IV. RECOGNITION OF GUESTS
IV.A. Students of the Month
Rationale

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL       JOHN PAGE

The EHS Student of the Month for November is John Page.  John is a senior who has been involved in a wide variety of activities.  He has been a Boy Scout since 6th grade, earning Eagle Scout status in February 2015.  At EHS John has been a member of the band, the bowling team and the cross country team, where he serves as captain this season.  He has held various jobs in our community and has volunteered with several organizations.  After graduation, John plans to enlist with the Air Force.

Here are some comments from John’s teachers:

Mrs. Herringshaw (college algebra teacher):  “John is an excellent student.  He always completes his work on time.  HE seeks help when he needs it and is very responsible (always letting me know when he will not be in class).  He is a leader in and out of the classroom, always showing compassion to others!”

Mrs. Thompson (Eng 101 teacher):  “John is first and foremost a kind person.  I can see the reflections of a good family in his personality and demeanor.  In class, I appreciate his willingness to take risks in his writing.”

Mrs. Dodson (Communication teacher):  “John is a kind young man with a wonderful, understated sense of humor.  Recently, we discovered that he is also the king of deciphering puns.  I am looking forward to witnessing his continued development as a successful communicator.”

Mrs. Pennington (Business Management and Coop teacher):  “I have John in Business Management and as a Co-op student at Lewis and Preston Law Firm in Elizabethtown.  As a student in Business Management, John is very quiet, but attentive and contributes thoughtful answers when called on during class discussions.  He always does a great job on any work her does for me.  On the job, his supervisors are pleased with his work ethic and willingness to do the work they are asking of him.  They trust him to do his job correctly, but ask questions when needed.”

EHS is proud to recognize John Page as the November Student of the Month

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL             AUDRIANNA COLEMAN

Audrianna is experiencing her first year as a member of the EHS Marching Band and when asked about this, she lights up and exclaims, “I love it.  Band is a very big part of who I am.”  Mrs. Evans sayd, “Audrianna Coleman is an exceptional young lady.  Not only is Audrianna a member of the EHS Marching Band, she is also the first chair clarinet in the T.K. Stone Symphonic Band.  As her band director, I have seen many examples of her talent and have been impressed by her diligence and work ethic.  Audrianna always maintains a refreshingly positive attitude and is a great help to her peers.  It is pretty rare to see such a young student with the talent and ambition to know what they want to achieve and the direction and purpose they need to achieve it. I’m very much looking forward to watching Audrianna continues to improve and grow as a musician and student.”

Joanna Breunig, our Gifted and Talented Coordinator, adds, “Audrianna has impressed me with her work ethic and her communication skills.  I’ve collaborated with two of her teachers this year and I’ve witnessed her working in various group situations. Though many students around her fit into a certain group of friends that Audrianna does not generally hang around, she has gained the confidence to share her ideas and to speak her mind, even when her thoughts might not align with those of the group – and this skill is difficult for many 8th graders.  In both Global Citizenship and Pre-AP English class, I have heard Audrianna respectfully and politely lay out her thoughts in an intelligent, thoughtful manner, giving the group members insight into a different perspective that they otherwise would not have known.  Overall, Audrianna’s level of respect, hard work, and polite demeanor make her an excellent candidate for students of the month.  Heather Coogle also praised Audrianna as a hard working student.  “Se likes to learn and works hard to make sure she understands the material.  She is dependable and respectful.”  Derek Pfeiffer adds “It has been great seeing Audrianna blossom into a leader over the past two years.  She is very respectful and really cares about the quality of her work.  Audrainna leads by example in the classroom, and consistently sets high expectations for herself.  She is well respected by her peers, and contributes unique ideas to classroom discussions.”

Kerrie Bal, who has known Audrianna for her entire time at T.K., says “I am thrilled to share how incredible I find Audrianna Coleman.  I have had her as a student for three years.  Each year, she has impressed me with her growth as a student and a person.  I have seen Audrianna blossom from a more reserved student to one who is willing to stand up and share her thoughts and beliefs.  Audrianna is the true sense of a leader.  She doesn’t shout from the mountain tops, but she leads by example.  She gives her absolute best on any and all tasks, is willing to work with any person in the class, and she is never afraid to ask a question when she needs more help.  Audrainna is a student all teachers wish they had—a student who truly cares about not only her scores, but about her LEARNING.  I am unbelievably proud of Audrianna, and I can’t wait to see all she accomplishes in the future, as I know she is bound to be great!”

