IV. RECOGNITION OF GUESTS AND SPECIAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
IV.A. Students of the Month
Rationale

FEBRUARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                   JACK WILSON

The EHS student of the month for February is Jack Wilson.  Jack is a conscientious, hardworking student – a natural born leader in and out of the classroom.  He has been an instrumental player on the EHS baseball and football teams, helping the Panther baseball team win two region championships and leading the EHS football team to an undefeated season and a region championship this past fall.  Because of his high school success on the baseball field, Jack will continue to play baseball at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina.  In addition to his excellence on the field, Jack is also an outstanding student.  He has earned athletic academic all-state for two years and has been on the A/B honor roll for the past three years.  This year, is participating in the SEEK program at ECTC, meaning that he is a full-time college student studying in the Carpentry field.  He took 13 hours last semester and carried a 3.5 GPA and this semester is taking another 13 hours.  He is also currently employed at Tender Touch Senior Living Services.

Here are some comments from Jack’s teachers:

Coach Pitts: “Jack has been a vital member of our baseball program since he was in middle school.  Besides his skill on the diamond (which has led to him continuing his playing career at the D1 level at Coastal Carolina), he is a good teammate who is thought of highly by his teammates and coaches.  Jack also excels academically in the SEEK program.”

Mr. Hinkle:  “Jack is a model student.  He works hard, is focused in class, and is always respectful.  He has an easygoing personality and a famous ancestor – Wovoka – a Paiute Indian who originated the Ghost Dance and was known far and wide as “Jack Wilson”.”

Mr. Todd:  “Jack is a well-grounded student/athlete.  He has an engaging personality in the classroom and on the athletic field.”

Mr. Line:  “Jack is a quiet leader in the classroom who is respectful and works hard.  He is a young man of high character and a model student.”

Coach Brown:  “Jack is a leader through actions on and off the field, calm in the face of adversity.”

EHS is proud to recognize Jack Wilson as the February Student of the Month.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                           ALEENA SAIFULLAH

Aleena is a conscientious student who puts forth her best effort in everything she does.  She consistently shows respect to adults and her peers.  Her teachers say her maturity and positive attitude is quite evident in and out of the classroom.  Mr. Pearman claims, “If she continues at her current pace, Aleena will make outstanding contributions to our society’s future.”  Mrs. Steffy also characterizes Aleena as a bright, conscientious student.  “She always has a positive attitude and a beautiful smile.  Aleena works very hard to keep her grades where she wants them to be.  She is the stage manager for the TKS play this year and was chosen as such because of her attitude and work ethic.  Aleena is always very respectful to adults and her fellow students as well.  All in all, she is a model student!”  Ms. Lunsford says, “Aleena goes the extra mile in all her work.  It’s obvious that she is working at home, because she will often have a question for me at the beginning of the next class period.  Aleena is very respectful and a good role model in class for her peers.  She is such a pleasure to have in class.”

Aleena likes to spend time with her family and friends when she is not working on her school work.  She likes to bake and cook with her mom and spends time watching Netflix, having movie night, or bowling on the weekends.  Aleena enjoys going snow skiing with her family for “mini-vacations” at Perfect North and shopping with friends when she gets the chance.  She really enjoys an active and rich social life!

Aleena is a pleasure to be around and smiles easily.  In addition to her warm personality, she is an outstanding student and role model for others; therefore, it is an honor to name Aleena Saifullah as the February 2016, TK Stone Student of the Month.

HELMWOOD HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY             ASHLYN CANN

“Ashlyn is an amazing friend and is always there for you when you need her,” states a friend and classmate.  Ashlyn is a role model for her classmates and students at Helmwood Heights.  Her homework is finished on time with quality effort and neatness.  She participates in class activities and discussions with some insightful thinking.  Ashlyn easily makes connections with her morals and values to what is being discussed in class.  Following our Guidelines for Success and modeling our character ed words is easy for Ashlyn because they are part of her daily life.  She easily models compassion for others, is respectful in all situations and cooperates with everyone.

