Good News

November 2014

The Patriot Volunteer Group is doing an awesome job at Bloomfield Elementary. They raised $5000.00 at the Fall Festival and are purchasing 15 Chrome Books for the classroom. This will create additional work stations for students to log onto Lexia and Reading Plus. They have also purchased headphones for all the classrooms and plan to purchase projection systems for the teachers. It’s a small group of mothers who work tirelessly for our school and we appreciate their dedication to BES.

Bloomfield Middle School Student Technology program went to the local STLP competition at the University of Louisville on Monday, November 10th.  Their computer building skills made them fierce competition, earning them a total score of 96 and moving them on to State Level competition.

Boston middle school girls' basketball team finished as runner-up in their division. We are very proud of the team and in particular the high level of character and class displayed in the championship game.

The 98th Annual Boston Oyster Supper was held on Saturday, November 8th and proved to be highly successful with lots of positive feedback from the community and volunteers.

On October 24th, Horizons Academy hosted its 1st ever blood drive. The goal for the blood drive was 30 units of blood. 32 units were collected and there were 16 first time donations. The public relations project group did an outstanding job of organizing the blood drive.

Nathan Brooks, a senior at Nelson County High School, has been selected to be a part of the 2014-2015 All-State Chorus.

Congratulations to the cross country teams for capping off a great season with super performances at the state championships.  The girls’ team finished in the state top 20 for the third straight season behind sisters Kelsey and Bree Hughes and a number of new PRs from our fabulous freshmen.  The boys’ team capitalized on their first state berth since 1997 to finish in the state top 25 behind another great performance from senior captain Will Ballard.

Congratulations to the Nelson County Marching band for placing 11th in the state in Class 3A state Semi-finals!  The band competed this last weekend at Bourbon County High School and their final score was a 79.6 which is their highest score in KMEA competition since 2004.

Clara Pozgay, NCHS STLP member, was chosen as Engineer for our region at the STLP Fall Showcase on Monday, November 10.

The Engineer is the pinnacle of STLP. The privilege of being an STLP Engineer comes with the serious responsibility of representing STLP regionally, statewide and (inter) nationally. Selected students will provide technical support and leadership at KySTE, the STLP State Championship and possibly ISTE.

New Haven’s Family Resource Center coordinated the ALL PRO Dads program. This is a father engagement program that provides for a chance for fathers and children to come together for breakfast and discussion. Mr. Payton led the session and provided talking points for how to have productive conversations. After the discussion the attendees watched a video. We had several fathers and children turn out for the first event. We are going to include all grade levels at the next session.

Old Kentucky Home Middle STLP students scored high enough on their Fall Showcase project to make it to the State Competition in March. Project title is Bully Busters.

OKH 6th grade girl's basketball came in as runner up's in the 6th grade girl's basketball tournament held recently in Lexington.

6th grader Kelsey Mattingly and 7th grader China Martin auditioned and were selected to participate in the 2014 ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) All State Choral event on October 31 & Nov 1. These students were selected to sing among the best singers in the state.

The Thomas Nelson High School Marching Band placed first in class A at the Letcher County Marching Band Invitational. They also received 2nd place Color Guard, 2nd place Drum Major and 1st place percussion with an overall score of 78.

Mrs. Rucci's HAVPA (History Appreciation of Visual and Performing Arts) classes will receive a $250 grant from the KY Art Educators Association. The funds will be used to purchase the supplies necessary for the student created project.