Recently, when talking with Audrianna she expressed to me how important her teachers have been to her and said “Without them, I would not be half the student I am.”  Audrainna’s teachers obviously share the same level of admiration for her abilities, so we present to you:

Audrianna Coleman, the T.K. Stone November Student of the Month!

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY              HADLEY PAULSEN

It is with great pleasure that I have nominated Hadley Paulsen as Morningside’s second grade student of the month.  Hadley is new to our school from Helmwood Heights Elementary School.  Hadley not only has positive study habits and is a role model for our classroom she also is active in extracurricular activities.

Hadley is currently taking tap and ballet at The Dance Centre.  She has taken lessons for 3 ½ years.  She will appear as a mouse and gumdrop in this year’s Nutcracker performance.  Hadley was a toy soldier in the Missoula Children’s Theater production of Pinocchio.

Hadley has played youth soccer for four years.  She is currently playing for Spain on the EYSA U8 team.

When Hadley is not on stage or on the field; she enjoys reading.  Hadley is an avid reader and is making great gains as a reader this school year already!

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY             PHOENIX BELL

Phoenix is an exemplary student.  She always follows our guidelines for success and helps remind her classmates to do the same.  Phoenix’s peers look up to her as a leader in our class.  She helps other students realize their potential and works hard each day to become a better reader herself.

Phoenix is resilient.  When a task is difficult she does not give up.  She perseveres and solves it.  She does not become frustrated, she becomes more determined to obtain success!

Phoenix has excellent manners and has helped others in our class to use their manners each and every day.  She is a pleasure to teach and a joy to be around!  Phoenix is one of those students that make you want to come to school each day.  She makes everyone’s day better and our classroom is a brighter, happier place having her in it!

PANTHER ACADEMY                MACY MABE

Macy Mabe was chosen for student of the month based on her leadership skills and also her ability to communicate with others.  When entering the classroom every morning she also has a great attitude and is eager to learn.  Her leadership skills are shown through her willingness to want to lead our small independent group time and also volunteering to lead during literacy.  One example I remember in particular, was when she told me that she wanted to be a teacher when she grew up.  Macy enjoys helping other classmates whenever she sees they are struggling.  Her ability to communicate with other students also comes natural.  She always lets others know that she’s available to help if necessary.  Not only is she willing to communicate with her friends, but also solves problems using her words.  She is a very kind and nurturing person.  Seeing Macy’s bright smile every morning, reminds me of why I wanted to become a teacher.  I cannot wait to see where the rest of this year will take us.

PANTHER PLACE                     GAVIN MILLER

Gavin began coming to Panther Place as a first grader.  He is now a second grader in Ms. Gardner’s class at Helmwood Heights Elementary.  At first, Gavin was quiet and reserved but, now he is more outgoing.  Here are some comments from his Panther Place teacher, Mrs. Peeler.  “I have observed how smart and creative Gavin is.  He loves math so much that it is common to see him sitting alone at a table working through math facts until he has filled a paper front and back with math problems.  Gavin is also a creative builder.  He enjoys building detailed Lego structures.  The best quality about Gavin is his sweet caring heart.  Every day, he demonstrates the true heart of being a good friend and student.  As his Panther Place teacher, I try my best to reciprocate that same compassion to him especially when he may need a little boost of confidence to help him take on a new challenge.  I look forward to watching him grow and expand his love for learning and life.”

Gavin is a model student, always following the rules and being respectful to staff and fellow classmates.  We are proud to name Gavin as Panther Place’s November student of the month.

The Band Boosters will actually finance the $1600 (plus benefits) needed to support the employment of the person selected for this position.  However, the payment to the employee would come through the Board of Education, and the person selected for the position would be an employee of the district.

A posting to attract and employ a full-time certified teacher for a new class of preschool students at Panther Academy was placed on the Kentucky Employment Placement Services (KEPS), on the district's application software (TalentED), and on Vacancy Announcements throughout the district in October 2016.  With board approval, the district would like to employ a candidate who holds certification for Elementary Education (P-5) as the preschool teacher on an emergency certificate until the close of the 2016-2017 school year.

Ms. Cora Wood, Director or Personnel is requesting that the Board of Education approve this request for Emergency Certification of an Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education Teacher.
