It's almost time for KSBA's Summer Leadership Institute! Get ready to network with colleagues from across the state and participate in informative workshops and general sessions designed to enhance your school board service.

Whether you are looking to meet your yearly training requirements or for new knowledge to help improve your skills, we have something for you!

Registrants should pre-register for each workshop they plan to attend, as this helps ensure workshops are assigned to rooms of sufficient size to accommodate interest. Please note that conference workshops are available on a first come, first served basis and pre-registration is not a guarantee that a seat will be available.

All workshop sessions qualify for Academy of Studies (A/S) general elective credit unless otherwise noted.

Looking for a convenient way to earn credit in the mandated topics of ethics, finance and superintendent evaluation? Attend this session to learn important information while working toward meeting annual requirements. Special one-hour versions of these workshops are included:

1:00 – 2:00 Social Media, School Leaders and Ethics

(Counts toward mandated ethics training requirement)

School and district leaders have a greater ability to connect with students, parents, staff and other stakeholders, thanks to the growing use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. But social media outlets carry their own sets of challenges, especially on the ethical management of district and personal use. This course introduces participants to the basics of social media, ethical problems and opportunities for leaders and their districts.

2:00 – 3:00 The Board and the New Superintendent Evaluation Process

(Counts toward mandated superintendent evaluation training requirement)

During the 2014-15 school year, school board members were asked to become familiar with the state education department’s new superintendent evaluation system. This session explains the process for effective evaluation that uses a continuous improvement model, as well as the standards in the Superintendent Leadership Plan that is part of the new system. Discussions will focus on the evaluation instrument, performance levels and evidence of performance.

3:00 – 4:00 Overview of the Annual Finance Report and Tax Rates

(Counts toward mandated finance training requirement)

This session gives an overview of the components of the Annual Finance Report and how to read the numbers that tell the financial story for a year of activity. An overview of setting tax rates will also be covered, including the difference of rates and their impact on continuing cost.

Change causes fear, tension and miscommunication. Jan McInnis shows how to defuse tension instantly, kick off tough conversations and facilitate communications using humor. These practical tips, infused with plenty of Jan’s humor, will have attendees laughing and learning how to handle, and even embrace, change. She also explains what the latest research shows about the connection between humor and health.

8:30AM - 10:00AMLeading the Digital Transition of Kentucky's Schools (Salon A-D)
Walk into the average classroom in Kentucky and textbooks are generally still the norm, while laptops are rare. Walk into the average business office or college classroom in Kentucky and it is quite the opposite. Digitizing our schools requires leadership from all participants in the school organization, and school boards are vital to this transition. This session provides a background on the digital transition facing our schools and advises board members as they consider technology initiatives in their districts.

Participants will learn about the budgetary process and how to provide guidance and oversight of a fiscally responsible budget that supports the mission of the district. Learn about the different funding sources including restricted and discretionary funds, how to ask the right questions and identify budget “leaks”. (Includes budgetary decisions, requirements, reporting and timelines)
10:15AM - 11:30AMA2 Leadership and the Energy Management Process – A Board Member’s Role (Dixiana Lanes End)

School districts have been active with energy management since 2010. Boards should be asking questions about the district process being used to manage this function. Learn the questions to ask so a district can achieve the greatest benefit.
10:15AM - 11:30AMA3 Technology can be Tough: Let’s Talk About It (Salon D)
(A/S Level II Required Topic “Student Learning & Support Services”)

Building on the themes presented in the keynote presentation, this workshop dives deeper into several areas of digital impact on schools. The interactive session addresses questions and concerns of board members who are undertaking or considering technology initiatives. Topics may include digital courses and learning management, district-purchased and bring your own device initiatives, cell phone searching/seizure, social media use by students and staff, student digital privacy, and technology evaluation programs.

This interactive session showcases the Head Start Parent, Family and Community Engagement framework and the Strengthening Families framework. As understanding increases about the importance of children’s early years, so does attention to early childhood programs. Learn about their role in engaging parents as partners in supporting young children’s learning and development.
10:15AM - 11:30AMA6 So You Hired Your New Superintendent....Now What? (Salon AB)
(A/S Level II Required Topic “Board/Superintendent Relations”)
Learn the process for supporting new leaders as they build the Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) that is required for all new superintendents. This plan is closely aligned with the newly established evaluation process that is required for all superintendents in the state. The session covers the role of the board member in supporting the ILP.

When the snow came down last winter, students in districts across the state were able to continue learning through KDE’s nontraditional instruction program. In this session, state, district and school board personnel address implementation methods, successes, challenges, and how the program will evolve for year two.

Awareness about kindergarten readiness and its implications for long-term success is on the rise. One Kentucky program, the United Way Born Learning Academies, educates caregivers about ways to turn everyday moments into learning opportunities that help prepare their children for school. Find out more about the program’s components and how districts can apply for a grant to begin an Academy.

School boards are under increasing scrutiny by a public that demands board continuity and effectiveness. Thomas Alsbury, founder and president of Balanced Governance Solutions, explains how board members can apply the latest research to be more effective and avoid the typical political challenges faced by most board members. During this session, attendees discuss and apply tools to improve their effectiveness – and their board’s effectiveness – in improving student learning.

Whether a board is considering an additional 5-cent equivalent tax dedicated to facilities or should be considering such a move, this session provides a decision framework for use in contemplating such an action. Elements include the legal requirements involved, and considerations from both strategic and tactical viewpoints for such an action.

Participants in this session ask whether their board believes education in the future should look different than today and whether it has a clear agenda toward change. Reflecting on these and other questions is the first step to developing a truly innovative culture. Attendees assess their board’s current climate for change and examine sample board policies for content and language conducive to innovation.
2:30PM - 3:45PMC3 What Every Board Member Should Know about Facilities Design & Construction (Salon C)

From re-roofing projects to system upgrades to renovations and new facilities, chances are your school district will undertake a design and construction project at some point during your board term. How well do you understand your role? This session teaches key terms, how to avoid common project pitfalls and what board members can do to make sure a project is a success.

This session extends the budgeting and resource allocation down to the school level. Participants learn how policy and discretionary decisions impact funding for instructional resources at the school level, including classroom sizes and instructional material. Participants see how the budget extends to the procurement and payment process and get a short overview of restricted funds and the scope of the annual audit.
2:30PM - 3:45PMC5 How Kentucky’s New Juvenile Justice Reform Affects School Districts (Salon D)

Presenters from the Administrative Office of the Courts, Kentucky School Boards Association, Kentucky Department of Education and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services discuss the changes and requirements of SB 200 and how it impacts school systems and school personnel.
