KSBA Training: Black and White and Grey of School Board Member Ethics
I. KSBA In-Service Training Session: Black and White and Grey of School Board Member Ethics
Rationale

Brad Hughes, Director of Member Support and Communications Services, at Kentucky School Boards Association will facilitate this 75-minute training session on school board member ethics, which fulfills the one hour school board member ethics in-service training required under 702 KAR 1:115 Annual in-service training of district board members as outlined below.

Black and White and Grey of School Board Member Ethics:
School board members are decision makers.  But the choices they face aren't always clear-cut, and sometimes they involve personal as well as official issues. This class is designed to provide examples of potential ethical questions that school board members face, and to encourage thoughtful consideration of how some actions and decisions can be perceived by the taxpaying public.

Required annual training for board members: By law, local board members in Kentucky are required to complete an established number of hours of in-service training annually as follows:

  • Twelve (12) hours training for school board members with zero to three (3) years of experience, including one hour of school board member ethics, three hours of finance and one hour of superintendent evaluation.
  • Eight (8) hours training for school board members with four (4) to seven (7) years of experience, including one hour of school board member ethics, two hours of finance and one hour of superintendent evaluation.
  • Four (4) hours training for school board members with eight (8) or more years of experience, including one hour of school board member ethics, one hour of finance and one hour every other year of superintendent evaluation.
