VI.F. Calendar: Testing Window and Early Release
Rationale

Due to inclement weather and school cancellations, KDE is considering giving each district an option to move the testing window for the 2008-2009 assessment.

Our current calendar has the window from May 4 – May 15 (leaving 11 days of school after window). The State is considering May 11 – May 22 for testing (leaving 6 days of school after window).

Our current calendar has May 1 as an Early Release Day to allow staff to score portfolios. If testing changes, this date would move to May 8 as an Early Release Day for portfolio scoring.

If the state grants final approval for these changes, it is recommended that the Nelson County School District alter the school calendar to delay the testing window to May 11 – May 22 and to change the early release day to May 8. If KDE doesn’t grant final approval for these changes, the calendar will stay the same.

Actions Taken

Motion Passed:  Action to authorize the superintendent to modify the school calendar so that the testing window can occur as late as is legally possible; and action to change or eliminate the early release day associated with portfolio scoring, based upon final legislation enacted by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, was passed with a motion by Mr. Frank Hall and a second by Mr. Adam Wheatley.

VII.B.1. Shade Structure Construction Grant
Rationale

Issue: Funded through the American Academy of Dermatology’s (AAD) Shade Structure Program, this grant opportunity is designed to facilitate construction of shade structures for outdoor locations not protected by the sun and used by children. The program awards grants of $8,000 each for the purchase and installation of permanent shade structures that meet AAD requirements. The AAD will provide a permanent sign promoting the importance of sun safety for display near shade structures provided through the grant program. Kelli W. Morgan, M.D. of Bardstown Dermatology PSC, has agreed to sponsor applications for this grant program. No matching funds are required. The Nelson County District Day Care Program, Old Kentucky Home Middle School outdoor classroom program and Nelson County High School band all have expressed interest in submitting applications for a grant through this program.
