THE OCTOBER 19, 2020 REGULAR BOARD MEETING IS CALLED TO ORDER

Pursuant to EIS Board Policy 01.45 Board Meeting Agenda, as part of the official agenda for each regular board meeting, the Superintendent shall prepare a consent agenda of routine business items.  Prior to the approval of the agenda the members of the board may require to "pull" any item from the consent agenda and place the item on the action agenda for further discussion and review.

Elizabethtown High School  - Ryan Pyles

The EHS student of the month for October is Ryan Pyles.  Ryan is a senior at EHS who is a model student-athlete.  He is a four-year member of the Panther Football and Baseball teams, where he is currently serving as team captain of the football team.  In addition, he is a four-year member of the Pep Club and was just elected as President.  Some of Ryan’s other honors and awards include, participating in the American Private Enterprise Program and the Lincoln Trail Young Achievers program, and being named KHSAA Academic All-State all 4 years.  After high school, Ryan plans to attend a 4-year college and study either economics or sports management.      

Here are some comments from his teachers:

Coach Brown (PE Teacher and Football Coach):  Ryan Pyles is a model student-athlete that strives to be his best on and off of the field of competition.  He is a natural leader that leads by example and does whatever he can to help others along the way.  He is driven, self motivated and is well on his way to making a great life for himself as well as a positive impact on whoever he comes in contact with.  He's a great student, a great athlete, and most importantly, he's a great person.

Mrs. Wilson (Junior English Teacher):  Ryan Pyles is a great student-athlete.  He understands how to prioritize his time and gives his very best to each of his endeavors.  He took my AP class and was "fully present" every day in class.  He is charismatic and outgoing and strives to glean all that he can from each of his experiences.  Not only have I seen him work in an academic setting, but I have watched him perform on the athletic fields and lead the student-body at sporting events.  He represents the best that EHS has to offer.

Ms. Thompson (Senior English Teacher):  I have really enjoyed having Ryan in my dual credit English class this year. Ryan is respected by his peers and by teachers because of his kindness, intelligence, and strong work ethic. He regularly contributes to our class discussions; his contributions are always thoughtful and insightful. I always appreciate students like Ryan who work hard and enjoy learning. I am happy that EHS is recognizing him for this honor!

Coach Greenwell (Baseball Coach):  Ryan is a hardworking student-athlete with exceptional leadership qualities.  Not only does Ryan excel on the baseball field, but more importantly he excels in the classroom and he is a great role model for the younger student-athletes.

Mrs. Bell (Business Teacher):  Ryan Pyles is a great student. He is a smart, respectful, & hard working young man. I have the pleasure of teaching Ryan this year and I enjoy his demeanor & the humor he brings to the class. I hear other students talk about Ryan & they all speak about how he is a true friend. Ryan is very deserving of this recognition as student of the month!

Mr. Hinkle (US History Teacher):  Ryan is an outstanding young man who exhibits all the qualities that a Student of the Month should represent.  He is a model student who completes all his work at a high level.  He is thoughtful and goes out of his way to help others in class who are struggling with an assignment and volunteered to take and explain work to a student who was absent.  I’m sure the fact that she was a girl had absolutely nothing to do with it.  Ryan also has a great personality and is well-liked by others.  He is easy to talk to, takes things in stride, and most importantly smiles or laughs at most of my jokes.  He is humble and never talks about his accomplishments in football or awards in baseball unless I bring it up, and even then, acts like it’s not that big of a deal.  I can think of no one more deserving of this award than Ryan Pyles.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL – RINKA KANEKO

Rinka Kaneko is TK Stone’s October Student of the Month.  Rinka is a talented artist and enjoys drawing and painting in her spare time.  Her favorite class is art.  Teachers were more than happy to have the opportunity to commend Rinka.

Mrs. Conway 

Rinka Kaneko is an 8th Grade student at TK Stone Middle School. Her family arrived here in 2018, and Rinka immediately began working hard to achieve the same top grades that she earned back in Japan. Rinka loves music, reading, and dance. As a sixth grader, Rinka chose to play the trumpet in our band because her grandfather chose that instrument as well. She practices daily and is well on her way to becoming an accomplished musician. Rinka continued her dance education at the Dance Centre of Elizabethtown and has performed in many recitals and productions of the Nutcracker. TK Stone could not have selected a more exemplary and well rounded student than Rinka Kaneko.

Mr. Smith

Rinka is a very polite and hard-working student. I have seen considerable growth in her musicianship since 1 began as a teacher here at TK Stone. She always puts forth her best effort and does her best to overcome any obstacles that she may face.

Mr. Lynn

Rinka is the type of student who strives for success no matter what. She always perseveres through any adversity, and these traits are definitely what sets her apart from her peers. I truly look forward to the rest of the school year with Rinka in my class!

Mrs. Perry 

Rinka is an excellent student. I love the fact that she is inquisitive and will try to find answers on her own. If she runs into something she doesn't understand she is very respectful and will ask for help. I see Panther Pride in her work ethic and behavior in the classroom and in the halls. Rinka is a very conscientious student who is always very polite and respectful. She is a delight to have in class.

