IV.A. Students of the Month
Rationale

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                 KADE BAILEY

The EHS student of the month for September is Kade Bailey.  Kade is an outstanding student and person and he is very deserving to be named the first student of the month for Elizabethtown High School for the 2018-19 school year.   Kade is an exceptional student that always has a smile on his face, and he is a very compassionate student, such as when he went to Mr. Hanson wanting to make sure that a family he was concerned about had new clothes and materials for the new school year and was willing to make a donation to this family to help them out.

Kade has started varsity for the baseball team since his sophomore year, playing baseball for EHS since he was a freshman.  As well, he plays travel baseball for the Danville Mustangs.  During his senior year, Kade is part of the business education cooperative program and works daily at the county attorney’s office with the staff of Mrs. Oldham.  Outside of school, you can often find Kade at the Elizabethtown Animal Hospital helping with mowing and landscaping.

Several of Kade’s teachers had some comments about how great Kade is:

Mr. Yates, Kade’s US History and AP Government teacher,  stated:  “Kade is an exceptional young man with a good holistic all-around attitude and approach to class, sports, and, in general, school. I've had the pleasure of teaching Kade the past two years and he has been an immense joy to have in class. He thrives in a challenging academic environment and it's no surprise he is student of the month.”

Mrs. Dodson, Kade’s English teacher added:  “I appreciate Kade's subtle sense of humor and his respectful demeanor.  Because he knows how to balance his own endeavors with consideration for others he will go on to do amazing things with his life.”

Mrs. Deon who has Kade for his dual credit Intro to Computers course had this to say:  “Kade is an upstanding student that always shows respect to his peers and teachers - a role model for other students to follow.”

Mr. Pitts, Kade’s baseball coach, had these comments:  “Kade is an outstanding young man.  He represented the EHS baseball program with class both on and off the field for the past several seasons.  Kade works extremely hard both at baseball and academics.  He is a tremendous teammate who puts the team before his self.  Kade will be a great representative of this school and his community in all his post high school endeavors.”

Kade’s supervisor in the county attorney’s office had these comments on a recent evaluation:  “Kade is wonderful to work with.  He is always punctual and lets me know when he cannot be here.  Everyone here enjoys working with him and has commented on how he takes initiative and is always willing to learn!"  She goes on to say "If I could make an extra column for 6 pts, I would rate Kade the highest in all areas!  We love his attitude.  He is also very dependable!"

Congratulations Kade for being selected as the September Student of the month and thank you for all of your contributions as an Etown Panther.  You are a leader of the class of 2019 and Etown High School is truly honored to have you represent us.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                       OBADIAH SCROGGINS

Obadiah, Obe for short, is a terrific student.  He is on the Honor Roll, a member of Student council, KUNA, KYA, yearbook, and was instrumental in helping Mr. Moberly implement the TKS Safety Patrol.  Each morning, Obe can be seen walking the hallways with a smile on his face, helping students with lockers and assisting teachers and staff when needed.  Obe is very ambitious, this summer he attended the National Flight Academy in Pensacola, FL.  For one week, he participated in flight simulations and learned about aviation.  After graduation, he wants to be a pilot for Delta airlines.  During his free time, Obe enjoys playing video games and participating in community service projects like Feeding America.  He has been a Boy Scout for the past five years and will soon embark upon a community project that will promote him to Eagle Scout.

His teachers have this to say about him:

Toni Perry

Obe is such a model student!!!  He is at the door each morning to open the door for all the teachers.  I know I have benefited from his kindness.  It has been raining and I had my hands full with school supplies an umbrella, and coffee and there is Obe saving the day for me!!!  Obe is very gifted in technology.  He has come to the rescue many times for technical support and the learning was able to continue.  He is a great leader and his peers like him too.  If he sees a need around the school he just voices his opinion ask for support and lead on.  I see great things in the future of Obe.  I am so proud to have him as a student.

Jennifer Roe

Obe is always waiting by the 7th grade stairs in the morning to open the door for teachers, he always volunteers to help where he can (ex: he offered to help me move tables in my classroom and brought in a prop for me to use during a lesson – both without me ever asking).  I have never heard him speak unkindly to another student or to a teacher.  He is always willing to raise his hand in class and participate in the conversation.  Lastly, he is always smiling!

Gary Pearman

Obe from day one has been incredibly respectful and helpful in class.  When he greets and opens the doors for us teachers on many mornings, it makes those days start with a smile.  I couldn’t ask for a more respectful young man.  If he continues on the path he is going, out country will be blessed with his endeavors.

Obe has a terrific future in front of him and will be a real attribute to EHS next year.  It is a pleasure to recognize Obadiah Scroggins as our September 2018 TKS Student of the Month.

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY                      LEXI DAVIS

We have only been in school three weeks and already there is a student who stands out from the others, not just with following the Guidelines for Success, but with her overall character.  This person is Lexi Davis.

From the very first day of her 5th grade year, Lexi has been attentive, observant, filled with compassion for helping others and kind.  She listens to instructions and participates in class discussions and activities.  Lexi is aware of those around her and is quick to help someone who is struggling with anything.  Her compassion shines through when she is assisting students in the classroom with their organization, guiding them to do the right thing or explaining the directions to them.  While doing this, Lexi remains calm and considerate of every one.

Outside of school Lexi stays very involved with a variety of activities.  She is on the Flames travel soccer team defending the goal as the keeper and playing with grit on the field.  Lexi is actively involved in her church demonstrating quality leadership skills as the children’s worship team leader as a State Bible Drill Winner.  When she is not playing soccer or at church, she is active with the Panthers Little League Basketball and taking art lessons to advance her creativity.

