It's almost time for KSBA's Summer Leadership Institute! Get ready to network with colleagues from across the state and participate in informative workshops and general sessions designed to enhance your school board service.

Whether you are looking to meet your yearly training requirements or for new knowledge to help improve your skills, we have something for you!

Registrants should pre-register for each workshop they plan to attend, as this helps ensure workshops are assigned to rooms of sufficient size to accommodate interest. Please note that conference workshops are available on a first come, first served basis and pre-registration is not a guarantee that a seat will be available.

All workshop sessions qualify for Academy of Studies (A/S) general elective credit unless otherwise noted.

To maintain the trust of its community and ensure high levels of student learning, the board’s decisions and behavior must be grounded in good ethics. Ethical behavior builds trust at all levels, sets the tone for what is right to do, promotes good decision making, helps build collaborative relations, and improves morale. This session gives board members a better understanding of why ethics matter in school board service.

This is the first of a two-part session that examines the “big picture” of school finance. Topics include the board’s basic responsibility in financial matters, a review of basic terminology, fund accounting, components of the general fund, an overview of the SEEK (Support Education Excellence in Kentucky) formula and an explanation of the budget process.

This session is designed for board members new to the Superintendent Professional Growth and Effectiveness System. It focuses on the importance of superintendent evaluation and provides an overview of the process and the instrument. Find out how the superintendent evaluation may be used as a model for growth, district improvement and as a way to build a positive board–superintendent relationship.

If ever a period could be described as “a time of change and transition,” for K-12 education in Kentucky, this is it. Charter schools, a new accountability system, and new English/language arts and math standards that will be vetted according to a new process – and that’s just at the state level! Like the state education agency Dr. Pruitt heads, school boards will not only have to sift through a raft of changes, but be able to lead their districts through them.

Dr. Eli Capilouto recently completed his sixth year as president of the University of Kentucky. During that time, the university has made gains on multiple fronts, from undergoing a significant physical transformation of its buildings to increasing institutional investments in student financial aid to putting UK in the Top 10 public institutions for enrolling National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic Scholars. But here’s a fun fact: Dr. Capilouto served eight years – 2002-2010 – on the Mountain Brook (Ala.) City Schools Board of Education, giving him something in common with Kentucky’s local board members.

Find out about the research work performed by the Office of Education Accountability. How are the agency’s research topics selected, and what is on the study agenda for 2017? Presenters explain research processes, presentations and reports, and review details of OEA research completed in 2016. Learn how OEA’s research may be helpful to policy makers at the local district level.

Working together as a governance team is a critical practice for school boards and superintendents. This partnership is paramount to every relationship in the district. Examine some of the reasons why partnerships fail or work perfectly, and how they can be improved. This session asks board team members to honestly evaluate their own actions in building an environment that encourages risk taking and collaboration.

Educators play an important role in preventing youth suicide, and being aware of any potential risk factors is vital to this responsibility. This session explores the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" that is making headlines and helps participants to be prepared for possible questions, along with a set of talking points to discuss the effects of this series in their school district.

Board members looking for ways to save money and staff time can attend this session to see and participate in a demonstration of eMeeting. Board meetings and minutes can be ready with just a few clicks and the information accessed wherever Internet is available. Join the 100-plus districts that subscribe to eMeeting and help the central office staff help you become a more informed and better-prepared board member.

How is the new state accountability system shaping up? Many Kentuckians have helped develop Kentucky’s new accountability system. Discuss details of the proposed system that captures Kentucky values as it meets federal and state law. Learn how a new accountability system can support a promising future for Our Children, Our Commonwealth.

This session gives an overview of the components of the Annual Financial Report and how to read the numbers that tell the financial story for a year of activity. An overview of setting tax rates will also be covered, including the difference in rates and their impact on continuing cost.

It seems like everyone has it out for public schools, complaining that our schools are “failing.” In this time, we must effectively tell the whole story of what our students are accomplishing and what our needs are. In 2018, public education will have to redouble its advocacy efforts. This workshop discusses specific tips to use and missteps to avoid.

Come prepared to explore current research into school board governance, and what it suggests for your district. Discuss how school boards can apply a balanced approach in their work and how it can improve school board and district effectiveness. Participants share their experiences and leave with practical ideas they can apply to strengthen the board’s role in student achievement and evaluate how their team’s actions relate to the success of the school district and student growth.

In this session, learn about cyber liability insurance, what it covers and how to buy it – including tips about buying as well as the process the presenter’s company uses when helping an organization to make this important purchase.

Board members attending this session get a better understanding of the Municipal Information System (MUNIS) for fund accounting used in school district budgets, with an emphasis on Fund 2. Fund 2 encompasses the restricted Special Revenue Funds earmarked for specific purposes, including state, federal or local grants such as Title I, IDEA-B (special education), professional development, safe schools, textbooks and preschool. Discussions will focus on how the major Fund 2 grants are calculated and awarded, as well as acceptable expenditures.

This session is designed to help boards refine the process and get the most out of the instrument by discussing real-life scenarios from Kentucky districts. Learn what the boards did in each case, what they would do differently and decide what you would have done.

This session offers a refresher of the Code of Ethical Conduct for Local School Board Members and further illuminates legal ethical issues such as conflicts of interest, nepotism and confidentiality.
