VIII.E.2. 2025 Spanish Club Trip-FCHS
Rationale

The Franklin County High School Spanish Club is requesting approval to plan and participate in a trip to visit Spain in June of 2025. A description of the trip is detailed below.

Over the last 30 years, Franklin County High School World Language students have participated in over 25 educational and cultural trips throughout Europe and the United States.  More than 500 students have been part of these experiences visiting such places as France, Spain, Costa Rica, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, England, North Africa, New York, Chicago, and Washington DC.  The results of these cultural experiences have been nothing short of amazing.  A large number of students who participated in these trips have returned to those countries and cities where they have studied, lived, taught, and used their language learning in ways they never thought possible.  Several students, at this moment, are living, studying, and teaching in both Europe and Asia.

We are asking for permission for this educational and sometimes life-changing tradition to continue this year by providing up to 30 Spanish students and 5 chaperones the opportunity to visit Spain for up to a 10-day educational tour through CHA educational tours to be scheduled during the summer of the 2024- 2025 school year. The exact dates of the trip have not yet been set however, we plan to travel the first week of June, after graduation to avoid student absences the days school is in session. Students will be responsible for covering their individual travel expenses, but we plan to fundraise to help buffer the cost as much as possible.

On this trip, we plan to visit a variety of different cities such as the capital city of Madrid, Barcelona,  Seville, Granada, and Costa del Sol. Students will have the opportunity to tour the Royal Palace, and El Prado Museum of Madrid, view breathtaking architecture in Barcelona such as the unfinished cathedral La Sagrada Familia by architect Antoni Gaudi, tour the Alhambra Palace of Granada and enjoy the world-famous beaches and warmer climate of La Costa del Sol. Students will also have the option to attend live Flamenco dancing performances, Most importantly for our world language program, students will also be provided with the opportunity to interact with a multitude of native Spanish speakers, using their language skills and their classroom learning in a variety of real-life situations.

Thank you for your consideration of such a rich and valuable learning opportunity for our students as they continue their journey as second-language learners. Through traveling to Spain with their peers and teachers, the students will be able to broaden their ability to use the language, while making real-life intercultural connections. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for students to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to navigate and succeed in today’s increasingly interconnected world and provide them with a dynamic perspective with regard to global competency.
