students. We will provide an overview of the recently submitted Head Start Grant Application so that board members understand the changes in structure, organization and focus as outlined in the Head Start grant application.

In addition, we will provide an overview of the 2015 BRIGANCE Kindergarten Readiness Screen as well as our plans to improve Kindergarten Readiness including the expansion of Kindergarten Readiness Camps for the summer of 2016.

The BRIGANCE® Kindergarten Readiness Screen is administered to all JCPS Kindergarten students and screens students in five domains: Cognitive and General Knowledge Language and Communication, Social Emotional Development, Self-Help Skills, and Health and Physical Well-Being. BRIGANCE® results were recently released by the Kentucky Department of Education.
