Monsanto Grant
Tom Dekle
The America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education (AFGRE) grant program is an initiative to strengthen math and science education in rural areas. Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, the program allows farmers to nominate a public school district to compete for a grant of either $10,000 or $25,000. The program was piloted in Illinois and Minnesota in 2011 and was successful enough that Monsanto decided to roll the program out nationally this year in eligible USDA Crop Reporting Districts (CRD). Nelson is one of 30 eligible counties in Kentucky. To participate, an eligible school district must first be nominated by an eligible farmer, after which the application process may begin. We have been nominated and the application process has begun. One $10,000 grant will be awarded to a school district in each of Kentucky’s 4 eligible CRDs. One $25,000 grant will be awarded to one school district in each eligible state or region, for states with fewer than 75 elibible counties. Kentucky will compete in in the mid-south region, which includes 4 states (Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee and Kentucky). There are 39 elibible states. No matching funds are required. An application can be submitted for either amount, but not both. We have received this grant in the past (one out of two applications). We wish to apply for $10,000 this year.
Motion Passed: Approval for Nelson County School District to apply for an America's Farmers Grow Rural Education (AFGRE) grant in the amount of $10,000. passed with a motion by Mr. Nicky Rapier and a second by Mr. Larry Pate.
