X.B. INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS
X.B.1. Project Lead the Way Presentation
Rationale

Ms. Dianne Leveridge, Director of Project Lead the Way Kentucky
College of Engineering
University of Kentucky
Ms. Leveridge will make a presentation to the board on Monday night explaining the impact Project Lead the Way would have on our school district.

Project Lead the Way is a middle school and high school project and problem based contextual learning curriculum.  Project Lead the Way seeks to create dynamic partnerships with schools and industry in order to prepare an increasing and more diverse group of students for success in engineering and engineering technology programs.  Students interested in math, science, and the human body will find the PLTW Biomedical Sciences program a great introduction to the numerous medical fields.  It will slao teach them how the skills they learn are used in the biomedical sciences.

The primary goad of PLTW is to grow the nation's technology workforce (engineers and technicians).  Currently, 1,300,000 engineering/engineering technology jobs are available in the  U.S. without trained people to fill them.  The PLTW curriculum provides the kind of student work that helps students reach higher standards in the academic core.

Our hopes are to get the Project Lead the Way program implemented at T.K. Stone for the 2012-2013 school year.  We will continue to pursue additional costs that relate to preparing the classrooms, such as computer hardware, electrical work, teacher training, and furniture.  As a reminder, Dow Corning has also committed $25,000 for this project.

The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Educationi created the Science, Technoloty, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Task Force, which developed a statewide P-20 strategic actioin plan to accelerate STEM education throughout the state.  Project Lead the Way is a component of the STEM initiaative.

Project Lead the Way will enhance the rigor of our mathematic and science programs and curriculum, enhance college and career readiness, and create partnerships with business, industry, and civic leaders to improve STEM education.  We would eventuallly like to implement a STEM program at the high school.  All of which are part of our strategic plan.
