V.A. Students of the Month
Rationale

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                                MAGGIE SHERRARD
Maggie Sherrard has been selected as the EHS Student of the Month for April.  Maggis is a very hard worker, a student who has always challenged herself.  Each year, Maggie has chosen a steady core of challenging courses and worked diligently.  One of Maggie's teachers comments, "Maggie is very mature for her age, she takes her coursework seriously and completes all assignments in a timely manner.  She is always respectful and curteous to teachers and administration.  Maggie is very reliable too, if asked to run errands or help peer tutor, rest assured that the job will be done to perfection.  In addition, she is well liked and gets along very well with her peers.  This is evidenced by her extracurricular participation in and out of school."  In addition to Maggie's diligence in the classroom, she is also involved in numerous extracurricular and community service activities.  She has been a member of the girls varsity soccer team since 2009 where she played defender and earned an athletic letter, 1st team academic all-state, most improved JV player (2009) and helped to lead her team to 3 district championships, 2 region championships, 1 sweet sixteen appearances and 1 elite eight appearance; a member of the varsity track team (2009-present) where she earned an athletic letter, 1st team academic all-state, region/conference winner in 2010 in the 4x8 relay; a member of pep club, SADD club, and fellowship of Christian athletics.  Maggie has logged many volunteer hours participating in the following:  serving at a local soup kitchen and a kids cafe', serving Thanksgiving dinners, angel tree volunteer, door greeter at church, and youth soccer camp worker.

EHS is very proud and honored to name Maggie Sherrard as April EHS Student of the Month.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                                    PEYTON DOZER
I have had the pleasure of teaching Peyton Dozer in Algebra 1 this year.  She is a vibrant young lady that brings a world of life to my first period class.  Her personality and attitude have been an asset to the class and the start of my day.  The teachers and staff are honored to have Peyton Dozer be our Student of the Month.  She is a top notch student that carries herself with class and an enthusiastic attitute toward learning.
Thanks for all you do Peyton

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY                             SHELBY BUTLER
Shelby Butler is a wonderful student to have in class!  She is the model of what you want to see from all students because she is responsible, kind to everyone, and enthused about being in school.  One way Shelby is responsible is she gives up her time in the morning to come to the classroom to help her teacher.  At this time, she helps get the classroom ready for the day such as sharpening pencils, filing papers, running errands or whatever is needed.  Shelby extends kindness to her classmates every day.  She readily includes them in group work.  If someone is sad, she is always there to give them a hug to cheer them up or to offer words of encouragement and support.  Shelby is fun to have in class.  Her enthusiasm and learning are connected every day.  One great example of this is our study of economics and being an entrepreneur.  Shelby started her own Duct Tape business!  She makes accessories out of duct tape for people to purchase.  But instead of keeping the money herself, she donates the proceeds to St. Jude's.  Another example of her being enthused about learning and making connections is when her teacher passed a new law, or act, for the class without getting any input from the students.  Shelby felt this was like the colonists'  "Np taxation without representation", so she wrote a class petition to have the rule repealed.

After reading this, I hope you see why Shelby is Helmwood's Student of the Month for April.  She is responsible in many ways, kind to everyone and always enthused about her learning.

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY                                        NUBIA COLONDRES
Nubia Colondres has been selected as Morningside’s Student of the Month.  Nubia comes to school well prepared and ready to learn each and every day!  She gives 110% in everything.  Nubia excels in her academics, but more importantly than that, she is a kind hearted,  model classroom citizen ready and willing to help anyone in need.  She leads by example and is an asset to our class.  Her positive attitude spills over to others in our class.

Nubia loves animals and has a dog and hamster as pets.  She enjoys tumbling classes twice a week and spends a lot of her free time at home reading chapter books.  She also enjoys playing Pet Shops and Monster High with friends and various virtual games on her Tablet.

Nubia is very deserving of this honor!

PANTHER ACADEMY                                                        ELLE MADISON BRYANT
Elle Bryant is a top-notch Kindergarten student.  She not only “says” our character word of the day, but she practices it as well.  She is very respectful to other students and adults as well, cooperative in and outside the classroom,  compassionate toward others, and loyal to her friends and her school.  I can always count on Elle to have a kind word and a BIG smile.  She is beautiful on the inside as well as on the outside.

Elle is the kind of student that will always give you 110%.  She stays on task and gets her work done.  There is nothing I can throw at her that she isn’t afraid to tackle.  Her determination and attention to detail is what makes her stand out in the classroom.  No matter what the task is in class, Elle will go above and beyond what is asked of her.  Her favorite thing to do is write and illustrate.  Her creativity in these areas has really grown the past few months.  Another area that Elle stands out in is LEADERSHIP.  Students take note and “watch” what Elle is doing.  I am always using her as a role model in my classroom.  It is no wonder that Elle was elected class president by her classmates. It would not surprise me if one day she became President of the United States.

It is very apparent that her parents have taken a vested interest in her education and her development as a responsible student.  I applaud their efforts in setting high expectations for her and helping her achieve them.  One thing I love most about Elle is her love for learning.  She gets so excited about everything we do in class.  Her attitude is always positive and uplifting.  When I am having a bad day I can look at Elle and smile and it reminds me why I do what I do! PANTHER PLACE                                                        JACE McCALL
We are stepping out of the norm tonight and recognizing a very special person involved with Panther Place, though not a student attending the program.  Jace is an eighth grader and attends T. K. Stone.  He came as a student to Panther Place in August 2007, and has been with us ever since.  Students attend Panther Place in first through fifth grade.  As Jace finished fifth grade and moved on to middle school, he asked if he could return and volunteer as an assistant, helping with homework, activities, whatever I needed him to do. I readily accepted his offer. That was a great decision on my part because Jace has proven to be a wonderful leader and encourager to the students and a vital assistant to staff.  Dependable, he rarely misses the program.  He shows great compassion, patience and motivation in helping these students; an understanding far beyond his years.  Jace works with all grade levels, but first grade in particular.  I often just step back and watch how he interacts with them.  He encourages them to do their work correctly, take pride in what they do and helps them understand the importance of these things.  He is just as quick to address poor behavior and do so in a caring, positive manner. I have never seen him lose patience or be short with a student.  Though I have witnessed him taking a deep breath a few times.  He is a fine example of leadership for all, students and adults.

I ask Jace what brings him back year after year to volunteer with us.  He told me he loves getting to know the kids, interacting with them, helping them learn to appreciate their education and take it seriously.  His favorite activities with the students are the clubs, fitness, and special activities.

Beyond spending most every afternoon with us, Jace is very active.  He plays trumpet in the band, is in KUNA , which he really enjoys,  and is also involved in track.  He tells me his favorite subjects are English and Social Studies and he loves to read.  I hear he reads all the time,” just for fun” and I see him grabbing ten minutes between buses, always with a book open, reading.

For all the wonderful things he does, the time he spends, and the guidance he gives the kids of Panther Place and for the wonderful individual he is, we wish to honor Jace as our student of the month.
