Nelson County Schools

January 2015

BES:
BES was recently featured in the Kentucky Standard for our day of coding. It was exciting to see students so engaged in learning with technology.

BMS:
Three Bloomfield Middle School Teachers have made the commitment to pursue a National Board Certification. Susie Pozgay, Lorie Miller, and Jennifer Logsdon are working towards the National Board certification. Nelson County Schools provides approximately $40,000 annually as a result and in support of teacher professional development in this fashion.

Boston:
Both Teaching Art Together grants were funded for the spring. Beginning in February, we will be able to host a visiting artist Carla Gover who will teach dance to our students. In March, we will host Octavia Sexton, performing artist and storyteller artist who will work with our students to create a piece of writing.

Cox’s Creek:
We have four teachers enrolled to work on their National Board Certifications.

We were awarded the Artist in Residence Grant. We have an artist that will be joining us in February to teach dance to our students and workshops for our teachers.

New Haven:
New Haven staff and students collected several boxes of canned food and non-perishable items for those in need over the holiday season. New Haven Rolling Fork Fire Department distributed the items to those in need.

NCHS:
The NCHS FFA Christmas parade float depicting a traditional farm Christmas placed 2nd in this year’s Christmas parade in the non-profit organization category.

-The Nelson County Agriculture Department was the recipient of a $2250 Kentucky Agriculture Achiever grant from the Kentucky FFA Foundation. This grant will goes towards the purchase of LabQuest scientific data collection instruments and sensors.

-Savanna Hill, a freshmen in the NCHS Agriculture Department was awarded a $400 grant from the Kentucky Livestock Grant Program. This money will be utilized by Savanna to purchase a breeding heifer for her Supervised Agriculture Experience Program.

TNHS:
Thomas Nelson High School celebrates with band students from Bloomfield, Boston and New Haven were selected to participate in the 46th annual Eastern Kentucky Middle School Honor Band. Several students were selected to perform in the top honors band. Marissa Keith (New Haven) was selected as 1st Bassoon in the top honors band.
 
The Thomas Nelson Cheerleaders took 1st place in small division at the KAPOS Open State Competition!

VII.B. Born Learning Academy Grant

Team Up! The Family Resource Youth Service Center (FRYSC), wishes to wish to apply for a “Toyota Bornlearning Academy” grant to sponsor an Academy for Foster Heights Elementary School. This grant application is to support a structured workshop series  designed to provide guidance for parents, caregivers and communities to create quality early learning opportunities for young children. United Way of Kentucky, Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence and Toyota of Kentucky are all heavily involved with this project. The Academy focus is on kindergarten readiness and is designed to work closely with parents in support of this effort. Boston School, along with NC Early Learning Center has already been the recipient of this grant (2012,)  which has since expanded Each academy consists of six monthly workshops. Grant funding can consist of either $3,000 or $6,000, to be determined through the application screening process. The program is designed to engage parents and teach them about their child’s development. No matching funds are required.

VII.C. "Teaching Art Together" (TAT) Grant

Boston School, Cox’s Creek Elementary School and Bloomfield Elementary School have all been awarded TAT (Teaching Art Together) artist residencies sponsored by the Kentucky Arts Council. These are competitive grants and each school applied seperately, with four awards total, out of four applications presented. Each residency is for a specific length of time and for a specific arts program.  

•           Boston received two awards, one for a Visual and Performing Arts project with artist Carla Grover. This project will compare and contrast the cultural groups that created Appalachian culture, music and dance. The project will be a 10-day residency to run 2-16 through 2-27. The second redidency, also a 10-day residency, will be with artist Octacvia Secton and focus on Appalachian storytelling and culture.

•           CCE was awarded a five-day residency with with artist Deborah Denenfield, who will focus on Native American dance. This project will primarily involve 4th and 5th grades, and is scheduled for 2-2 rhrough 2-6.

•           BES was awarded a a 10-day residency for a visual arts project with artist Carrie Neumayer. The artist will help students create several small murals that depict key moments in American history. The project will primarily target fifth grade students but will also involve younger students through peer tutoring. The residency is scheduled for 3-16 through 3-27.

In all, KAC awarded these schools $4,200, together, with a total applicant match of $2,800 required.

VII.D. Mathematics Achievement Fund (MAF) Grant Awards

Boston School and New Haven School have been awarded Mathematics Achievement Fund (MAF) grants sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Education. These grants are designed to support the implementation of key aspects of the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS). Teacher and Leader Effectiveness (TLE) and Data Driven Instruction (DDI). The award will provide teachers with real-time, professional learning tools and resources to support educators in reaching the vision for a college and career ready education. Units link together to form a complete K-5 mathematics curriculum that can be adjusted to meet the needs of individual students. Each of these grant applications requested $41,000 to support the salary of one mathematics intervention teacher for each school. This year these grants were highly competitive with very specific criteria required for winning applicants. Nelson County submitted a total of five applications.
