Rationale

Dollar General Summer Literacy Grant Overview:

The Dollar General Summer Literacy Grant will award up to 3,000 dollars to schools to use for a Summer Reading Program. Our Literacy Interventionist, Rachel Evans has applied for the grant to help purchase Flyleaf Decodable Readers to support our current Reading Programs in grades K-3. Our Current Reading programs of Heggerty and Fundations support Foundational reading skills.  The Decodable Readers supplied by the grant would be used by the Reading Interventionist during 4 weeks of the Summer program to support instruction of our most struggling readers. Tier 3 students struggling in Reading based on our current data would be targeted during the 4 week program. During this time the Reading Interventionist would use Heggerty, Fundations, and the Decodable Readers to support small groups of students in grades K-3.

The grant funding will cover the cost of Flyleaf decodable readers.

Statement of Impact:
16 students served during a 4 week summer school program in grades kindergarten-third.  Each grade level group will meet for 30 minutes, 4 times per week. Students will be taught foundational reading skills using the reading curriculum, Wilson's Fundations, a supplemental phonemic awareness curriculum, Heggerty, and Decodable readers.  Students will show progress in the following areas: phonological awareness, phonics, sight word vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

Project Design:
The sixteen students served, will be provided with small group instruction outside the school year during a 4 week summer school program.  Students will be placed in small groups by grade level (kindergarten-third).  Each grade level group will meet 4 times per week for 30 minutes a day.  The first 10 minutes will focus on phonemic awareness training, using the supplemental curriculum, Heggerty.  During this time, students will work on rhyming, identifying initial, middle and end sounds, blending, segmenting and manipulating syllables and sounds in words.  All phonemic awareness training instruction will be completed orally.  The next 10 minutes will focus on phonics and sight vocabulary, which are components of the Wilson's Fundations curriculum. Students will work on letter/sound identification (vowels, consonants, digraphs, vowel teams, etc) to both read and write words and sentences. The last 10 minutes, students will read decodable readers, focusing on the phonics and sight vocabulary taught in Wilson's Fundations, in addition to working on oral reading fluency and comprehension skills.  The instruction listed above includes the following foundational reading skills: phonological awareness, phonics, sight vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.  All foundational reading skills are necessary for proficient reading.

Timeline:
February:Discuss with Stacie Strotman the Reading Interventionist completing this program through the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant (complete)
April: Decodable readers will be ordered.  Parents of students participating will be notified of the time and dates for the summer reading program.
May: DIBELS scores from Spring administration will be reviewed.  Targeted areas for instruction and progress monitoring will be determined for each student.  Materials for the summer reading program will be organized:
          Heggerty: teacher manuals
          Fundations: teacher manuals, students materials
Decodable readers: will be organized using the scope and sequence from Wilson's Fundations
DIBELS: administration manuals, progress monitoring booklet for each student.
June-July: Students will participate in the 4 week summer reading program at John G. Carlisle.  At the end of each week, students will be progress monitored using DIBELS probes.

Assessment Methods:
Students will be progress monitored weekly, using the literacy assessment, DIBELS, (used district-wide) in order to assess the effectiveness of the small group instruction using Heggerty, Wilson's Fundations and decodable readers. DIBELS assesses foundational reading skills, including: letter naming, letter sounds, first sound fluency, phoneme segmentation, nonsense word fluency, oral reading fluency and reading comprehension (DAZE).  All DIBELS assessments are timed.  Students are given 1-minute to complete all assessments, with the exception of DAZE, in which students are given 3 minutes. Targeted areas of instruction will be determined based on student performance on the Spring DIBELS benchmark.  Students will be progress monitored in those targeted areas.  For example, if a second grade student performed below the 25th percentile on nonsense word fluency, the student would receive intensive instruction in phonological awareness training (segmenting, blending), phonics (letter/sound correspondence) and sight vocabulary (reading nonsense words and 3 letter words containing short vowel sounds).  The student would practice utilizing these skills while reading a decodable reader that focuses on 1-syllable words containing short vowel sounds.  Oral reading fluency practice and comprehension skills will be also be included in instruction .  At the end of each week, the student would be progressed monitored on nonsense word fluency using probes from DIBELS.

Measurable Results Defining student success:
At the end of the 4 week summer reading program, 88% of the students will show a growth of 2-4 percentiles on DIBELS progress monitoring. The skills targeted for instruction and progress monitoring will be determined using scores from the Spring DIBELS benchmark.
