Emily Johnston, HCHS, Named Semifinalist for 2015 Kentucky Teacher of the Year by the Kentucky Department of Education and Ashland Inc.

One of nine to be named as semifinalist.  Winners will be named on October 23.

Chosen based on their scores from the first round of judging, which was conducted by a blue-ribbon panel of veteran educators.  Applications included information on nominees’ teaching philosophies, teaching experiences, involvement in their respective communities and letters of recommendations.  Nominees will also receive a classroom visit and personal interview.

II.C. Leslie Bartow, East Heights Elementary School
Rationale

Leslie Bartow, East Heights, The Fund for Transforming Education in Kentucky  named Leslie Bartow, as one of twenty-one teachers to its new Innovative Teacher Leader Cohort. After undergoing a rigorous review process, teachers were ultimately chosen for their leadership ability in fostering a collaborative culture, promoting professional learning, and publicizing teaching and learning.  The main goal of this group is to promote teacher leadership across the Commonwealth-will first identify what it means to be a teacher leader, which for teachers sometimes means leading in informal ways while remaining in the classroom.

II.D. Madison Sewell, Henderson County High School
Rationale

Students in the Criminal Law Program at Henderson County High School, Career and Technical Education Unit, were the guest speakers at the Henderson County Bar Association meeting on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Worsham Hall. 

The students, along with their teacher, Madison Sewell, presented a summary of recent notable criminal cases from the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals (a federal court covering Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and Tennessee.)   

Alex Bovey, Alicia Brinkley, Evan Chaney, Richard Colonel, Paige Gibson, Trey Miley, Carter Phipps, and Taylor Rowley were the first students in Henderson, Kentucky, to provide Continuing Legal Education credits for local lawyers.
