“Good News”
July - 2014
Congratulations to Rachel Tichenor our newly elected National Junior Beta Secretary!! This is the first time a Nelson County student has been tagged to a national post in the Junior Beta Organization.
Congratulations to the entire Bloomfield Middle BETA Club for earning a nationally ranked - 5th place for the campaign skit that got Rachel elected to office. The national competition was held in Richmond, VA.
Blazer Learning Center hosted a 6th grade Boot Camp for all Bloomfield Middle School incoming sixth graders on June 30th. Activities included locker practice, a scavenger hunt of the school, internet safety, slide show, binder organization and other activities. The event ended with a social including free time in the gym, popcorn, games, etc. Students were fed breakfast and lunch through the Nelson County Schools summer feeding program at BES.
Boston School held 3 camps this summer. The 21st Century program provided an Aviation camp and students learned the science behind flight. They were able to visit Samuels Airport and build their own model planes. The second week was an Exploring Kentucky with digital storytelling. Students toured the Civil War Museum, created a digital story using Chromebooks, and made a quilt containing highlights of their artwork from the experiences of the week. Camp Invention was their 3rd camp. Led by teacher, Martina Amshoff, it was a week of critical thinking and problem solving where students worked together to come up with novel solutions to real problems. They created an invention, made blueprints, and built a working pinball (Pinbug) machine based on a study of the anatomy of insects. The camps were focused on STEM content, and all three were very successful.
Christy Vandeventer-FRYSC coordinator and incoming 8th grader at New Haven School, Jennifer Dones, attended the Youth Leadership Symposium which was focused on Leadership and Anti-substance use, in Carrollton KY. She participated in multiple workshops about leadership, teamwork and substance free lifestyles. Day two was a team building day. The children were placed into groups to complete survivor challenges. Jennifer led her team to victory in the shelter challenge. This was a great experience for Jennifer.
