The EHS student of the month for May is Alex Harris. Alex is a senior at EHS who is an amazing student athlete. Alex describes herself as hardworking, punctual and focused. Alex has been on the Swim Team for four years. She placed and medaled in the state competition with the relay team her junior year, placed top 8 in the regional swim meet her freshman and senior year, placed 2nd in the 50 Free, junior year and named an "All American Athlete." In addition to swimming, Alex has served four years on Beta Club, three years on Student Council, as Service Chair, and two years on the Track Team. Alex enjoys reading, drawing, spending time outside, running, and swimming. Alex also enjoys participating in Community Service. She loves working with others and observing the impact it has on individuals. She has volunteered at Warm Blessings, Feeding America and the Animal Refuge. After high school, Alex plans to attend Bellarmine University where she will major in Biology. She hopes to attend medical school to obtain a career in oncology or nutrition.

Here are some comments from her teachers and coaches:

Megan Zerhusen (Swim Coach) - "Alex is an amazing senior leader on the swim team. Her positive work ethic and attitude helped many on the team. She always worked hard, but had fun while working! The swim team would not have been as successful as it was this year without her leadership. Alex's efforts in the classroom did not go unnoticed. She has been awarded NISCA Academic All-American for the 2021-2022 school year. Congratulations Alex on being student of the month, you will achieve many great things in the years to come."

Mr. Hayes (Track Coach, AP Calculus)-"Alex is a wonderful student who works extremely hard in class. She always seems to have a smile on her face and such a positive attitude. It has been a true joy to get to teach her for the past two school years as well as the brief time I was able to be her coach in Track and Field. She would bring the same smile and infectiously positive attitude with her to practice. There is not a more deserving student for student of the month.

Mr. Ernst ( AP English Lit.)-"Alex is an outstanding student and an excellent young woman. She takes her learning very seriously, and is dedicated to doing her best in every area of her life. She reads both deeply and widely, and is willing to take intellectual risks that other students are not. Alex has a bright future ahead, and a lot to be proud of already!'

Mrs. Lively (AP Physics)-"Alex is a highly motivated and successful student. She is a quick learner, and grasps very difficult Science and Math concepts with ease. She is hard working and consistently goes above and beyond what is required of her. She is very involved in extracurricular activities and is a well-rounded student. It has been a pleasure to have Alex in class for the past two years."

Mr. Todd ( Personal Finance)-"Alex is a tremendous student and is well deserving of the student of the month honor. She is a pleasure to have in class. Although fairly quiet, she is willing to participate in class discussions and activities."

"Cannon is a wonderful student and friend in our classroom. He works very hard and always gives his best effort on everything he does. If he doesn't understand, he always asks questions to clarity. He always has a positive attitude and is one of the most respectful students I've had the pleasure of teaching! I am so lucky to have Cannon in my class this year and I am so proud of all he has accomplished!    Congratulations Cannon"--Mrs. Kersey

Cannon Grissom always comes to school willing and ready to learn. He sets an example to follow for all students at Helmwood. "I am so lucky to get to have him in class for the next few weeks"                          Mrs. Wallace

Cannon's second grade teacher, Mrs. Yates, had this to say about Cannon. "I was lucky enough to be Cannon's second grade teacher. Although most of it was online, I was really able to know Cannon. I was impressed with Cannon because he would set his alarm and get online without help. I think my favorite part was when he didn't have paper, he pulled out a McDonald's bag and did his math on that. He was so sweet interacting with peers and teachers. Cannon is very well deserving of this award."

When we participate in activities that require partners she is eager to work with anyone that she is partnered with and never complains. Gia always takes turne and shares.
