October Site Based Decision Making Council Regular Meeting
I. Call to Order
Discussion

Mr. Booher called the meeting to order at 4:34.

II. Public Comment
Discussion

Ms. Stewart brought up the concerns of the teachers about the change in the school day schedule with regards to lunch and the possibility of looking at adding a policy for teachers and SBDM to approve changes to the bell schedule or to add a bell/lunch schedule section to the Yearly Schedule Policy.

Mr. Hobbs also brought up that the 25 minutes that teachers do now have for lunch are not completely "duty free" since the first part of lunch teachers are still wrapping up their classes, answering questions, etc.

Mr. Booher said he would address the bell schedule and lunch during his principal's report.

Mr. Blackburn brought up concerns from teachers who came to him about adding the TruScore test on the next two Fridays and how that they feel that teachers are not being consulted about decisions being made and they feel that the time would be better spent getting students caught up.

Mr. Booher went over the decision making process that went into deciding to do the TruScore and how it is very hard on everyone at this time.

Also, it was discussed that our volleyball game last week at Floyd Central had a positive case from a staff member at Floyd and that anyone who attended the game should monitor for symptoms.

We added the changes back to the departments that were taken away in July.  Copier is encumbered $20,000 and we won't know exactly how much we use until July.

Mr. Booher went over plans to create an outdoor eating area by the flagpole.  Mr. Trimble will pay for the concrete and he would like for SBDM to pay for 12 picnic tables.  We have quotes from Wright Concrete and thepark and facilities for this improvement. Mr. Blackburn made a motion to take $700 from detention, subs, and drivers to add to Other to pay for picnic tables.

Mr. Booher will take the $3400 from athletics to pay for an eating area by the softball field.

VI.B. Principal's Report
Discussion

All SBDM members are not trained.

We moved our Cognia SACS accreditation to Spring.

Mr. Booher bragged on the teachers who are doing more than ever to be able to teach and help kids learn through all this craziness.  Teachers need and deserve a pay raise for service to the students and the school.

Next two Fridays will be TruScore and Map testing for 7-11 and ACT rewards for 12. Tornado Drills and Lockdown drills will be done also.

Bus evacuations and fire drills are completed.

We have won a 2020 College Success Award from GreatSchools.org.  for our success in preparing students for college and beyond at a high level and they persist into a second year and beyond once they are enrolled in college.

Bell Schedule/Lunch-Mr. Booher explained his rationale in changing the bell schedule.  1. Start time needed changing to stagger between the elementary and high school, 2. the Healthy@School guidelines had to be followed to be able for students for socially distance to take masks off to eat, 3.  the later start time had to be taken from lunch so that it was not taken from instructional time, 4.  less time at the end of lunch decreases the amount of time students are socializing and possibly contracting COVID.

Possible solutions--1. decreasing each class a few minutes, which he is not for since that losing instructional time, 2. adding 15 minutes onto the end of the school day which he is also not for. 3. the less time at lunch was only meant to be temporary due to the pandemic and it will be changed back when we are back to normal.

Mr. Blackburn brought up was it a state requirement to have staggered start and end times.  Mr. Booher said yes and it was also recommended to have separate buses for elementary and high, but that isn't possible at our school.

Mr. Hobbs said it the issue was possibly more about being surprised and felt left out of the decision making process than actually losing time from lunch.

Ms. Stewart said that everything about the pandemic has been hard and decisions that have just been tossed out that teachers have had strong reactions