As you can see, Lexi Davis is very worthy of being Helmwood’s Student of the Month.  Congratulations!

MORNINGSIDE ELEMNTARY                                     ASHLEAH SMITH

Morningside Elementary is proud to recognize Ashleah Smith as our September student of the month.  Ashleah is a fourth grader in Mrs. Billings’ homeroom.   Each of the reasons that her teachers gave for nominating her are examples of how she lives the Guidelines for Success each and every day. She is Respectful, Responsible and Cooperative.

Mrs. Billings’ shared that she deserves this award for being a leader in kindness and positive attitude!  She works hard on everything.  She is kind and goes the extra mile for every student in fourth grade.  She is a joy to be around all the time.  She is polite and respectful not only to all adults in the building but to everyone she meets.

Mrs. Paulsen, Ashleah’s reading teacher says, Ashleah is incredible at putting first things first!  As an active member of the Louisville Fire Junior soccer team, much of her time outside of MES is spent on the road and in Louisville practicing and playing. Despite this, she is always prepared for class and ready to give 110%. Never has she used her dedication to soccer as an excuse for not excelling in the classroom.

Mr. Knight, her PE teacher says, Ashleah is a terrific young lady who treats everyone in her class with respect. On the floor she plays to win but off the court she’s humble and caring.

Ashleah’s fourth Grade math teacher, Mrs. Ingram, shared that she is a shining star in and out of the classroom.  She is a hard worker who you can tell loves to learn.  She is a role model throughout the 4th grade.

Thank you Ashleah for being the kind of student that everyone can look up to and that your teachers can count on everyday no matter what!  We look forward to watching you grow and Be Your Best!

PANTHER ACADEMY                                     MARIA VISOS-SALINA

When Mrs. Kuhn mentioned it was time for a student to be nominated for Student of the Month, as wonderful as my class is, I didn’t hesitate to submit Maria’s name.  She was the first student to come to mind because she has LITERALLY BEEN LIKE ANOTHER TEACHER HELPER TO MYSELF AND Mrs. Miller from the first day of school.  She is such a mature, responsible, respectful child.  We never have to redirect her behavior.  Instead, she tries so hard to not only ser a good example by doing the “right thing” but if she sees another child struggling with behaviors, she will quietly another student a silent cue or signal or explain the expected behavior, without us having to ask her!  She just gets it!  She has also been a great help communicating with ESL students when I get stuck on translating or thinking quickly of what I’m trying to say in Spanish.  Maria exemplifies a student who has already learned so many of our character words that we teach at Panther Academy.  I have truly been blessed this year especially with Maria!

PANTHER PLACE                               CLAIRE BLESER

Claire Bleser is Panther Place’s September Student of the Month.  This is Claire’s first year to be enrolled in the Panther Place program.  She is proving to be a wonderful addition to our Panther Place family.  Her Panther Place teacher, Ms. Kaci Kays nominated her and had these words to say about Claire, “Claire has been an amazing asset in our 2nd grade classroom.  She is always taking initiative within the room, is polite to all her classmates and tries her hardest on all her work as well as our other activities.”  The teacher’s assistant told me that Claire is a very good student.  Claire told me herself that her favorite thing to do at Panther Place is homework.  She also loves art class and likes to draw a lot in her sketch books.

I asked her classmates to say a few words about Claire and they all agreed that she is very sweet and nice.  One student said, “She’s a good friend.”  Another said that she is very, very funny because she tells funny jokes.

When not in school or Panther Place, Claire likes playing with her sister and two brothers.  She also enjoys playing with her two cats.

Because she is kind and respectful and exhibits all the good Panther character qualities, I am happy to name Claire our student of the month for September.

V.C. Approve Appointee to the 2018-2019 District Evaluation Appeals Committee
Rationale

The state regulations on evaluation of certified personnel, KRS 156.557 and 704 KAR 3:345 require the local board of education to appoint its representative to the Local Evaluation Appeals Panel.

As part of our district's evaluation process, an Evaluation Appeals Panel is established each year.  This is an important element in the evaluation process; it ensures that our evaluation process and guidelines have been followed, and it provides a process to ascertain whether an employee has been fairly evaluated in his/her summative evaluation.

The Evaluation Appeals Panel is made of three members - all certified staff members.  Two members of the three-member team are elected by the certified staff members in the district.  The third member is appointed by the Board of Education.

The certified staff members have selected the following to serve on the panel for this school year:

  • Lori Larkin
  • Joanna Breunig
  • Alex Todd (Alternate)

Mr. Ballard would like to appoint Mr. Steve Smallwood, Assistant Superintendent for Student and Support Services, serve on the committee and Mrs. Kelli Bush, Assistant Superintendent for Student Instruction serve as the alternate.

V.D. Approve the Master Technology Plan
Rationale

Attached is the EIS Technology Plan for 2018-2019.  EIS is a high performing district with a history of excellence.  The district contains one high school, one middle school, two elementary schools, an alternative education center, a residential facility, and a Pre-K facility with a total district student population of approximately 2500 students.

The district has a Wide Area Network (WAN) that connects every building to each other and the Internet.  Each building has a Local Area Network.  The district has a computer hand phone in every classroom, with an overall ratio of one computer for every 1;1 students.  Nearly every district classroom is equipped with Intelligent Classroom technology.

The district's technology goals are focused on improving student learning and communicating with our parents and community.  This requires a robust network of voice and data assets that are modern and sustainable and includes items like email communication, current and informative web pages, parent portals, One-Call Now communication, Twitter feeds, Facebook, etc.

This year there will be a focus on improving the use of technology tools to improve classroom instruction.
