The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Larry Muse.  Also present were Wayne Roberts, Superintendent and Gordon Germain, Board Counsel.

3. Recognition
Rationale

Junior Caleb Cook advanced from regional level academic team to state, which is Saturday, March 18.

 

Discussion

Board Members recognized High School Junior Caleb Cook for earning a spot at the state Governor’s Cup Academic Team competition on Saturday, March 18th in Louisville.


Cook tied for first place in the composition category at regional competition in February which advanced him to state. The high school team had competed in a variety of written assessment categories at region. All of the Wayne County High School team members that competed at the district level moved on to the regional competition. The team includes: Esther Prater, Jacob Haynes, Caleb Cook, Sophia Beaudoin, Sam Criswell, and Jakob Brammer. They are coached by WCHS Teacher Dean Sumpter, a veteran academic team player, coach and official.


During the district competition, Sophia Beaudoin and Caleb Cook tied for 2nd place in Composition, Jacob Haynes placed first in Social Studies and Caleb Cook placed 5th, Sam Criswell placed 3rd in Arts and Humanities, and Sophia Beaudoin placed 5th in Science. They all advanced to the regional tournament (Sam Criswell was unable to attend) which took place late in February.

Order #80 - Motion Passed:  Assistant Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer Brian Dishman updated Board Members on Wayne County Schools' initiative of our Community Accountability meetings and survey results. Mr. Dishman went on to present a proposed "Portrait of Success". Approval of this Portrait of Success passed with a motion by Mrs. Melissa Upchurch and a second by Mr. Benton Sloan.

Discussion

Superintendent Wayne Roberts invited Board Members to the first ever Cardinal Impact Award ceremony and reception at WCHS on March 17, 2023.  This is a program started by Wayne County High School to recognize community members and student clubs/groups who show compassion, kindness, generosity and more through volunteer efforts throughout our community.
