GOOD NEWS-February 2013

First, some good news from Nelson County High: Zac Lawson is our wrestling region champion in the 285 pound division. Zac went 2-2 at the State Wrestling Tournament and finished the season 35-4. Also, Nelson County High School student, Andrew Ackley qualified for state with a third place finish. Andrew went 1-2 at the State Tournament and finished the season 35-13. Congratulations to a job well done by both athletes.
The Nelson County High School Archery Team placed first out of 7 teams at Bardstown. Alexis Downey finished second place in the female high school division while Morgan Harrell finished in third place.
Seven Nelson County Juniors were nominated by the District Selection Committee for the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program. Congratulations to Lori Allen, Katrina Boone, Alexander Delaney, Kaylee Hall, Morgan Janes, Thomas Matthews, and Matthew Smith. They will be notified in April 2013 if they were selected to the Governor’s Scholars Program.
Kelsey Linton and Dylan Beasley were crowned Nelson County High School homecoming Queen and King.
The following Nelson County High School students made the All-District Band: Bret Hardin, Hunter Bradley, Nathan Brooks, and Miranda Culver. Also, the following two students made the All-State Choir: Nathan Brooks, Dane Pike, and Colin Brown.
Good news from Old Kentucky Home Middle School Academic Team students; Caroline Boone and Miles Newton, placed at the Governor’s Cup Regional in written assessment.
Josh Cain placed in the Winter STLP competition with his digital art "Sport." Also going to the state competition will be the STLP project group with "A Gift from Home" and the OKH Middle School Future Problem Solvers team who placed 4th. They will all be going on to the state competition in March.
Caroline Boone won the OKH spelling bee and will be going to the district spelling bee February 21st.
10 students from the 7th and 8th grade OKH Middle School band made the all district band. They auditioned with over 400 students from 13 different counties. The students will rehearse with a distinguished conductor and perform with the all district band.
Good News from Thomas Nelson High School: Student, Payton Carter received a $500.00 scholarship from the Kentucky 4-H Association after attending a 4-H Issues Conference in November. Payton is using the grant to form a Thomas Nelson High School club about drugs and alcohol awareness called the Straight Edge Ambassadors.
Spencer Goff was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on Saturday, February 9th. This is the highest honor that a scout can earn and it culminates a 9 year journey in scouting for Spencer.
Thomas Nelson Juniors; Emily Davis, Maggie Downs, Laryn Hilderbrandt, JoEllyn Medley, Ashley Norman, Tory Tate, and Austin Willett were selected to the Class of 2014 Lincoln Trail Youth Salute.
Six Thomas Nelson Juniors were nominated by the District Selection Committee for the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program. Congratulations to Allison Burba, Emily Davis, Maggie Downs, Stephany Vittitow, Ben Watkins, and Austin Willett. They will be notified in April 2013 if they were selected to the Governor’s Scholars Program.
Easton Culver competed in the STLP Winter Virtual Competition in Graphic Design.
Maria Cambron and Basil Sanders were recognized as Optimist Outstanding Students from Thomas Nelson High School. They were recognized at the February Optimist Club of Bardstown meeting on February 11th.
Nelson County Early Learning Center hosted a Home Town Heroes Read-a-Thon to support our local American Red Cross. This was a fun curriculum that focused on the importance of reading, community helpers and helping others. The center had various guest speakers read to the students. Readers included; NC Superintendent, three NC School Board Members, the NC Family Resource Centers, School Nurses, a Principal, an Instructional coach, a dental hygienist, two bank employees, a nurse's secretary, a pharmacy technician, several parents and grandparents.
Nelson County Early Learning Center students were asked to find sponsors to sponsor their class; one penny for each book read at home and at school. Donations were made as well. The final total of books read and money collected will be presented to the American Red Cross on February 28th.
4th grade student, Isaiah Greer was the Bloomfield Elementary Spelling Bee Winner; he will go on to represent Bloomfield Elementary in the Farm Bureau Spelling Bee Competition.
Bloomfield Elementary Students raised $1087.81 for the Red Cross.
Four Bloomfield Elementary Students were chosen to perform in Stephen Foster Productions' SHREK this summer: Camie Ashley, Jonah Brown, Abby Cornish, & Emily Simpson.
Boston Middle School Academic students; Juanita Vittitow, Dalton Hutchins, and Samantha Guernsey placed and will be moving onto the Governor’s Cup Regional.
4th grader, Lindsey Mauldin will be the Boston School representative at the Farm Bureau Spelling Bee Competition.
Congratulations to the Boston School 8th grade for ranking in the top twenty percent on the Explore Test.
5th grade student, Keegan Watts is the spelling bee winner at Foster Heights Elementary. He will represent Foster Heights Elementary at the Farm Bureau Spelling Bee Competition.
