Please note: Speakers are asked to refrain from personal remarks in which an individual is named. Comments are limited to two minutes unless extended by the board chair. Critical comments or complaints are processed through the District’s complaint procedures. Questions and concerns will be addressed by the Board through various venues, including, but not limited to, the district website and e-mail. This is a monthly agenda item used to keep the Board and Administration up to date on attendance and enrollment figures.  This report contains the membership and percentage of attendance for students by school and compares the current year’s enrollment figures with those from previous school years.

VII.3. 2020-2021 School Calendar

Rationale

Requested that the Covington Board of Education accept as an informational item with the possible action to vote on the 2020 – 2021 School Calendar. The 2020-2021 Student Calendar was approved by the elected Calendar Committee unanimously on January 23, 2020.

Calendar contains:

  • 4 Professional Development Days
  • 4 Holidays
  • 1 Opening Day
  • 1 Closing Day
  • 8 Teacher Equivalency Days
  • 185 Teacher Days
  • 6 Possible Make-up Days (if required)

VII.4. Amendment to Superintendent's Contract

Rationale

Paragraph 16 of the current contract between the Superintendent and the Board of Education provides for the one year rollover that may be exercised at any time during the contract term and by mutual agreement of the parties.  If the rollover is approved then the Superintendent’s contract shall be extended so that the termination date of the Contract shall be changed from June 30, 2021 to June 30, 2022.  All other terms and provisions of the Superintendent’s contract shall remain in full force and effect.

In December of 2019, the fall/winter surplus items were recognized and advertised to all staff.  Four bidders participated and the items awarded as indicated total bid award to be collected is $882.15.

IX.1. School-Related Trip Request ~ Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA)

Rationale

Pursuant to CIPS Policy 09.36, School-Related Student Trips requires board approval for overnight trips. Mr. Wesley Neal and Ms. Brittany Riffle, both Holmes Middle School Teachers, are requesting approval for fifteen  students to attend Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA) on March 1-3, 2020 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Location: Crowne Plaza, Louisville, KY

Purpose of trip:  The Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA) is a 3-day experiential learning conference in which students participate directly in simulated international diplomacy. KUNA offers students the opportunity to experience the richness of cultures from around the world, develop empathy, and hone their critical thinking skills while engaging with a wide variety of perspectives and global issues.

Transportation mode: School Bus

Number of students attending: 15

Number of adults attending: 2 (Wesley Neal and Brittany Riffle)

Breakdown of cost:

Registration, Hotel, Food: Registration, hotel and food will be bundled through KUNA, students have applied for financial aid. The Elsa Sule Foundation grant will cover majority of costs associated with registration and hotel. Covington Partners will make up the difference in what is not covered through the financial aid process.

Transportation cost: $1,500, covered by Covington Education Foundation

Temp duty: Substitute coverage needed for teachers March 2-3

IX.2. School Bus Maintenance Agreement

Rationale

During the annual review of the district's insurance policies with the insurance agent, it was brought to the attention of the Finance Officer about having a school bus maintenance agreement.  This agreement is entered into when Covington provides school bus maintenance services to another school district for a fee.

The Finance Officer consulted with the Superintendent, the Transportation Department, and the district's Board Attorney on creating the School Bus Maintenance Agreement.

Please find attached for board review and approval of this agreement.

IX.3. Family Resource and Youth Service Centers Continuation Grants

Rationale

Every two years a continuation grant application is submitted to the Office of Family Resource/Youth Services Centers for the Family Resource and  Youth Services Centers in our district. Each of the elementary schools, the early childhood center, middle school and high school have continuation grant applications.
