V. RECOGNITION OF GUESTS AND OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
V.A. Students of the Month
Rationale

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                                              TYLER GATTIS

The EHS student of the month for April is Mr. Tyler Gattis.  Tyler is an outstanding student that truly demonstrates the Panther spirit at Elizabethtown High School.  At EHS, Tyler has been the manager of the Girls Basketball Team, starting his sophomore year.   He has also been a member of the Pep Club and Friends of Rachel. Outside of school, Tyler spends a majority of his time volunteering for his youth group at Elizabethtown Church of Christ.

Coach Mudd had these comments to share about Tyler:   “Tyler has been a huge asset to my program.  Tyler was a student manager for the past three years and has done a great job.  Tyler is very dependable and reliable to do whatever was asked of him. I consider Tyler a great friend and he will be missed!”

Tyler also has spent time this year as a peer tutor for Mrs. Montgomery’s Survey of Social Studies Class.   She had this to say:  “As a peer tutor,  he is very helpful.   This week  his role was as a consumer & he took it very seriously.   He wouldn't purchase any product that was inferior. The freshmen learned quickly that they had to produce better products, if they wanted Tyler to purchase them.”

Mrs. Dodson and Mrs. Butkovich had these comments:  “We've enjoyed Tyler's sense of humor and his willingness to work hard in English. Classmates also enjoy Tyler's bright, jovial spirit.  Tyler will continue to be a blessing to many in all of life's endeavors.”

And finally, anyone that knows Tyler well, knows that Tyler is a Tennessee Volunteer superfan.   And Mr. Hayes was sure to make note of this:  “Tyler is a tremendous joy to have in class. He always works hard to achieve his very best. Tyler has a fantastic attitude, always willing to help others and absolutely loves Etown. But most importantly he is always willing to make sure I know that Tennessee won whatever game they played. Especially when they beat UK. I am very proud of Tyler for his hard work and everything he has achieved this year.”

Congratulations Tyler for being selected as the April Student of the month and thank you for all of your contributions as an Etown Panther.  Etown High School is truly honored to have you represent us.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                                       ALEENA SAIFULLAH

Aleena is a conscientious student who puts forth her best effort in everything she does.  She consistently shows respect to adults and her peers.  Her teachers say her maturity and positive attitude is quite evident in and out of the classroom.  Mr. Pearman claims, “If she continues at her current pace, Aleena will make outstanding contributions to our society’s future.”  Mrs. Steffy also characterizes Aleena as a bright, conscientious student.  “She always has a positive attitude and a beautiful smile.  Aleena works very hard to keep her grades where she wants them to be.  She is the stage manager for the TKS play this year and was chosen as such because of her attitude and work ethic.  Aleena is always very respectful to adults and her fellow students as well.  All in all, she is a model student!”  Ms. Lunsford says, “Aleena goes the extra mile in all her work.  It’s obvious that she is working at home, because she will often have a question for me at the beginning of the next class period.  Aleena is very respectful and a good role model in class for her peers.  She is such a pleasure to have in class.”

Aleena likes to spend time with her family and friends when she is not working on her school work.  She likes to bake and cook with her mom and spends time watching Netflix, having movie night, or bowling on the weekends.  Aleena enjoys going snow skiing with her family for “mini-vacations” at Perfect North and shopping with friends when she gets the chance.  She really enjoys an active and rich social life!

Aleena is a pleasure to be around and smiles easily.  In addition to her warm personality, she is an outstanding student and role model for others; therefore, it is an honor to name Aleena Saifullah as the February 2016, TK Stone Student of the Month.

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY                      JONATHAN DeLaFUENTE

We are so proud to have Jonathan represent Helmwood as our Student of the Month.  Jonathan is a leader by example in our classroom in so many ways.  He doesn’t have to use words to model excellent character.  His actions speak for themselves.

This year, Jonathan has grown so much academically.  He has worked very hard and has grown many levels in math and reading.  He has also made the All-A Honor Roll!  This is a reflection of his hard work and dedication every day in the classroom and at home.

He shows responsibility by always completing his work with quality and making sure he asks questions if he needs help.  He strives for perfection in all classes and his school work shows it!

