IV. RECOGNITION OF GUESTS AND SPECIAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
IV.A. Students of the Month
Rationale

Students of the Month

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL              DILLON SWANK

The EHS student of the month for May is Dillon Swank.  Dillon is a senior who has been an integral part of our very successful football program for the past four years.  During his junior year, Dillon was named All-Area Lineman of the Year, First Team Offensive & Defensive Line, and All-State Honorable Mention.  He continued to excel his senior year and was named to the First Team All Defense & Offensive Line and Second Team All State.  Dillon plans to continue his football career at Morehead State University and major in Criminal Justice.  Dillon will graduate career ready in two areas:  Construction Technology and Project Lead the Way Engineering.

Here are some comments from Dillons’ Teachers:

Mr. Yates (AP Government teacher):  “Dillon joined AP Government and Politics half way through the year and has been a pleasure to have in class thus far.  He is sharp, articulate, and adds a lot to the dynamics of the classroom and the social, political, and economical conversations we conduct.  He’s definitely good for two things in my classroom…the right answer and supporting me as a teacher.  Dillon is a terrific model of a student-athlete.”

Mrs. Dodson (Eng 4 & Fundamentals of Public Speaking teacher):  “Dillon is a charming, confident young man who never seems to meet a stranger.  His contagious sense of humor can get him in trouble at times, but it can get him out of trouble even more quickly.  Making eye-contact, varying inflection, speaking with confidence – speaking attributes that many struggle to maintain come very naturally to Dillon.  I enjoy having Dillon as a student and will miss him next year.  His outgoing  personality will enable him to achieve anything he sets his mind to.”

EHS is proud to recognize Dillon Swank as the May Student of the Month.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                       AIDEN SICKAFOOSE

Aiden Sickafoose is an outstanding and active student at T.K. Stone.  He participates as a percussionist in both the EHSW Marching Band and the Winter Ensemble.  Recently, he scored proficient at the Kentucky Music Educators 4th District Solo and Ensemble.  In addition he played football at T.K.S. this year and plays lacrosse on the Panther Club Lacrosse team.  I never see Aiden without a smile and a kind word for those around him.

Aiden’s teachers all commented on Aiden’s pleasant and polite demeanor.  Ms. Coogle says that Aiden is a wonderful student to have in math class.  He works hard and is one of the most polite and thoughtful students that I have.  He is always being kind and helpful.  Aiden is a great student and a pleasure to have in class!  Ms. Perry says that “Aiden is such a pleasant young man.  Each day he comes in with a smile and greets me which really sets the tone for the day.  He gets along well with his peers and he is a pleasure to teach.  He is so deserving of this award.”

Aiden has Ms. Steffy for History and Appreciation of the Arts and she claims that “Aiden is an extremely polite, sweet boy.  He is always cheerful and encouraging-quite unusual for a middle school student!  He always brings a smile to my face with his positive attitude.  Aiden is an accomplished percussionist in the TKS band and he enjoys and participates in sports as well.”  Mr. Pearman claims that “Aiden Sickafoose is one of the most respectful students I’ve had this year.  His positive attitude helps create an awesome classroom environment.  If all students were like Aiden, our world would approach perfection.”

For these reasons, we are proud to name Aiden Sickafoose as the May, 2017, T.K. Stone Student of the Month.

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY         ABI STEARMAN

Have you ever met a young lady that has a gentle and quiet spirit, yet when she is absent from the room, you miss her presence?  Allow me to introduce you to Ms. Abi Stearman.  Abi is a 5th grade student at Helmwood Heights Elementary.

Abi is a soft spoken role model in the 5th grade.  Abi puts forth her best effort on all of her work.  She is kind and helpful to those that are seated near her.  She shows responsibility by having her work and supplies ready for class each day.  Her classmate, Camryn, said, “Abi is an awesome role model for young and old.”  Abi is the kind of student each teacher dreams of having in class.

Abi’s classmates say she is a true friend.  “Abi is always there to comfort others when they are down,” said Chloe.  “She always puts others before herself and tries to cheer you up when you are down,” added Nadia.  “She is a great friend and REALLY deserves this award,”  said Gabrielle.  As you can see, Abi is well liked and respected by her classmates.

Abi definitely deserves the honor of being Helmwood Heights Student of the Month!

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY                     LOREN MACY

It is our honor to recognize Loren Macy as Morningside’s May Student of the Moth.  From the time Loren walked into our classroom in August, she has confidently and successfully improved and excelled in academics and citizenship.

