V. RECOGNITION OF GUESTS AND OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
V.A. Students of the Month
Rationale

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                               LEXY HAZEL

Lexy Hazle is the epitome of what leadership should look like. She is an athlete, a very high achieving student, and well respected by her peers as well as teachers. Her classmates voted her as the Football Homecoming Queen.  She helped lead her soccer team to the state semi-finals and is involved in many extracurricular activities and is in a leadership position in most of those activities. She takes pride in everything she does, setting high standards for herself , even though she knows that achieving her goals will take a lot of work.  She has a sincere and honest concern for others but what stands out to me is her ability to do all of these things with the utmost humility. She never brags or boasts and is willing to lend a hand to help anyone. She is committed to her school, community, and her education.  I cannot say enough about how much I respect this young lady as a student and a person; she has made that kind of impact at our school and community.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                                    ETHAN EITUTIS

Ethan is one of the most inquisitive students that I have ever had the pleasure of teaching.  Ethan is not afraid to ask questions to learn more about whatever topic we are covering in Project Lead the Way.  It is very apparent that Ethan cares about learning.  He is a role model to other students.  I see this everyday in the classroom.  Ethan is a very concientious student that cares about his grades and works to his fullest potential.  For example, on one writing assignment Ethan went above and beyond the expectations of the assignment.  His reponse to the question of how to solve leaving "our carbon footprint" was outstanding.  What impressed me was that even when every other student was finished Ethan continued to write to make sure he had an "A" paper.  His response was way beyond an "A" paper.  I appreciate Ethan's attitude and the character that he exhibits each day.

I am so proud that he has received the honor of student of the month.  I congratulate him for being chosen as he well deserves it.

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY                               EMILY PIKE

Even though Emily happens to be a twin, she is truly one of a kind.   She is many things to those who know her - a student, a classmate, a sister, a daughter, and a friend to name a few.  It is no surprise that she excels in all of these roles.

When Emily’s classmates heard she had been chosen as the third grade Student of the Month, they couldn’t have agreed more.  They had all kinds of ideas why they felt Emily was very deserving of the award.  Some of the character traits that they mentioned again and again were her honesty, willingness to help others, and her politeness. Not only did they feel she is kindhearted and a good friend, but that she is a good sport and never gives up.  Emily is not afraid to think outside the box or to stand tall for what she believes.

As Emily’s teacher, I feel very privileged to have her in my classroom this year.  Emily is an excellent student and loves to learn.  She especially loves to read and challenges herself to choose a wide variety of books. Books about mummies and ancient Egypt are some of her favorite topics.   She always sets her standards high and then works hard to reach them. She rarely fails.

Emily enjoys spending time with her family and friends outside of school.  She has a twin brother Stephen, an older sister Kaitlin (who continues to be her role model), and two dogs.  She enjoys cheerleading and makes that a regular part of her recess each day. She also loves gymnastics and hunting with her dad.

Emily is a student who makes Helmwood Heights proud.  She is a great role model both at home and at school. I know she will continue to grow and excel in all areas and inspire those around her. After all, she is truly one of a kind.

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY                                    JONAH SHIRTS

All of my students (past and present) are special in some way, but every once in a while I get to work with a student who just stands out a little more than his peers.   Jonah is one of those students.  He stands out, not because he does anything on purpose to get my attention, he stands out just because of who he is.  I first met Jonah last year when he came up to third grade for math class.  Every day, like clockwork, at math time Jonah would be at the door, anxious to get started.  He wasn’t intimidated or overly concerned about working in a class a year ahead of his age group.  He would come into our classroom, find a seat, and wait patiently until the lesson started.  Jonah easily blended in with the other children, he participated and contributed in class with confidence.  He knew his math, and he didn’t mind showing it!  This year Jonah is a third grader and he goes to a fourth grade room for part of his math instruction.  I just received this comment from Mr. Thompson today.  Jonah has a 100% in Math.  He is an exceptional math student, very independent and does well with any challenge I give him.  His Unit #1 Common Assessment was a 100%.  He was the only student in his math class that scored a 100%.”

Jonah is an excellent student in other areas as well.  His reading range is 3.5-5.5 with 96% comprehension. He does beautifully in Science and Social Studies as well.