Ashlyn is involved with a variety of activities within the school and community.  She is on Helmwood’s Academic Team and is a member of the Beta Club this year.  She stays physically fit playing on 5th and 6th Grade E’town Panther travel basketball teams.  In her spare time, she is with her family and attends church at First Christian.

As you can see, Ashlyn Cann is a true winner of Helmwood’s Student of the Month.

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL          JAGGER MARDIS

Morningside Elementary is honored to nominate Jagger Mardis as the student of the month.  He is a one of a kind student and person.  He is the epitome of a role model student here at Morningside.  He can always be found following the Guidelines for Success and has an amazing attitude even when things get tough.  Earlier in the school year Jagger was voted the hardest-worker in class by his peers.  Since then he has a new found confidence that is yielding amazing results.  In addition to his stellar academics he also plays basketball and is on the All-Star baseball team. When I asked a few students about Jagger’s interaction with them they were quick to say he is kind, athletic, an amazing baseball player, and above all else he is always there when we need him.  Although he is highly thought of by his peers, his teachers, and the staff he remains humble and just wants to be the best he can be every day.  When asked how he approached each day he said he just tries to do his best all the time so that he can learn more and be more prepared for his life.  In the future he wants to play college basketball for the University of Louisville and then play for the NBA Golden State Warriors.  All in all Jagger is a wonderful student who works hard, gives the utmost respect to his teachers and friends, and enjoys life.  You can see there are many reasons that we are honored to recognize Jagger Mardis as the Morningside student of the month.

PANTHER ACADEMY                                       LANDEN HINES

Three words that describe Landen are responsible, well-loved and hard worker.

When thinking of the word responsible, Landen’s picture pops in my head.  He is a great role for others in the room as he does exactly what he should without being asked most of the time.  No matter which table he has been placed in our room, he has a positive impact on those around him.

Landon is loved by all in the room.  Whether they are racing on the playground or working in centers, the other students like to have Landen in their group.  He always has such a calm, pleasant manner about him.

Even at his very young age, Landen is very meticulous in his work and works hard at whatever he is doing.  He has neater handwriting that most adults.  Even when a task may be difficult, he works without giving up.

PANTHER PLACE                                             JORDAN BISHOP

Jordan Bishop is the Panther Place student of the month for February.  He comes to us from Helmwood Heights Elementary where he is in Ms. Lyman’s first grade class.  Ms. Abby, our first grade teacher, said that Jordan was chosen as her class’ current line leader because of his excellent leadership skills.  He shows other students the correct way to walk in line.  He comes in everyday ready to work and stays on task until his homework is completed.  Jordan is always willing to help other students with their activities and is a great friend to everyone.  He encourages other students to be kind and take turns.  He is a great student and always has a positive attitude.  We are proud to name Jordan Panther Place’s February student of the month.

V.C. Approve Job Descriptions for Gifted and Talented Education
Rationale

Ms. Cora Wood, Director of Personnel is requesting that the Board of Education approve the following job descriptions:

  • Gifted and Talented Education Teacher
  • Gifted and Talented Education Coordinator

The current job description for Gifted Education Coordinator/Teacher is attached for your review.  This job description was created in 1990, but is in need of revision to more accurately describe the job functions of two separate positions.  In 1990, the district probably had only one gifted education teacher, who also served as the coordinator for the district.  Since that time, more students have been identified for services, and as a result, we now have two certified employees that serve the needs of the gifted and talented students in the district.

The Gifted and Talented Education Teacher has a different role from the Gifted and Talented Education Coordinator.  As a result, two job descriptions were created from the 1990 edition.  The two proposed job descriptions, enclosed for your review and approval, have some similarities and differences.  Any revisions or additions to the job description are highlighted in yellow for your convenience.

Your approval of the job descriptions would be greatly appreciated.

Attached is the old job description for Gifted Education Coordinator/Teacher, the job description for Gifted and Talented Education Teacher and Gifted and Talented Education Coordinator for your review.