Mrs. Smith 

Rinka embodies all that it means to be an E-town panther. She always has a positive attitude about her classwork. She is a model student who always arrives to class on time, stays on task and works hard on every assignment. Rinka is very respectful to all of her peers and works well with everyone. She is a joy to have in class! I love that she is so dedicated to her studies! 

Mr. Shearer

Rinka is an extremely hard worker and very detailed student.  Which is extra extraordinary since she is still mastering the english language.  However, through the use of her electronic translator, she is able to ask extremely high level questions and performs in mathematics at an incredibly high level.  She is a pleasure to have in class and is very deserving of the student of the month.

Rinka is looking forward to attending EHS next fall. After high school, Rinka wants to attend college to major in pharmacy.  There’s no doubt that Rinka will be successful in the future - her hard work and tenacity will serve her well. Congratulations to Rinka, TK’s student of the month.

            HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – ISAIAH WATERS

It is with great pleasure that we present Mr. Iziah Waters as Helmwood Heights, October Student of the Month.

Right from the start, Iziah has proven he was the obvious choice for Helmwood’s Student of the Month.  Some of his very first words to Mrs. Whitlock this year, were that he was going to have a much better year in fifth grade than he did in fourth grade. Since Iziah has been in my classroom, he has been the epitome of an exemplary student.  “Iziah has always had a positive attitude and is a true leader” stated Mrs. Marsha Adams.

“During NTI in the spring Iziah became a role model and one of the hardest working students we had. He was very determined and conscientious about all work” added Mrs. Kendra Adams, Iziah’s 4^th grade teacher.

He is kind and helpful to all his classmates and is always the first to try and share.  He is extremely respectful to all of his teachers.  He continues to work hard on all of his schoolwork, which truly shows his character in this new and oftentimes confusing and frustrating school year.  It is obvious that he cares about his work.  I can always count on Iziah to make everyone laugh during lunchtime and recess.  Iziah always makes sure to share his writing with me and his thoughts always bring a smile to my face.  I am honored and thankful to have a student like Iziah as a leader in my classroom.  I can’t wait to see what his future as a Panther will bring. 

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – LOCHLAN BROWN

It is Morningside Elementary School’s honor to recognize Lochlan Brown as student of the month for October 2020.  Lochlan is a student in Mrs. Heather Smith’s second grade class.

Mrs. Smith, Lochlan’s homeroom teacher, says, “Lochlan is a hard worker and an awesome student.  He is a Panther Online Learning student and goes above and beyond daily to complete his work on time.  He displays great effort and a positive attitude.  He always joins our google meets eager to learn and work!  Lochlan follows our virtual expectations during every live lesson.  He is respectful to his peers and teachers, well behaved, and very well rounded. Lochlan is a positive role model for his peers.”

Mrs. Willett, Morningside’s art teacher, said, “I love teaching Lochlan. He is always eager to learn and excited to show what he knows! He has a kind heart toward his peers and is the type of student I wish I could clone.” 

Mrs. Shirts, second grade instructional assistant said, “Lochlan always has a positive attitude and works hard with every task he is given.  Whenever I see him he has a smile on his face.  He is very kind and a great friend to his classmates.  He is also an amazing artist and I love seeing his creations.”

Lochlan’s first grade teacher, Mrs. Riney said, “Lochlan was one of the very best first grade students I have taught.  He was always polite, well behaved and did his best work each and every day! It was a pleasure to see him grow so much as a writer and artist last year! I loved reading his writing and seeing his illustrations! Congratulations Lochlan!  You deserve to be student of the month!”

We feel that Lochlan is a very special boy and very deserving of this recognition. Congratulations, Lochlan, for representing Morningside Elementary as October Student of the Month!

PATHER ACADEMY – DUPREE STRANEY

Dupree Straney has been such a light during the new norm of hybrid teaching.  Everytime he walks into my classroom he comes in with a smile and is so excited to learn.  Not only does he say the guidelines for success every day, but he practices them as well.  He is respectful (to adults and students), responsible, cooperative, and a great problem solver.  That is why he received the Panther Cub Award in September for showing respect in our school.  He truly does use his good manners all the time and is a very polite student to everyone around him.

I can always count on Dupree to do his best.  There is nothing I can throw at him that he isn’t afraid to tackle.  His perseverance, determination and attention to detail is what makes him stand out.  I love his enthusiasm for school and for life in general.  As his teacher, I look forward to seeing him everyday and to see what he will surprise with me.  Dupree is always participating online and always finds a way to connect through our live meets.

It is very apparent that his parents have taken a vested interest in his education and his development as a responsible student and as a person.  I applaud their efforts in setting high expectations for him and helping him achieve them.  Dupree always goes above and beyond what is expected of him.  One of the things I love most about him is his excitement for learning.  His attitude is always positive and uplifting.  When I am having a bad day, I can look at Dupree’s smile and it reminds me why I do what I do….Mrs. Shilts

Annually, the Board of Education must officially authorize the Superintendent to file for Public Law 874 Impact Aid Funds.  Impact Aid provides funding for federally connected children, including those who have a parent on active duty in the uniformed services, live on or have apparent who works on federal property, or live in federally assisted low-rent housing.

Board Policy 98.1132 states:

Students who experience extreme health or economic hardship may apply for assistance with graduation requirements for hardship reasons.

Attached are letters and hardship graduation applications requesting approval for early graduation due to a hardship.