Here are a few quotes from his classmates about why they think Jonathan deserves this honor:

Brooklyn Cann- “Jonathan is a good role model because he is nice to everyone.”

Evan Shelton- “He is the perfect friend, kind and loving.  He is a great influence on other kids in our class.”

Seth Moore- “Jonathan deserves this award because he is the nicest person you will ever meet. He follows directions when asked and always does his homework.”

Elijah Stearman- “He is hard-working and always wants to help.”

Daylin Flowers- “He follows the Guidelines for Success, he is honest and a good friend.”

Camden Rich- “He pushes himself to learn more.”

Drew Carmon- “He shows compassion to people when they are hurting.”

Hannah Gray- “Jonathan is very kind.  His getting this award is not a surprise!”

As you can see, Jonathan is a shining example of a good citizen, friend, and student.  Congratulations, Jonathan!!!

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY                                     LIZ HANSON

Ms. Line wrote this about Liz.  It is my honor to nominate Liz Hanson as Morningside Elementary School’s April Student of the Month.  Liz is a fifth grade student in Mrs. Line’s homeroom class, but is well-loved and admired by all of her fifth grade teachers.  According to Ms. Rowland, Liz constantly strives to persevere and do her best in class.  She always wants to know how she can do better.  According to Mrs. Key, Liz is an excellent reader who shows hard work and determination daily.  In Mrs. Oldham’s classroom, Liz is always respectful, and eager to help her classmates in any way.  According to Mrs. Line, Liz is a leader in the classroom.  She is always following the Guidelines for Success and encourages her peers to do the same.  Liz has shown amazing growth as a writer this year because she listens and applies techniques learned in class to her writing.  Liz qualified to be accelerated for math classes and attends 6th grade math at T.K. Stone.  Her teacher, Mrs. Atcher, says that Liz is a hard worker and is always willing to try something new.  Liz is not afraid to make a mistake because she knows that making a mistake is a part of learning.

As you can tell, Liz stands out in the eyes of her teachers.  She has a positive attitude that is contagious to others.  She is always kind to her peers and always shows respect to her teachers and other adults in the building.  Liz has a kind heart, an eagerness to learn, and the persistence to always produce her best work.  The future is bright for Liz, and I am excited to see how much she will achieve in her time as a Panther.

PANTHER ACADEMY                                      XIMI WILLOUGHBY

Ximi is a top-notched Kindergarten student.   Not only does she recite the guidelines for success every day but she practices them as well.  I have never met a student like Ximi.  She is so determined in everything she does.  There is nothing I can throw at her that she won’t stop until it’s done!  I love her “never-give-up” attitude.  It’s this attitude that makes Ximi stick out in my classroom.  Even though Ximi has obstacles that may stand in her way of learning… she never lets that stop her.  You see, Ximi has an eye condition which doesn’t allow her to see clearly beyond 6 or 7 feet.  She also has zero peripheral vision.  Therefore, Ximi has to be close to instruction and classroom resources at all times.  That means I get to have her close to me at all times, what a blessing for me!! Ximi is a wonderful problem solver!!  She knows what she needs to do if things are not working the way they should to help her get what she needs out of a lesson.  She moves closer to the smartboard, or she will get her magnifier or just simply raise her hand for assistance.  I love that about Ximi.  I don’t see her as a child with a disability, I see her as a child who just learns in a different way.  Because when it comes down to it, we ALL learn things differently!!   The students LOVE being around her because her free spirit is sooooo contagious.  They even fight to sit by her at lunch.  That speaks volume for the kind of student Ximi is.  My heart just melts when I think of the opportunity the Willoughy’s have given this sweet girl.  She loves her “mama” and “baba”, which is Chinese for mom and dad. Ximi was adopted and moved to the United States at the age of 5.   She has gone through many transitions to get to where she is.  I think of her as a caterpillar that has blossomed into a beautiful butterfly.  She is like a sponge in the classroom.  She is always so attentive just soaking everything in.  Her comprehension skills just amaze me.  I read a story about how leaves change color, and when I asked the class who could tell me the process of how leaves change color Ximi’s hand went flying up in the air and she NAILED the answer.  I sat there with my mouth opened wide.  I knew then that anything I said this girl was going to remember..  She also loves to dance and sing.  One thing that sticks out the most to me about Ximi is her joyful spirit.  She always has a smile on her face and a laugh that just makes you want to squeeze her.  I am very proud and honored that Virgil and Cindy have entrusted us as a district and me as her teacher to continue her education !

