“Good News”
December 2013
Students at Bloomfield Middle were able to witness firsthand, “Retreat” at Brooks Field, Ft. Knox. They observed the playing of Retreat, the firing of the cannon, to sound the end of the day and speak to Major Eric Horton, a Training Supervisor at Ft. Knox. He talked to them about various duties he had while in Iraq and other assignments. Our young men were attentive, respectful and very much enjoyed themselves.
The STLP team will be heading to state competition after winner Regional Awards. Ms. Suzie Pozgay and her Bloomfield Middle School Technology team is working hard on their engineering and robotics entries to be competitive at the state level.
At Boston, 5th Grader, Zachary Martin, is the school winner of the AARP Grandparent of the Year competition.
5th Grader, Cora House, won an essay contest sponsored by Bardstown Mills on the importance of First Responders and won the honor of riding their float in the Bardstown Christmas Parade and read her winning essay for the judges.
At OKH Middle School, Madison Faulkner, Miles Newton and China Martin have been nominated for the KMEA All-State event.
The students at Old Kentucky Home are making a difference throughout Bardstown, Kentucky, and the World by participating in various community service projects:
- OKHMS Beta Club is currently collecting donations for the Home of the Innocents.
- OKHMS staff participated in a fundraiser for WHAS Crusade for Children Students at OKHMS has collected over 250 pairs of shoes for the Water Step organization.
K-4 students at New Haven performed their Christmas program on Tuesday December 10, 2013 in the gym. The students acted out and sang songs from Santa and the Three Scrooges in front of a large crowd of families and friends of the students. The students did an awesome job and special thanks to Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Newton for coordinating this event.
The New Haven PTO supported teachers and students with all sorts of goodies from their Teacher Classroom Wish lists, items included reward treats, headphones, classroom items and resource materials. Their efforts are very much appreciated by all. They also held reward parties for classes that made the Accelerated Reader goals.
Nelson County High School adopted out 27 NCHS Angels. Donors representing teachers, staff, students and clubs all came together to insure our neediest Cardinals have a Christmas!
The STLP Club will be competing at the state level in March. In addition, the group has given 10 refurbished computers to the Fusion Youth Services Center to give to NCHS students who indicated on their needs assessment survey that they have no computer at home.
At Thomas Nelson High School, students are discovering they can use Spanish to communicate with scholars from Spain thanks to an activity they have every other Wednesday. Generals CAN communicate with Spanish scholars talking about movies and music they like or dislike... Using a foreign language to do so increases their conception of world cultural exchange.
