Students of the Month

ELIZABETHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL                        RILEY JONES

The EHS student of the month for November is Riley Jones.   Riley is an outstanding student that shows great leadership skills and is extremely well liked by her peers.   Her list of accomplishments is endless, including being on the varsity Lady Panther Soccer team since a sophomore, with a region runner up this year and being region champion the two previous years.   Riley has been a member of student council every year of high school and was elected president of student council in her junior year.   This year, Riley is BETA Club president of which she’s been a member since she was a sophomore.   Riley is this year’s Etonian Yearbook editor and also a member of the Y-Club, FCA, Spanish Club and Pep Club.   It’s not a stretch at all to say that Riley’s a true Panther, inside and out.

Along with these activities, Riley has the honor of being selected as a Governor’s Scholar last year, attending the program at Morehead State University last summer.   She was also honored by being selected for the Lincoln Trail Youth Salute program as a junior.

Riley’s Advanced Placement English Teacher Mr. Ernst shared this about her:  “Riley is one of the most mature students I have had the pleasure of working with.  Over two years as a Beta Club officer and now as a student in Advanced Placement Literature, she has invariably proven herself to be intelligent, responsible, hard-working, and respectful; perhaps more importantly, she is a thoughtful and sincere young woman who is not afraid to be honest with herself and those around her—she’s always wearing her “fireproof pants.” Riley will undoubtedly accomplish great things, and I look forward to seeing the impact she has on the world.”

Mr. Swiney, the sponsor of the yearbook, had these comments:  “Riley has been selected as our yearbook editor for this year. She’s never been in the journalism class before, so she’s had to learn the software program on the fly. I anticipate another exceptional production under her leadership.”

As Mr. Yates states, “Riley is an exceptional student, but more importantly, person.  She gives terrific effort, initiative, and discussion everyday in AP Government and Politics and I'm proud to say I teach her. “    Congratulations  Riley for being selected as the November Student of the month and thank you for all of your contributions as an Etown Panther.  Etown High School is truly honored to have you represent us.

T.K. STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL                  ISABELA MOORE-MENDEZ

Isabela Moore- Mendez is an outstanding representative of the characteristics and traits we value at T.K. Stone.  She is a friendly, outgoing, dedicated student, a team player, and an active participant in our school.  Her teachers have many words of praise to describe Isabela.

Her Spanish teacher, Mrs. Lunsford, says of Isabela:  “ It’s not easy to pick just one  students from my 8th grade classes for the student of the month distinction. However, given the criteria, Isabela Moore-Mendez came to mind quickly.  Isabela is the type of student teachers love to have!  She is kind, respectful, and a hard worker.  Isabela is willing to put in effort to understand each day’s lessons.  I have seen her helping other students, when it is appropriate to do so.  Isabela is a pleasure to teach and a delight to have in  class!”

Additionally, Mrs. Evans, who instructs Isabela in Band has this to say:

“Isabela Moore-Mendez is an exceptional young lady.  She is a member of the Elizabethtown High School Marching Band and is first chair flute in the T.K.S. Symphonic Band.  As her band director, I have seen many examples of her talent and have been impressed by her diligence and work ethic.  Isabela always maintains a refreshingly positive attitude and is a great help to her peers.  It is pretty rare to see such a young student with the aptitude and ambition to know what they want to achieve and the direction and purpose they need to achieve it.  I’m very much looking forward to watching Isabela continue to improve and grow as a musician and student.”

For these reasons, we are very proud to name Isabela Moore- Mendez as the November, T.K. Stone Student of the Month.

MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL             GAVIN BREUNIG

IT is my honor to nominate Gavin Breunig as Morningside Elementary School’s November Student of the Month.  Gavin is nominated by his fifth grade homeroom teacher, Mrs. Oldham, but is well-loved and admired by all of his teachers.  According to Ms. Rowland, Gavin is always consistently answering questions elaborately and with great detail in Social Studies class.  Mrs. Key shared that Gavin is always focuses, continually giving his best effort, and visibly enjoying Reading class.  Creativity and thinking outside the box are strengths of Gavin’s in writing class, according to Mrs. Line.  In math with Mrs. Oldham, Gavin is persistant in solving problems and quick to encourage the success of others.