PANTHER PLACE                                               BRITNEY GOINS

Britney comes to Panther Place from Helmwood Heights Elementary where she is in Ms. Cann’s fifth grade class.  Her Panther Place teacher shared that Britney is always respectful, follows instructions, always stays on task and gets along with all of her classmates.  Our fifth grade teacher’s assistant shared that Britney is polite and never talks back which she said is a huge statement for that class!  Her classmates told me that Britney is nice and never has a bad attitude.  She doesn’t complain about the activities, and she shows good sportsmanship.  They also shared that she likes to help others whenever she is able to.  Naomi, her “Big Sister” from the Big Sisters/Big Brothers organization, said that she is thankful to have a ‘little’ as wonderful and fun loving as Britney.  She is always willing to help those around her and loves learning.  Britney excels in social studies and math.  She is always eager to play board games when I come and is subsequently great at strategizing.  Her remarks are always very insightful and encouraging.  Britney is a bright, funny and intelligent girl.  So; we all agree that Britney is very well deserving of being named Panther Place Student of the month for April.

VI.D. Approve Request to Form a VEX Robotics Club at T.K. Stone Middle School
Rationale

the T.K. Stone Middle School SBDM approved a request by Ms. Missy Mills, PLTW Teacher and Ms. Jennifer Burnham, Principal at T.K. Stone Middle School to form a Vex Robotics Club to replace the LEGO Robotics club.

In the VEX Competitions, presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams from around the world in a game-based engineering challenge.  Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test on the playing field as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more.  Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels; local champions go on to compete against the best in the world at VEX Worlds each April.  Hardin County has become a leader in the Vex robotics competitions.  EHS has started competing and I believe TK Stone needs to follow suit.  Vex has become so popular that every middle school in Hardin County has a team and they have been doing very well in the state competitions.

If approved, this will replace LEGO Club.

VI.E. Approve Job Descriptions and Corresponding Salaries
VI.E.1. Approve Job Description for Substitute Bus Driver
Rationale

Ms. Cora Wood, Director of Personnel is requesting approval for a Job Description for Substitute Bus Drivers.

Our district has employed substitute bus drivers for many years.  However, there is no specific job description for this position and, and we do have a specific job description for other substitute positions in our district.

A proposed job description for the position is attached for your review.  Elements of it were taken from the current EIS job description for bus drivers as well as the Kentucky job description for bus driver.

Your approval of this recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

VI.E.2. Approve Recommendation to Institute Substitute Custodians (Approve Job Description and Pay Rate)
Rationale

Below is a recommendation to hire Substitute Custodian, job description and rate of pay from Ms. Cora Wood, Director of Personnel.

From time to time, it’s necessary to employ a substitute for a custodian.  When a custodian is absent for one day or so, we try to cover the loss by altering cleaning schedules and assignments for other custodians.  However, there are some situations and circumstances when this just isn’t the answer needed by the school or district.  (Example: A custodian is away on long-term medical leave, and the district needs a substitute custodian to replace the regular custodian.)  We have called agencies that specialize in temp hires to assist us in filling these needs, but it would be ideal to have a few people trained to work specifically for our district in these situations.

I would like to recommend that our district begin employing substitute custodians to assist regular custodial teams when one member is unable to work for an extended period of time.  Sometimes it’s not even a one-time long-term absence, but the frequent absent of a custodian due to an ongoing health condition.

If you approve, these employees would be selected through a process similar to that for other substitute workers in our district.  Their pay would be set at the hourly rate of a custodian with zero years of experience (presently $10.65 per hour).

The superintendent would determine when the absence of a custodian has created a hardship on the school.  Principals would contact the superintendent to request substitute coverage and approval to hire a substitute.  Because district funding is used to finance the employment of a classified substitute, it should require superintendent approval.

A proposed job description for the position is attached for your review.  Elements of it were taken from the current EIS job description for custodians as well as the Kentucky job description for a custodian.

Your approval of this recommendation would be greatly appreciated.
