April 2015

Boston:
Boston's FPS team placed 2nd Elementary District Governor's Cup and will compete in Regional competition on Tuesday, March 17th.

The Elementary FPS team placed 2nd in the District competition.

Ms. Heather Smith, middle school social studies teacher, will represent our school and Nelson County as a nominee for the Campbellsville Excellence in Teaching Award.

NCHS:
Nelson County High students Clara Pozgay and Julia Taylor placed 6th and 10th in the State Governor's Cup competition. They were the only individual students in our entire region to place at state academic competition.

Nelson County High FFA will send 3 students to State Speaking contest to be held in June. Congratulations to Bailey Simms, Rachel Young, & Dean Hendricks on their accomplishments.

Congratulations to boys basketball coach – Bev Hart -- who was inducted into the Kentucky Basketball Coaches Court of Honor at the state boys basketball tournament on Friday. Coach Hart has coached for over 500 wins in 800 games through 31 seasons.

The Nelson County FFA Chapter participated in the Dustin Worthington “I Love Cows” Essay Contest Memorial Award.  This year’s winner is Martin Williams. Martin was recognized with a plaque at an Awards Presentation recently and wins an Angus Heifer!

Nelson County senior, Roby Pile won first in state for the Extreme Networking Challenge at the Student Technology Leadership Program championship

New Haven School:

The New Haven and Boston Middle School Band scored a Distinguished Rating at the 4th District Performance Assessment on March 26, 2015.

Our 1st Mystery Literacy Night was a big success. Students, Parents and Staff dressed up and worked to find out Who Stole the Cookies.

OKHMS:

As a result of their high ACT Scores, Erin O'Neil and Caroline Thomas are attending the 3 week long Academy for Summer Studies hosted by Duke University.  

OKH Beta Club will have 3 students advance to national competition this summer. 

Laurel Philpott - 1st place for on-site poetry, Lydia Newton - 1st place for digitally enhanced photography, and Kaley Knight - 2nd place for sculpture,

OKH bands competed at the KMEA District Concert Band Festival in March.  6^th and 7^th grade band scored proficient and the 8^th grade band was distinguished.

The district's current software for Food Service operations is no longer supported by the provider.

Motion Passed:  I recommend the Nelson County Board of Education approve Heartland School Solutions as the provider of Food Service software. This vendor is by far the most commonly used product in Kentucky School Districts and highly recommended. passed with a motion by Mrs. Diane Breeding and a second by Mr. David Norman.

ISSUE:            Change in Childcare rates for 2015-2016 recommended.

Motion Passed:  I recommend the Nelson County Board of Education approve the attached increase in Childcare rates for the 2015-2016 school year. passed with a motion by Mrs. Diane Breeding and a second by Mr. David Norman.

On Wednesday, April 15, 2015 The Herlihy Group and KDE worked with the Nelson and Washington County School Districts here at the Central Office on our newest College and Career Readiness Initiative.  The program enables teachers/counselors to facilitate student learning and interest in careers through an online format.  The program will connect students to: 

• an interest inventory,  
• online daily communication with professionals in a variety of careers,
• information to satisfy the Individual Learning Plan,
• opportunities to set up and participate in career learning activities where they might get more information concerning their interests from a variety of professionals,
•  other worthwhile course like activities targeting Career Readiness.

The April 15th training was the second training conducted in Kentucky.  The Nelson County Schools are one of 22 districts in the state with this program available to our student population.  At this time, we will begin the application of the program as a pilot.   Full implementation is scheduled for Fall 2015.