Loren is a thinker and a hard worker.  She consistently makes above grade level scores in all content areas.  We are very proud of the way she takes time to check over her own work before turning it in to the task basket.  When working through challenging tasks she sets a wonderful example of perseverance and refuses to give up until she has mastered the skill.  She is an inspiration to our motto Effort=Achievement.  Early in the school year Loren set her sights on joining Mrs. Lackey’s Talent Pool group, so she worked diligently to increase her scores and demonstrate her thinking in order to be nominated.  It gives us great pleasure to say that Loren accomplished that goal and joined the group this quarter.

Perhaps the think we all love most about Loren is her love of learning.  She is always ready to take on a new challenge, a leadership role, or to share her thinking with her friends.  The excitement in her eyes sets the tone for the eagerness she exudes.  This love of learning spreads over into her relationship with others.  Although Loren has a solid circle of close friends, she is a friend to all.  She includes anyone and everyone who wants to learn along with her.  Loren respects others’ thinking and beliefs even if they are in contrast with her own.  An example of this is her dedication to the U of L college team.  Although she is a diehard Cardinals fan she “respectfully disagrees” with anyone who says they are not one of the elite teams in our state.  The recent presidential election was another opportunity for Loren to voice her strong opinion about the candidates with grace.  At such a young age Loren has learned the art of resolving conflicts “Bugs and Wishes” style.  A skill that will take her far in this world!

Outside the classroom setting Loren is involved in sports and her church.   She is already preparing herself to become a productive member of our community.  We are so excited to look ahead a few years and see what Loren will accomplish.  She is a student that naturally represents the MES Guidelines for Success…She is respectful toward adults and of school property at all times, responsible for her own learning and actions, and intentionally cooperative with others.  Loren is mindful each and every day that an Elizabethtown Panther is always at her best!

We will always remember the smiling face of Loren Macy.  She is the type of student every teacher hopes to have the privilege of teaching.

Mrs. Roseann Thrush, Teacher

PANTHER ACADEMY                                  MELAINA HAYDEN

It has been an absolute pleasure getting to be Melaina’s teacher!  Melaina is a student who perseveres and always gives her best at anything we are working on.  Something might be difficult but she NEVER gives up.  Lately she has been blowing my socks off with some higher level skills like alphabetizing her spelling words without any help!

I can always ALWAYS count-on Melaina 100% of the time to always do the right thing.  I love catching my students being good and she is one that never lets me down.  She wants to please us and I think she is pretty proud of herself as she is recognized often for making such good choices!

She is always willing to help others in any given situation.  She has such a big heart and love for life!  I will miss Melaina’s smile and spirit so much next year!  I thank her parents so much for sharing this sweet child with us this year!  Way to go Melaina!  I’m so proud of you.                   Jill Valentine

VALLEY VIEW EDUCATION CENTER          KELSEY DREW

We are excited to Have Kelsey Drew as Valley View’s Student of the Month for May.  Kelsey is an extremely hard worker and respectful young lady that has made incredible progress this year.  She applied to our Extended Learning program in September and upon acceptance she has hit the ground running.  Kelsey started out as a sophomore, with 7 credits.  Since being at Valley View she has earned 11 credits, needing only 4 more to graduate.  Kelsey is one of the most self-motivated and dedicated students I have had the pleasure of working with.  Mr. Pennington, her teacher, says this about Kelsey, “She has been working feverishly at home on weekends and nights trying to catch up.  She works several days a week and is still able to find time to work on her classes.  A couple of months ago she asked it it would be alright to work on APEX during the summer.  Music to our ears!  I fully expect her to complete her coursework by summer’s end.”  Kelsey, we are so proud of how far you’ve come this year.  This program was designed for students like you, and we are thrilled to celebrate your success!

VI. ACTION ITEMS
VI.A. Approve Community Eligible Provision (CEP) Summer Feeding Program at Helmwood Heights Elementary, Morningside Elementary School, T.K. Stone Middle School, Valley View Education Center and Panther Academy
Rationale

Attached is a letter from Mike Sallee, Nutrition Services Coordinator requesting approval to take Helmwood Heights Elementary, Morningside Elementary, T.K. Stone Middle School, the Valley View Education Center and Panther Academy to Community Eligible Provision (CEP).

The USDA allows schools that meet a 40% threshold of Direct Certified students, (SNAP, MEDICAID,  HOMELESS, and FOSTER.) to offer those students at these schools breakfast and lunch at no charge.  Those numbers are reported to the state on April 1st and used to determine what schools can participate in CEP the following year.   HHES, MES, TKS, VVEC and Panther Academy do qualify and and if we have the normal increase in participation that other districts have had their percentage is high enough to not result in a loss of revenue for Nutrition Services.

Also, we will again participate in the Summer Feeding Program this year.  The location will be at Morningside Elementary.  Last year over 7500 lunches to students in this area were served.  We anticipate doubling that number this year.
