“Good News”

May 2013

Old Kentucky Home Middle School had seven students who took the ACT.  Five qualified from state recognition with a score of 19 or higher. Those five students are Ellen Hutchins, Ethan Lamar, Janet Newton, Miles Newton, and Tanner Thompson.

(1 scored 19, 3 scored 20 and 1 scored 21.)

We are so proud to announce that our AFJROTC unit received the Distinguished Unit with Merit Award -- this is the 8th year in a row for Distinguished Unit and out of those 8, the 3rd time we've received the "with Merit" distinction for Exceeding Standards on the Headquarters Evaluation.

AFJROTC primarily looks at the goals set by students and the impact they have on cadets, the school and the community.  I know some have come to expect this level of performance, given our previous record, but each year, students have to make a unified commitment to the unit mission and its goals and put in a lot of effort to accomplish their goals, and more.  We are extremely proud of what these cadets have done to keep the corps strong and to serve their school and community.

VII.A. KPREP Report
Tim Beck/Stephanie Koontz
Rationale

The five day test window for the K-Prep (Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress) Assessment began on May 15  and ended on May 21, 2013.  All schools will have the opportunity for students to make up assessments  due to absences.  Make-up sessions can be done during the 5-day window or during the 4 days after the window ends while test materials are prepared for shipping.  There have been days when schools experienced 100% attendance and overall our attendance has been strong during the testing window.

Our building assessment coordinators have done well to train proctors, distribute materials, and monitor the testing process.  We are now nearing the time when all test materials will be collected and inventoried for shipping.

The EOC (end of course) testing is also drawing to a close.  EOC testing is only required for English I, Biology, and Alg. I.  The constructed response portion of the EOC was administered in late April.  These constructed responses will count 2% toward the student’s final exam grade.  Schools are either in the process or done with the scoring of those written responses.

The multiple choice portion of the EOC completed this week will be sent off for scoring.  Because of the changes incurred by technical issues, our scores will not return until June; as a result, teachers will be giving a final exam that will count toward 12% of the student’s  final exam grade.  Following this revised structure, we are still in compliance with the Kentucky Department of Education expectations for EOC and the use of an EOC constructed responses as a part of the final assessment.

With all the uncertainty, changes, and challenges along the way, Nelson County assessment coordinators, teacher proctors, school administration, and school staff are to be commended for their flexibility and diligence to protect the integrity of these assessments and support the premise of assessment for instruction.

VII.B. Monsanto Grant
Tom Dekle
Rationale

The America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education (AFGRE) grant program is an initiative to strengthen math and science education in rural areas. Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, the program allows farmers to nominate a public school district to compete for a grant of either $10,000 or $25,000. The program was piloted in Illinois and Minnesota in 2011 and was successful enough that Monsanto decided to roll the program out nationally this year in eligible USDA Crop Reporting Districts (CRD). Nelson is one of 30 eligible counties in Kentucky. To participate, an eligible school district must first be nominated by an eligible farmer, after which the application process may begin. We have been nominated and the application process has begun. One $10,000 grant will be awarded to a school district in each of Kentucky’s 4 eligible CRDs. One $25,000 grant will be awarded to one school district in each eligible state or region, for states with fewer than 75 elibible counties. Kentucky will compete in in the mid-south region, which includes 4 states (Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee and Kentucky). There are 39 elibible states. No matching funds are required. An application can be submitted for either amount, but not both. Last year we applied for and received a grant for $10,000. We wish to apply for the same amount again this year.
