II. Academic Spotlight
II.A. FRYSC Dialogue
Discussion

Present was Ms. Sue Crabtree, Coordinator, and provided the Board with the following update:

  • Changed phone number this year to an outside line which costs considerably less.
  • Helped about 40% of students with clothing.
  • Almost half of students were serviced with school supplies.
  • Backpack Program – served about 22 students through the summer who received food on a weekly basis. Two churches coordinated with one delivering groceries each week taking four of the biggest families. The Christian Church still had a few that they served on their Wednesday night program.
  • FRYSC Corps Literacy Program – CES last year had 22 of 23 students improve MAP scores and 15 of the 23 students met their goal.
  • Health Fair – Included all of CMS last year. 227 referrals with 116 of those for dental needs.
  • Back To School – 132 students at CES received school supplies, 37 students at CMS and 60 at CHS came by and visited the FRYSC booth.
  • We do depend on the community for a lot of FRYSC activities including the Health Fair and we had $2,600 in monetary donations from the community.

II.B. Adult Education Dialogue
Discussion

Present were Ms. Midge Hunt – Coordinator, Mr. Ricky Hunt – Instructor, Ms. Melinda Parrott – Instructor and Ms. Jennifer Willis – Instructor. The Adult Education staff provided the Board with the following update:

  • Ms. Midge Hunt, Coordinator:
  • TCALC 14th overall in state as of June 12th.
  • TCALC 8th in measurable skill gains.
  • TCALC 9th in academic performance.
  • Up 7% in GED goal.
  • New logo this year with Adult Education called Skills U. Skills U launched July 1st which improves connection to the employment and training opportunities to improve employees to have better influence on families.
  • Employers have asked that we train more on soft skills.
  • We added Ricky Hunt to our staff this year. He is at the career center conducting testing.
  • Ms. Melinda Parrott, Instructor:
  • Launched last year was AOKY – Accelerated Opportunity – students who are working on their GED can also get college credit through ECTC so they can dually get their GED and college credit. This year a new component to that is employment. Our piece is adult education and literacy activities and workforce prep activities like soft skills and NCRC certification. Then there is a third piece with employers.
  • We work with a lot of KTAP students. They’re allowed to receive KTAP for sixty months and we try to get the state to refer every single person that comes into the office to get KTAP to us first because part of what we are doing is help people prepare for the workforce. We try to get them in, get their skills improved, get their soft skills certification, their NCRC certification, we do resume training, we do online job searches, and we have a guy that comes from ECTC that does all kinds of other programs in addition to that.
  • Once they are in KTAP and have proved their attendance at TCALC, there is another program called Ready to Work, Work to Learn and that is also with ECTC. With Work to Learn, again you can get your GED while earning money. They will pay you to work with us. Once you have received your GED, there’s the Ready to Work program and we have 3 students right now that are involved in that program. One is getting her GED and two of them are student workers. One of the girls is going to go on to college and attend ECTC. One of the students started college this month and he does a lot of tutoring with our other students.
  • One of the things that I’m trying to get started with the Ready to Work, Work to Learn program is partnerships with Goodwill and The Mission Store looking for some business casual clothing for those students. If you come across any business casual clothing, I can use that for some of the student workers. Also, I could use some logo items such as Campbellsville Eagle t-shirts.
  • Ms. Jennifer Willis, Instructor:
  • This is my second year at TCALC and my first year of taking over the corrections instruction. I go to the jail two times a week, Monday and Wednesday and spend my entire day there. I’m instruct the men in the morning and women in the afternoon. David Payne goes with me and is my backup for the male inmates. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I go to The Healing Place in the afternoons and work with a couple of students there. Right now I have 5 men and 3 women who are working for their GED. The state inmates get 90 days off their sentence if they get their GED. They also get 30 days off their sentence if they get their National Career Ready Certificate. Some of them are court ordered to get their GED before they are released.
  • Last year I had 6 women that I worked with to get their GED. David said he thought there were 5 men to get their GED. We had several to get their NCRC.
  • I try to work for a quick turnover at the jail and The Healing Place because we never know how long they’re going to be there.

III.B. Community
III.C. Staff
III.D. Superintendent Report
Discussion

Mr. Kirby Smith updated the Board with the following:

  • It is official, the 2017-2018 school year is off and running. We are off to a great start. We started the year off last Tuesday with opening day for all staff. We had a great day filled with enthusiasm and excitement for the new year. We have added 13 new staff members to the Eagle family. I am providing each of you with a list of all new employees and what building they are working in.
  • I have looked at our enrollment numbers for the past ten years and our numbers for this year are very similar to years past. Since the first day of school we have enrolled 41 students with more set to enroll this week. We have enrolled around 11-12 students a day since opening day.
  •  Since we last met on July 10th it seems as though I have been burning the roads going from training to training. I had my second round of Superintendent training in Frankfort July 12th and 13th followed by the annual KASA conference July 26th – 28th. Both the training and conference were very beneficial.
  • I spoke at the Campbellsville KIWANIS club meeting July 18th. I took with me all three Principals and gave them a chance to introduce themselves.
  • I attended my first GRREC Superintendent’s board meeting August 2nd
  • We had a wonderful turnout for the district wide prayer walk on Sunday August 6th. I’m guessing we had somewhere between 50-75 attend. Thanks to our FCA for sponsoring this event.
  • August 2nd was our district wide professional development. This PD was developed, organized and conducted by the best – our own peopleI have talked to many teachers and read most all the evaluations and so far everyone loved the set up and learning from each other. Huge success.
  • The playground equipment at the CMS campus has been taken down and workers are in the process of installing at CES. Hopefully the playground will be up and running by the end of this week.
  • The traffic pattern at CES has worked wonderful.
  • The bleachers are complete at the Durham campus and we have already had a couple events – one soccer scrimmage and several middle school football games. Bleachers look great and everyone is very complimentary. The old high school football scoreboard has been installed at the Durham campus.
  • All parking lots have been re-sealed and re-stripped and look really good.
  • Our extracurricular activities are in full swing – we have already had several events:
  • Middle school football has played 3 games and are 2-1 with a game tomorrow against TC at home.
  • Middle school girls’ basketball season is underway.
  • At CHS the football, soccer and volleyball season all kick off this week.  The Forcht bank bowl games are this weekend. We play Saturday night at 8:30 against Washington Co.
  • High School golf season for our boys and girls is well underway, the teams have already played in 2-3 matches.
  • Cross Country season begins August 24th.
  • Our Marching band will kick off the season August 26th at Christian Academy of Louisville.
  • CHS will host its first blood drive of the year on Friday August 18th from 8:30-1:00.
  • We will be in school on Monday August 21st during the Solar eclipse. All students and staff will be provided with glasses.
  • Last week I emailed you all a copy of the “Your Duty Under the Law” – The Kentucky Open Records and Open Meetings Acts plus the Managing Government Records – A Cooperative Undertaking.  I am now giving you the Proof of Receipt to sign and return.
  • I am providing each of you with a copy of my calendar for July and August.
  • Update on the floor at CES- I checked this morning and as this morning the room where the new glue was used is holding up good.  Keep your fingers crossed.

III.E. Other Communications
Discussion

Ms. Pat Hall, Board Chair:

  • I certainly want to thank Mr. Smith for the calendar. This is something that he is more than willing to do for us but it will become part of his ongoing Superintendent’s evaluation. He has embraced this and stayed in communication giving us a snapshot at the end of each of his weeks and we can start checking off the items.
  • I do want to announce that there will be a Special Called Board Meeting on August 28th to hold the Tax Hearing and Board Member Work Session.