Gavin is a well-rounded young man.  He plays youth league basketball and baseball, participates in Religious Education classes at St. James, and was recently recognized by the Young Achievers program.  At school, he is identified as Gifted and Talented in General Intelligence, but never lacks humility in his achievements.  He was selected by his classmates to be a member of the Student Council this year.  Gavin’s Student Council election speech touched the hearts of all who heard it as he spoke so sweetly about the kind of friend, student, and even grandson that he is.  He is always kind to his peers, even those who others might shun, and never ceases to show the utmost respect to his teachers and other adults in the building.

Gavin has a quick sense of humor, a curious spirit, and a sharp wit.  I am honored to be Gavin’s teacher, and look forward to watching him continue to be an outstanding student, and grow to be an extraordinary member of our community.

Gehrig’s favorite subjects are math and spelling.  He loves playing jeopardy and trivia games.  He is also a member of the Big Red Rascal Club at Western Kentucky University where he enjoys attending their ballgames.

Among Gehrig’s many interests are crossfit, hunting, fishing, going to the beach, watching TV shows like Scooby Doo, Teen Titans, and Goosebumps.  He also loves to play WII, XBOX, and hanging out with his friends.

Gehrig plays baseball at EABC and also plays for the travel team, Hitsquad.  He is also a member of the Etown 3rd/4th grade basketball team.

Gehrig is a joy to have in the classroom and a great role model for our students.  Congratulations Gehrig!!

PANTHER ACADEMY                                                    EMMA RAINS

AS I open her car door, I tell Emma to “Have a great day!”  Emma promptly replies, “I will!”  and she does, everyday!  That positive attitude carries over throughout her day.  There is no challenge to big or too small for her to take on.  She never seems upset or flustered by what she is asked to do.  Even if she makes a mistake, or does not know what to do, she keeps that smile on her face.  Emma is always giving compliments to others.  She is very thoughtful and helpful.  She will gladly help another student if needed, or help the teacher if asked.  She never seems upset, and even if a student is unkind or pushes, she lets it roll off of her back without a thought.  Emma also has a great sense of humor and seems beyond her years in some ways.  She wants to be challenged and has a good time doing it!

PANTHER PLACE                                                           DAMIAN PAYTON

This is Damian’s first year at Panther Place.  Sara Compton, our third grade teacher nominated him for student of the month.  Damian shared that he enjoys Panther Place because he has made a lot of new friends, gets help with his homework and gets to do a lot of fun things.  Each day, he wants to make sure his homework is completed.  Damian is always respectful, willing to help others and has good manners.  When not at school or Panther Place, Damian helps his mom with his younger brothers and sisters while she makes dinner.  He also plays soccer and baseball and enjoys going to church with his family.  We are happy to name Damian as Panther Place’s November student of the month.

VALLEY VIEW EDUCATION CENTER                   SAVANNAH MATHERNE

We are proud to recognize Savannah Matherne as our November Student of the Month.  One of her teachers shared, "Savannah started with us in August and has been very determined in earning credits and focused on making life improvements.  Savannah has been a leader to the younger students in our building and has modeled leadership to those students.  We are excited for her to be our student of the month."  I have seen Savannah's confidence has steadily increased this year as she is seeing her own success in the classroom.  She will often stop by my office and give an update on how she did on her most recent test or assignment.

A peer stated that she is deserving of this award because she does her work, she tries hard, and is great with the little kids in our building.  Savannah enjoys playing volleyball, softball, and football with friends.  She wants to become a Beautician after high school.  I have no doubt that she will be very successful in fulfilling that dream.  Savannah, we are all so proud of you.  Keep up the good work!
