IX.E. EES 3rd Grade: Out of State Field Trip Request: Falls of the Ohio
Rationale

Our third grade team would like to take students to Falls of the Ohio.  They actually got the idea from curriculum documents posted on a shared district drive that states the unit about fossils was placed were it was so that students could even visit the Falls of the Ohio.

Here is the text from the curriculum document:

The third grade year in science begins with the study of the difference between weather and climate as students gain a global perspective of climate patterns around the world. Students are asked to investigate a solution to reduce the impact of a weather-related hazard and make a claim about the merit of the design solution. From this global perspective of climate, third grade students then move into the study of habitats found around the world. Students begin this second unit with the study of fossils and how they provide evidence of the survival of organisms and their environments from long ago.(This unit was placed in the 3rd grade sequence at this point in order to give third graders a chance to visit Falls of the Ohio and study the fossil beds and learn about regional fossils and plant and animal life from long ago.) Based on these investigations students move on into Unit 3 where they will further develop an understanding about how the survival of plants and animals depends on the stability of the environment and how some animals work together in order to survive in a habitat. Unit 4 takes third graders in a new direction as they begin to investigate forces and motion of an object. Students will be asked to collect, organize, and display data to be used as evidence to support their thinking about the effects of certain forces on the motion of objects. The work in this unit prepares students to investigate magnets in Unit 5, where students will be asked to define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets. Unit 6 takes third graders back to plants and animals during the spring months as students study traits and how they can use evidence from data to determine that plants and animals have traits inherited form parents and that variations of these traits exists in a group of similar organisms. The final unit of the third grade year moves students on into the study of life cycles and back to the idea of survival from the study of fossils and habitats during the fall months.

They would like to take the trip on October 30th.