Jonah is a very well rounded young man, who comes to school prepared and ready to learn.  He has a good attitude and an even better work ethic. He is self motivated, responsible and dependable.  He doesn’t mind helping others or taking the lead role in group work if needed.  Jonah gets along well with all the other students.  At times his level of maturity catches me by surprise.  At recess not long ago he came to me and explained that the boys playing basketball were getting a little rough so he decided he was going to go find someone else to play with because he felt that there was soon going to be trouble on the basketball court and he didn’t want to be part of it!

I thoroughly enjoy having Jonah in our classroom.  I have no doubt that he’ll continue to excel throughout his school career.

PANTHER ACADEMY                                                Annelise Aldridge

Annelise Aldridge was nominated to be student of the month at Panther Academy because she is an excellent example of good character and super listening skills.  In her class, she is a friend to all. Annelise is a role model for others to observe in the room so they can see what they should be doing.

In addition to her exemplar responsibility , Annelise is a terrific illustrator.  She loves to draw and creator beautiful pictures!

Panther Place                                                            Trinity Withers

Trinity has attended Panther Place for four years.  She is a student at Helmwood, in the 4th grade and in Ms. Adams’ class.  Kathy Francis, Trinity’s teacher at Panther Place nominated her and writes,

“I would describe Trinity as “fun, loving” because she is always positive and fun to be around.  Trinity comes in each day with a smile on her face.   She is kind respectful to all her classmates and never participates in negative activity.  Trinity works diligently and neatly on her homework during homework hour at Panther Place.  She willingly brings her homework to be checked and her agenda signed each day.  PE with Mr. Donny Gill is one of her favorite activities.  She especially enjoys kickball and basketball.  Trinity chose to be in our Art Club this year and has proven to be very talented, producing some wonderful pieces of art.   I also appreciate Trinity’s willingness to help straighten up the room and clean up after activities without a fuss.  She is simply a joy.”

We have truly enjoyed Trinity over the years.  She has great character and leadership qualities and is very deserving of this honor.

V.B. Mathematics Education Service and Achievement Award Recepient Mrs. Mary Bell

VIII.H. Consideration of Approval of Creating a T.K. Stone Middle School Head Coaching Position and Corresponding Stipend for the Baseball Program
Rationale

Last year, the T.K. Stone SBDM approved the implementation of a middle school baseball program on a trial basis.  The Elizabethtown High School baseball program covered all costs associated with the program.  Based on feedback from the coaches and parents, the program was deemed a huge success.  Through the implementation of the middle school program, the amount of players that were involved in baseball in our school district increased substantially from 17 in 2009 to 27 in 2012.

The transportation, umpires, equipment, etc.  expenses will fall under the T.K. Stone Athletic umbrella.  Last season, the middle school parents worked the concession stand at the baseball games to help with fundraising to support the start-up of the middle school program.  Expenses could be altered by the number of home versus away games played.  Although, travel and umpire expenses are basically the same, home games would also bring in gate and concession revenue to assist in funding the program.

If the T.K. Stone Head Baseball Coaching Position is approved, we are asking for a $1,500.00 corresponding stipend.  This stipend is aligned with other relevant head coaching positionis at the middle school.

VIII.I. Consideration of Approval to Increase Days Worked for Talent Pool Resource Teacher from Two Days to Three Days per Week
Rationale

This recommendation is to increase the district's Talent Pool Resource Teacher/Mrs. Renee Lackey from two (2) to three (3) days per week.  As the Talent Pool Resource Teacher, Mrs. Lackey is responsible for delivering direct services to students in Grades K-3.  These services are in the form of pull-out classes that focus on critical creative thinking skills.

Mrs. Lackey currently delivers services one day a week at both Morningside and Helmwood Heights Elementary Schools.  A current need is to create additional time and services for the students and staff at the Panther Academy location, so that Mrs. Lackey can  provide pull-out services to Kingergarten students and assist teachers in planning appropriate instruction.  Currently, Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Lackey combine their services to meet the needs of approximately 500 of our students.  Time efficiency is of the utmost importance when serving such a large number of students with just two individuals and we know this change would produce less teacher travel between schools, translating to more time devoted to instruction.  By dividing services this would allow Mrs. Ryan to work only with the students and teachers in secondary grades and Mrs. Lackey in the elementary grades.

The EIS Gifted Education Program is one of the best in the state and it is important that we continue serving our students in a quality manner.  The cost of this additional one day a week would be approximately $5,000 through the end of the 2012-2013 school year.
