IV.a. Academic Performance Committee Recommendation Concerning Valedictorian/Salutatorian/Top Ten
Laura Cooley
Rationale

The Academic Performance Committee decided to keep things the way they are, but clarify the language presented about it.  The information is in two different places in the handbook.  Nowhere does it say that a top 10 is to recognized based on the numeric calculation, only valedictorian and salutatorian.  Board policy does say that all students will be ranked, but that only valedictorian and salutatorian is recognized.  Below is the language approved for clarification:

  1. High School Valedictorian and Salutatorian criteria recommendation
    1. Students will be ranked, and a valedictorian and salutatorian will be recognized.  Valedictorian and salutatorian would be determined using numeric grades and a weight multiplier of 1.25 on each weighted class.  The rank will be averaged to the nearest one hundredth of a point.  Ties for the highest rank will be recognized as Co-Valedictorians.  (see SBDM policy C.93.05.23c; Student Handbook, p. 35)

In addition to the valedictorian and salutatorian, students graduating under the “graduation with honors” system (see SBDM policy C.93.05.23c; SBDM policy C.98.07.09; Student handbook, p. 34) will be recognized at graduation.

Motion Passed:   passed with a motion by Mr. Michael Rowe.

Motion Passed:   passed with a motion by Mr. Lyle Blackburn and a second by Mr. Dusty Layne and the consensus of the council.

IV.b. Academic Performance Committee Recommendation Concerning Humanities Credit
Laura Cooley
Rationale

The Academic Performance Committee recommends the following:

  1. If taking two visual or performing arts classes in the same area, then that will fulfill the visual and performing arts requirement for graduation.
  2. If a student does not take two visual or performing arts classes in the same area, the student will take Humanities either junior or senior year to fulfill the visual and performing arts requirement for graduation

(Another way of thinking about this:  if a student takes one art (or band or chorus) class, for example, it will be counted as an elective; if a student takes a second art (or band or chorus) class, it fulfills the requirement.)

Actions Taken

Motion Passed:  Motion to accept academic performance committees recommendation concerning humanities credit. passed with a motion by Mr. Lyle Blackburn and a second by Ms. Susan Kennon and the consensus of the council.

IV.c. Academic Performance Committee Recommendation Concerning ACT Prep Class
Laura Cooley
Rationale

After discussion, the committee chose to take no action on this, so no recommendation.

(The discussion centered around the idea of “teaching the test,” and if ACT is measuring academic aptitude, then teaching a class just to take a test is not best instructional practice in the classroom.  Also discussed was the fact that ACT review is done within the classroom not only the few weeks prior to the test, but throughout the year.)
